After Alex and Kelly left for their honeymoon, Kara and Lena take care of Esme and Kara makes another choice to become the most authentic version of herself and that means telling Lena what she feels for her.

Notes:

Hello! I still find it hard to realize that the show is over. I love these characters so much and I'm gonna miss them a lot. That's why I'm gonna keep writing about them. So here's a fluffy story. :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kara took a step ahead as she was about to wave at Alex and Kelly before they left for their honeymoon.

Then, she took a step back as she brought her hand to let it hover close to her glasses until she slowly pulled them off and set them on the nearest surface within reach.

Kara felt as though a weight was suddenly removed from her shoulders, and she smiled as she walked closer to Alex and Kelly, who were happily settled in J’onn’s ship.

She looked at Lena, who was applauding them with a smile on her face that made Kara’s heart skip a beat.

A fluttering sensation ran through her as she felt her smile widen and turned to wave at her sister and her sister-in-law until she clapped her hands together as the newlyweds took off.

Kara looked back at Lena and felt her stomach swoop.

Slowly, she brought her hand closer to Lena’s and delicately tangled it with her own.

It was like something finally clicked in its right place when their fingers slotted together.

Kara looked down at their joined hands. Being close to Lena was the most natural thing in the world and she never wanted to let go of her hand.

“No more glasses?” Lena’s gentle voice withdrew Kara from her thoughts.

She looked up at Lena, who was smiling so softly at her that it made her heart squeeze and flutter at the same time as warmth flooded her chest and engulfed every fiber of her being.

A smile bloomed on Kara’s face. “I don’t think I’m gonna need them from now on.”

Lena didn’t say anything, but the smile lighting up her face and the sparkles in her eyes spoke for themselves. She couldn’t be happier for Kara.

“Thank you for helping me see everything more clearly.” Kara said, smiling.

“Always,” Lena beautifully flashed her dimples at Kara when she smiled as she gave Kara’s hand a gentle squeeze.

Kara looked down at Lena’s lips as she felt the need to lean forward and kiss her.

“Kara?” Lena’s gentle voice withdrew Kara from her thoughts again.

Shaking slightly her head, Kara looked up in Lena’s eyes. The most beautiful eyes that she had ever gazed into. “Yeah?”

“I’m watching over Esme while Alex and Kelly are on their honeymoon and I was wondering if you wanted to stay with us for all that time?” Lena asked.

A grin spread on Kara’s face. “I would like nothing more.”

“Let’s go get the little miss then.” Lena smiled, gently tugging on Kara’s hand.

Later in the day, Lena, Kara and Esme walked into Lena’s penthouse.

Esme yawned widely as she rubbed her eyes.

Kara smiled as she scooped the little girl up. “Okay, sweetie, it’s time to go to bed.”

“Bath time first. My moms always give me a bath before bed.” Esme let out another yawn as she finished speaking.

“I’m gonna fill the bathtub.” Lena said.

Kara nodded and smiled when she felt Esme rest her head on her shoulder.

A little while later, Kara was giving Esme a bath as Lena was changing the bedding in her spare room, trading the neutral sheets for cute ones with cartoon characters.

As she toweled Esme off, Kara smiled when she saw Lena walk in the bathroom with pajamas that she had picked for the little girl.

“Are those okay?” Lena crouched before Esme and showed her the pajamas.

“Yes,” Esme nodded, a toothy grin on her face as she took the pajamas that Lena handed her and put them on her own. Another yawn fell from her lips when she was done. “Can I have a story before bed too? My moms always read me one.”

“Of course, honey.” Lena scooped Esme up and smiled when the little girl wrapped her arms around her shoulders.

Kara stayed in the bathroom and cleaned everything up since some water had spilled over the edge of the bathtub during bath time. She didn’t use her super-speed and actually took her time as she thought about how much being with Lena felt right, authentic, but she also knew that she had something to do to truly make their relationship the most authentic possible.

She decided to reveal to the world that she was Supergirl, so surely telling her best friend that she was in love with her and had been for years should be easy-peasy next to that.

Except that it wasn’t. Even though loving Lena was the easiest thing that she ever did. She didn’t have to think about doing it, she just did.

But Kara was afraid of telling Lena what she felt because she didn’t want to risk ruining the rhythm that they had found together since they made up. She didn’t want to risk losing Lena if her feelings weren’t returned.

But then, what if her feelings were returned? It wasn’t an impossible possibility, and actually, the more the time passed, the more she felt that Lena shared her feelings, so now, one of them just had to dive.

