Two of Pentacles

Summary:

Two of Pentacles - Finding balance, multi-tasking, perseverance

Their most recent unsub is in custody and is demanding to speak only to Emily. Which is nothing unusual, it happens to all of them sometimes. This time however, Emily has more than just the interrogation to think about. Because her water has just broken.

Work Text:

“Absolutely not,” Aaron said as he, Emily and Morgan looked at their unsub through the one-way mirror. Their unsub, Richard Abbott, had kidnapped, assaulted and executed two pregnant women in the space of a week. Although it had been relatively easy to find him and everything from the profile to the evidence to the ropes and gun they had found in the trunk of his car, pointed to him; they still needed a confession. However Abbott, a lawyer who chose to represent himself, refused to speak to any of them.

Except Emily.

“We’ll be fine,” Emily reassured as she rested Aaron’s hand on her swollen stomach. At thirty nine and a half weeks pregnant, it was more out of her own stubbornness than anything else that had prevented her from going on maternity leave. Even if she had been grounded to the precincts and the bullpen ever since she and Aaron found out she was pregnant.

“I’m going in with you.” Aaron insisted as Emily shook her head. Abbott would only speak to her. Alone.

“It’ll be OK. You and Morgan will be right here. Plus he’s handcuffed to the table.” Emily reminded as she tilted Aaron’s chin up so he could look into her eyes, not at her stomach. “We’ll be fine. I promise.”

With that, Emily stepped out of the side room and leant against the wall. She stuffed a fist to her mouth to hold back her cry of pain as her entire body trembled with the effort to handle the wave of pain that crashed over her. It had been the third time she had felt such a wave in the past hour since she had last used the bathroom. She knew what it meant but it would have to wait. She had to get in, get the confession and get out.

Then she could go to the hospital.

“Richard Abbott,” Emily said as she walked into the interrogation room and ensured the camera was on to ensure the confession was documented. Abbott looked her up and down, leering at her swollen stomach.

“Agent,” Abbott replied. “What can I do for you?”

“Let’s start with the first victim, Jayme Patton.” Emily replied as she glared at Abbott and felt a sharp kick against her stomach. “Why her?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Abbott replied. “I invoke my fifth amendment right to remain silent.”

“That’s fine, I have enough to say.” Emily replied as she opened the file and slid the two photos of the deceased women lying on the autopsy tables. Abbott glanced at them and glanced away again. “We found your DNA on Jayme’s body. We also have CCTV footage of you pushing her into your car on the day she disappeared.”

Abbott glared at her and sucked on his teeth for a moment but he didn’t answer. Ignoring the building pain in her stomach, Emily pressed on. “Then there is Michelle. Your fiancée. Not only did we find your DNA, tyre marks matching your car were found in the dirt close to her body. All the evidence points to you.”

“Jayme was incidental.” Abbott said finally.  “I saw her, saw that she was alone. She was a single parent. Had no family. No one would notice she was gone. Figured it would be practise.”

“Practise for your real target. The second victim, your fiancée, Michelle Marsh.” Emily stated and as expected, Abbott’s expression darkened. The overkill on Michelle’s body had been especially excruciating to witness and it was obvious that she was the true target of his rage. “Michelle was seven months pregnant with your child. Your son.”

“He wasn’t my son!” Abbott exploded. “That bitch cheated on me, got knocked up and expected me to take that little bastard in! Like he was mine!”

“So instead of ending the relationship, you murdered her?” Emily challenged as Abbott slammed a fist onto the table.

“She deserved it!” Abbott insisted. “The first one deserved it too! No one would miss her! And if I could have gotten you, I would have too!”

“Neither of them deserved it.” Emily replied as she stood up. “We’re done here.”

Just the door closed behind her, Emily felt another wave of pain crash over her. This time, she couldn’t stifle the cry of pain and as the pain faded, she wasn’t surprised to see Morgan and Aaron looking at her. Morgan looked concerned, Aaron looked both exasperated and excited. He had suspected it since she returned from the bathroom looking worried but they had had Abbott in custody and she wanted to witness the interrogation before Abbott demanded to speak to her.

“Are you alright?” Morgan asked as Aaron put an arm around her. He had been through this before and knew that it might be time to go.

“How long and how many?” Aaron asked as he kissed her temple.

“That was the fourth one and every fifteen to twenty minutes. We have time.” Emily reassured Aaron as she rested her head on his shoulder. “Besides, we have the confession so we can press the charges.”

“I can do that, you need to go to the hospital!” Morgan insisted. He had no idea what happened when a woman went into labour. His only experience being seeing it on TV or in movies and he had absolutely no plans on being around to see Emily give birth.

“It’ll be fine for now.” Emily replied as she gripped Aaron’s hand tightly. “Besides we need to go home, get the hospital bag and make sure Jess can look after Jack.”

“Let’s do that then,” Aaron said as he put his arm around her waist and guided her back towards the bullpen. Emily felt her hands tremble slightly at the thought of the impending labour. After nine and a half months, it was finally time. They were going to have a baby. Emily leaned against her desk as she waited for Aaron to fetch his briefcase and rested her hands on her stomach.

“Stay in there until we get to the hospital. Otherwise, you are in big trouble.” Emily joked wryly as Aaron hurried back down from his office. She could sense his barely controlled excitement as he joined her and grinned as he took her hand. Of course he would be excited, he wasn’t going to spend the next however-many-hours in absolute agony.

“Come on Sweetheart,” Aaron beamed as he grabbed her hand tightly. “Let’s go have a baby.”
