    Summary

Phil Lester is nominated for an Oscar, for a film that feels a little too close to the bone. The night is overwhelming and surreal.

He only knows one thing for certain; Dan is always right next to him.

October, 2009: Dan is meeting Phil for the first time tomorrow. He just has to get through this night.

“The precious desire burning deep in Dan's gut is intoxicating and he should be so much more scared than he is. He’s still plenty terrified, but maybe just this once he can allow his heart to want this. He’ll pick up the shattered pieces later.”

    Summary

In online discussions surrounding fandom and fan engagement, different frameworks exist to delineate and differentiate between different types of fandom. These include transformative, affirmational, curatorial, and forensic fandoms- four categories which frequently overlap in different fannish activities and communities yet provide distinct frameworks for understanding how communities function. However, these categories do not fully account for a fifth framework through which to view fandom, the parasocial fandom. Parasocial fandom, defined as a fandom community that grows out of a shared parasocial relationship, has a rather paradoxical nature - as it can serve a detriment to the objects of the fandom while simultaneously working to protect these same individuals. Through the example of the Phandom, this paper explores how parasocial fandom’s apparent contradictions demonstrate a more complex narrative.