She was tired to let her fears keep her from living the life she wanted and she silently promised herself that she would never do that again.

Kara knew that as long as she would keep her feelings for Lena locked inside of her, she could never truly be her authentic self.

She knew telling Lena that she was in love with her was the missing piece of her puzzle.

Lena was her missing piece, and there was nothing that Kara wanted more than to make them slide together.

Kara drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly as she made her way to the bathroom and headed to the spare room.

She stayed in the doorway and smiled as she looked at Esme and Lena who were snuggled together while Lena was reading a story and was doing different voices for all the characters.

It was a beautiful picture that filled her mind with dreams and made her heart swell with hope and love.

“That’s it, little miss.” Lena smiled, closing the book and threading softly her fingers through Esme’s hair.

“I didn’t know that book before but I liked it.” Esme grinned.

“I’m happy to hear that.” Lena smiled as she gently moved away from Esme and stood up to tuck the sheets around the little girl. “Now, it’s time for you to have a good night of sleep. You can come see me or Kara anytime though if you need us, okay?”

Esme nodded until she looked seriously at Lena. “Aunt Lena?”

“Yes, honey?” Lena smiled.

“Are you and Aunt Kara gonna get married too someday?”

Kara felt her eyes widen when she heard the question falling from Esme’s lips. Her heart quickened in her chest and started pounding in her ears. Without even trying to pick up the sound of Lena’s heartbeat, she heard it speed up as well and she held her breath as she waited for Lena to answer.

“Why are you asking me that, honey?” Lena asked softly.

“Because you are in love like my moms.” Esme answered.

Kara blinked stunned at the way Esme said it, as if that was just a fact that she stated, and maybe it was a fact, Kara thought as she felt hope rise within her and settle in her heart.

“So, are you gonna get married?” Esme asked again.

It was the moment Lena could either make Kara’s dreams come true or dash them completely in less than a second.

Lena stayed silent for a few seconds that felt excruciatingly slow to Kara but eventually Lena titled her head to the side ever so slightly and a soft smile bloomed on her face as she answered.

“I hope so.”

Kara felt herself release a breath of relief that was filled with hope as tears brimmed in her eyes and a lump came to her throat at the emotions surging through her.

“Could I be your flower girl?” Esme asked, grinning.

“We wouldn’t want anyone else for that.” Lena answered, smiling.

Kara swallowed thickly and wiped the moisture at the corners of her eyes even though she could feel herself smiling. She exhaled and stepped into the room.

“You ready for the night?” She smiled at Esme and wanted to thank her for asking the question that helped her feel braver, that helped her find the strength to live her most authentic life and she promised herself that once she would have told Lena how she felt about her, she would thank her niece.

Esme nodded, a smile on her face as she put her arms out to Kara.

Kara smiled as she bent down and hugged the little girl. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.” Esme said, pulling back and settling comfortably in bed.

Then, Kara and Lena let the door ajar as they made their way out of the room and walked to the living room.

“You’re amazing with Esme.” Kara said.

“She already meant a lot to me even before Alex and Kelly asked me to be her godmother, and I can’t even begin to express how much it means to me that they’re giving me this role in their daughter’s life. I’m taking it very seriously and I want to be the best godmother ever. Esme deserves the best all the time.” Lena answered.

“She does, and you already are the best godmother ever.” Kara smiled.

“Thanks,” Lena’s cheeks dimpled slightly when she smiled softly. “So, what do you want to do now? Do wanna watch a movie or do something else?”

Kara felt her brow crinkle slightly until she let out a breath and decided to be brave, and to dive. Lena pretty much said that she wanted to marry her, so surely that had to mean that she felt the same way too.

She gathered all the courage that she could muster as she sat down on the couch and gnawed slightly at her bottom lip. She didn’t feel afraid anymore that Lena might not feel the same, but she wanted this moment to be perfect. She wanted to find the right words, that ones that would make Lena feel how much she was important to her. She released her bottom lip and let out a breath before she began speaking.

“Actually, Lena, there’s something that I need to tell you.”

Lena sat down beside Kara, a worried frown on her brow. “Is everything all right?”

