Another Boring Night (or not)

Summary:

Dean teaches Castiel how to cuddle

Notes:

Huge thanks to Dean (dmarie92) and my husband Gabriel for editing this fic.

Work Text:

Watching over the Winchesters and his son Jack while they sleep can be boring sometimes. Tonight though, Sam and Dean are more restless than usual. The brothers have been drinking for an hour now, still celebrating Jack’s birthday (without Jack). It’s past midnight and Castiel is missing his Saturday Evening Post.

Trying to get the boys to go to sleep, Sam finally gives in and goes to his room, Dean being stubborn, keeps drinking. Having enough, Castiel reaches for the whiskey bottle, “OK, Dean. Let’s get you to bed.”

“What? I’m not tired.”

“You need to rest, Dean. You both had a very long night. Plus, you guys have to get up to tackle that shape shifter tomorrow.”

“Oh, shit. That’s right,” Dean says as he stammers to his feet, “I’m goin’, I’m goin’.”

Hours after everybody is asleep and nothing is good enough to watch on TV, Cas does his routine bunker check. Dean’s bedroom door is wide open in invitation for Castiel to sit on his chair like every night to watch over the hunter he is madly in love with.

Having his back towards his angel, Cas notices that Dean’s breathing isn’t as soft and even like it usually is when he sleeps. Cas tilts his head and squints his eyes, as he gets up to walk around to face Dean. As he rounds the corner to the bed, Dean lifts his head to meet Cas’.

“Hey, Cas”

“Dean? Why aren’t you asleep?”

“Can’t”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Actually...yeah”

He uncovers himself, patting the empty space behind him.

“Dean, I don’t sleep.”

“Humor me.”

As Castiel rounds the bed again, he lays down motionless and feeling awkward on the bed next to Dean. Not knowing how to approach him, Dean has to be the first to make the move. He turns his entire body to face Cas. Seeing how nervous Castiel is being, eyes darting left to right, swallowing dryly, and breathing ragged, Dean leans in closer.

Whispering to him, he lays his hand on Castiel’s chest, “Cas.”

“Dean” Cas is speechless; he knew what he would do or say if he had the chance but now, his mind was drawing a blank.

“Wanna try something? It’s called spooning. You’re the big spoon, I’ll be the little spoon.”

“I don’t understand that reference.”

“Here. Let me show ya.”

He turns away to lay on his side, blindly reaching backwards for Cas’ hand until he finds it. He gently pulls him towards himself, draping Cas’ hand on his stomach.

“See? Like that. Comfortable?”

“Very much so, Dean.”

As he pushes closer, so his body is flushed against Dean’s, he breathes in the scent of leather and shampoo. He notices goosebump rise on Dean's neck as he exhales. Hearing that Dean is making a soft snore now, he presses his lips against the back of his head and whispers, “I love you, Dean.”

Stirring a bit, Dean responds in a rough, sleep-filled voice, “Love you too, angel.”

Turning around, he gently cards his hand through Castiel’s hair, pulling him towards his face and kisses him softly. Smiling at each other for a moment, Dean buries his head onto Cas’ chest followed by a deep sleep and for a moment, Cas closes his eyes too, wanting to follow his love into his dreams.

“We’ll do more once I wake up again, Cas,” Dean says as he turns to be the little spoon once again.

Chuckling, he presses himself up against Dean and pulls the covers over both of them and watches over Dean as he sleeps.

“So much for a boring night,”  he thinks as he stares at Dean sleeping, stroking his soft hair.