Kara smiled as she took Lena’s hand in her own and squeezed it softly. “Yeah, everything’s okay, don’t worry. It’s nothing bad. Actually, I think that’s something very good and something that I don’t want to hide anymore.” She paused and let out another breath. “I spent years hiding behind my glasses, I hid myself for so long that it became a second nature and this habit made me hide my feelings for so long too. I don’t think I fully realized how much I was burdened by my secret identity until I decided to be just Kara. But the thing is… I can’t be just Kara if I’m not honest about what I feel for the person I love the most. You mean the world to me, Lena, and I feel that I could never find words strong enough to tell you how much you mean to me, but I want to try. I told you that no one ever pushed me as much as you do, that no one ever challenged me how much as you do and that’s true. But I also want you to know that no one ever inspired me as much as you and that I never loved someone like I love you either.”

“Kara,” Lena breathed out, tears welling in her eyes as she smiled.

“I heard Esme ask you if we were gonna get married someday and I heard what you answered her too. I didn’t mean to overhear but I did, and I want you to know that I hope that for us too, and that I definitely want Esme to be our flower girl when that happens.” Kara let out a soft laugh as she beamed brightly.

“Gosh,” Lena exhaled, sniffling slightly as a few tears glided down her cheeks. “I never cried happy tears as much as I did today.”

“You okay?” Kara asked, caressing softly Lena’s cheeks and wiping her tears away.

Lena breathed out a chuckle as she nodded slightly. “Never been better. I would be better if we finally got to kiss though.”

Kara beamed as she caressed Lena’s cheek with her thumb as she slowly began to lean in. Lena met her halfway and their noses delicately brushed together.

Kara felt her insides thrum with happiness and fill with warmth as her heart grew several sizes in her chest with all the feelings that it held when they tilted their heads at the most perfect angle to make their lips connect in a perfect kiss.

It was a quiet and unrushed kiss.

They discovered this new closeness and savored the taste and the feel of each other’s lips, and Kara felt that the last puzzle piece seamlessly slid in its rightful place within her as her lips moved with Lena’s.

It made her feel whole and made her feel that she was finally home.

Lena exhaled when she withdrew slightly until she pressed softly her forehead with Kara’s and brought her hands to Kara’s cheeks. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” Kara beamed brightly.

Lena slightly pulled back and flashed her dimples at Kara in a beautiful smile until she dived back and joined their lips together.

This kiss got more heated when their tongues mingled together for the first time and they both let out moans into the kiss.

Kara gently pulled Lena closer to her and felt Lena’s legs wrap around her waist as they shifted their position.

Not quite sure how it had escalated so quickly, Lena found herself lying on the couch while Kara was gently settled atop her.

Breathless, Lena withdrew from the kiss, a gasp falling from her lips.

Kara leaned in as she scattered soft kisses on Lena’s cheeks until she moved down and sprinkled her neck with loving kisses until she sucked gently at the freckle at the front of her throat that she had been longing to kiss for years.

Lena moaned quietly until she gasped. “Kara.”

Kara stopped what she was doing and kissed Lena’s most prominent freckle before she slid up to face her. “You okay?”

“Yeah. I’m very much okay.” Lena breathed out a chuckle as she took Kara’s hands in her own and squeezed them softly. “And I really love where this is going and I really wish to do more, but I don’t think I want our first time to happen with Esme a few feet away from us.”

“You’re right.” Kara nodded, a chuckle spilling out of her as she sat up. “Let’s slow down.”

“What are we now though?” Lena asked, sitting up as well and shifting even closer to Kara than she was already was.

“You’re still my best friend, but you’re also something more.” Kara beamed, her hand sliding into Lena’s like a magnet drawn to it. “And I want you to be my wife someday, so I think that’s pretty clear how I feel about us. But for now, would you like to be my girlfriend?”

“I’d love nothing more.” Lena smiled, dimples fully blooming on her cheeks.

Kara was about to lean for a kiss until she pulled back when a yawn made its way out of her.

Lena laughed as she brought their joined hands to her lips and kissed the back of Kara’s hand. “How about we get some sleep?”

“Perfect plans,” Kara stifled another yawn with her hand as Lena pulled them to their feet and led them to the bedroom where they fell asleep tangled into each other’s arms for the first time, not without exchanging a goodnight kiss beforehand and marveling at how perfect their lips fitted together and how wonderful it felt to have their bodies pressed up together while they sought as much closeness as possible in the way they held each other.

The next day, Kara read a bedtime story to Esme and once she was done, she closed the book and pressed a soft kiss atop the little girl’s head.

“I want to thank you, sweetie.” Kara smiled.

Esme looked up, a grin on her face. “For what?”

“I heard what you asked Aunt Lena last night, about us getting married someday and that helped me feel brave to tell her that I was in love with her and now I can tell you that we’re definitely going to get married someday. So, thank you so, so much.” Kara beamed.

Esme grinned widely. “You’re welcome.”

Kara smiled softly at the little girl.

“Are you gonna have kids someday?” Esme asked.

Kara was a tad startled by the sudden question, but she quickly recovered and smiled as she answered, “If Aunt Lena wants that too, yeah. We’re definitely gonna have a dog though.”

Esme grinned. “My moms told me we’re gonna have a dog when they’re back.”

“They told me about that too.” Kara smiled, she kissed softly Esme’s forehead and then she got up. “Get some sleep now.”

Esme put her arms out for a hug and Kara smiled as she leaned down and embraced the little girl until Esme pulled back and put her arms out to the doorway.

Kara’s gaze followed Esme’s and that’s when she realized that Lena was standing there.

They shared a soft smile as Lena stepped into the room and bent down to hug Esme until the little girl was ready to settle for the night and was already dozing off before they even left the room.

Kara and Lena went to the living room and snuggled on the couch as they watched a movie.

“I want to have kids with you by the way.” Lena said, pressing herself closer to Kara. “Not before a while. I want us to focus on us for now, but someday.”

Kara smiled and kissed softly Lena’s temple.

Lena looked up and they shared a smile as their lips connected in a loving kiss until they resumed their position but they snuggled even closer than before as they kept watching the movie.

Four days later, Alex and Kelly were back from their honeymoon.

Esme giggled as she rushed to her mothers and collided into their legs.

“I missed you, my baby bird.” Kelly smiled, kissing Esme’s cheek.

Esme grinned as she nestled deeper against Kelly until she pulled back and put her arms out to Alex.

“Did Aunt Kara and Aunt Lena behave well?” Alex asked her daughter as she settled her on her hip.

“They’re gonna get married and they told me I could be the flower girl again.” Esme answered, grinning.

Alex’s eyes widened as she stared confused at her sister and at Lena.

Kara felt a blush warm her skin from head to toe. She looked at Lena and noticed a rosy tint to her cheeks as well that wasn’t there before.

Lena cleared her throat. “What Esme is saying is that…” She smiled. “Kara and I are now dating and we may have talked about our future together and well…” She shrugged.

“It was about time.” Alex chuckled.

“We’re very happy for you,” Kelly smiled.

Alex lowered her daughter to the floor and then she looked amused at Kara and Lena. “Anything else I should know about?”

Kara smiled. “I decided to stop hiding who I really am. I accepted Cat’s offer. I’m gonna be CatCo Editor-in-Chief and I’m gonna tell the world that I’m Supergirl. Cat already knew by the way, so yeah. I figured out the most important parts of my life and I’m ready to move forward.”

Alex smiled and leaned in as she pulled her sister into her arms and embraced her tightly.

Kara exhaled as she smiled. She didn’t have any doubt that she would have her sister’s support, but that was so good to feel it that she felt even more that everything was falling into place.

A week later, Kara and Lena were lying in bed together just right after the world finally not only knew that Kara Danvers was Supergirl, but that Kara Zor-El Danvers existed, and that Kara Zor-El Danvers would contribute to make the world better, without having to split herself into two different versions of herself.

After years of struggle, Kara felt more relieved, and happier than ever for finally managing to reconcile the different parts of herself, to make them merge together and form the most authentic version of herself.

“You all right?” Lena asked as she threaded softly her fingers through Kara’s hair.

Kara snuggled close to Lena and breathed her in. “I didn’t know I could feel as good as I do right now. And I’ve gotta thank you for inspiring me to take that step. I needed it so much.”

“That’s what we do for the people we love. We inspire each other to be the best version of ourselves. That’s what true love does. It makes us better. That’s why I told you that you made me a better person. Loving you helped me become the person I am today.” Lena smiled. “You will always be my hero, Kara Zor-El Danvers. And I love you.”

Kara swallowed thickly and smiled through eyes that glistened with happy tears as she fused their lips in a kiss in which she poured all of her love. As she held Lena close to her, she softly laid their foreheads together. “I love you so much.”

Maybe life wouldn’t always be easy from now on, because it never was, but right now at this very second, Kara was more hopeful than she had ever been. She finally felt fully authentic and she was happy in a way that she hadn’t thought possible for a long time.

Most importantly, Kara felt so much love within her and around her that she felt that she and her loved ones could face anything that would come their way together, united like they had always been.
