I Believe What You Said

Summary:

Akaashi and Bokuto had been together throughout high school, and have been best friends ever since Akaashi attended and joined Fukuroudani's Volleyball Team. Not everything stays the same however, as even though Bokuto stays close to him as much as possible after he graduates, Akaashi has a dream of going to a special, yet prestigious university after he graduates, which only allows the best of the best.

Bokuto wants to persuade his dream of becoming a professional volleyball player, but with Akaashi on his side of course. Akaashi however, does not want to continue in his volleyball career and wants to become an editor. His dream is to attend this university. He wants Bokuto to attend with him, but he would respect his decision to persuade into his Volleyball career instead.

Bokuto chose to follow Akaashi's dream and attend the university with him, despite hating to study.

Akaashi promises that nothing would pull them apart and they'll always remain as best friends.

Bokuto believed him.

Notes:

Hiya, author here! This is my very first Haikyuu fanfiction ever! As I've just recently got into the fandom, Bokuaka became a comfort ship for me. I've read and seen a lot of wholesome Bokuaka fanfictions and I fell in love with the ship. I wanted to write something different surrounding their friendship/relationship. This story will get dark, so I'll be adding trigger warnings to certain chapters that do contain dark elements. Other than that, there is going to be wholesome and bittersweet moments, and Akaashi and Bokuto still love each other dearly in this story.

I apologize if the characters in this story are a bit ooc, as I have not completed the entire series yet. (I'm in the middle of season 4 and I've also haven't read the manga but I've seen a bit of spoilers for the time skip part.) Also as a reminder, time looping will be a major plot device in this story and POV's will change frequently. I'm open for any criticism to improve my writing. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Akaashi Keiji had expected to wake up to his alarm, which would've alerted him that his university classes will be commencing soon. Instead, not a single sound radiated from his cellphone.

Sensing that something was terribly wrong, his eyes immediately fluttered open. He wasn't inside of his dorm. Instead, he was in his own bedroom from where he lived before moving away to persuade to his dream university. He glanced at his phone, which was laying idly on the desk next to a lamp. He instantly grabs it and taps the screen to reveal the date. His eyes widen in horror. He nearly dropped the cellular device to the floor.

August 3rd, 2012, 7:00 AM.

He didn't know if this was some sort of sick prank, or a really realistic dream. Surely, the date had to be wrong. There was no way he had gone back to his second year in High School. Perhaps he had accidentally altered the date on his phone. Something still didn't make sense though. Why was he at his old house? Before he could continue his thoughts, he heard a slight knock at his door. The poor male nearly jumped out of his bed as he heard the door to his room creak open.

"Keiji? Are you alright? It's almost time for school and you haven't even got changed yet." It was his mother. Akaashi looked up from his phone and into his mother's worried glare. Trying to control his composure, he gives her a fake smile.

"I'm fine, don't worry about it. I'll be out in a moment."

This seemed to have reassured his mother as she nodded and closed the door behind her. Akaashi let out a few deep breaths before glancing around the room. It didn't look the same the last time he left it. Before moving into his dorm, he had emptied the room out and threw away some of his posters and old clothes he no longer needed. This wasn't the case here. The room was littered with his old things, and even his bookbag and a stack of homework laid on his desk. His eyes spotted his old uniform from when he went to Fukurōdani Academy, which was hanging on his closet door.

He hesitantly got out of his bed and walked towards the closet door to where his uniform remained. He quickly got dressed before standing in front of his bedroom mirror. He looked at himself through the glass mirror. He looked younger than he did. It was like he was back to his seventeen year old self, except that was a fact. He was no longer an adult, nor a university student. He was back as a second year in high school.

How the hell did this happen? There is no way any of this could be real nor explained. Akaashi silently thought this to himself.

Did he really somehow traveled back in time? But that sort of thing only happens in fiction or movies. If this is real, then why would this happen to him? Clearly, something had to have happen to suck him back into the past. He tried to think of any sort of theory or ideas on why he could've been brought back to his second year, but he ended up empty handed.

Just yesterday he was at his dream university, having the time of his life with some new friends that he have made. He had also recently started dating a girl named Yumi. He met her in the library during lunchbreak. The two had a lot of things in common, including the passion to read and write. The two instantly clicked and they've started dating after having a pleasant coffee date. After that, he returned to his dorm to get some rest. Now, he had woken back up as his seventeen year old self. It was no longer May of 2015.

Akaashi spotted his sports bag which carried his volleyball shoes and uniform. He went to grab it and slowly opened it. He took out a familiar jersey that he had worn previously during his second year. Written in a bold dark font was the number five. He could feel his hands shaking as he held on tightly to the fabric of his former volleyball uniform. He felt tears threatening to spill from his navy blue orbs.

Why did this have to happen to him? What did he do wrong? Why was he sent back to his second year of high school? Did he have to relive his high school days again? Did he have to go though all of that hard work he put in to get into that university again? He tried to pinch himself to see if he was actually dreaming, but by the looks of it, he wasn't. This wasn't a dream. This was real.

He took a few deep breaths to try to calm himself down. He didn't know why or how this happened, but he wanted to try and fix it. He needed to look for answers. He placed his volleyball jersey back into his sports bag and zipped it closed, placing it in his bookbag. He equipped his bookbag and sprinted out of his room. He immediately headed straight out the front door. As he sprinted by his living room, he could hear his mother call out to him.

"Keiji, you're leaving now? You haven't ate breakfast yet!"

Akaashi ignored his mother's comments and shuts the front door behind him. Luckily, he was able to remember the route to school. Perhaps once he gets through the day, maybe things will go back to normal. He hoped that by tomorrow he'll be back into his university dorm. Akaashi wasn't educated that well on time travel or any sort of thing like that, but he had to believe that things will be fixed eventually. Right now he should focus on getting through the day. Even if he had to repeat past events over again.

He eventually makes it to school, a bit out of breath from sprinting. He stopped by the gates of the academy to collect himself. Ignoring the stares of students walking passed him, he stood up and slowly made his way to the academy's entrance. As Akaashi makes his way up to the school's entrance, he spotted a familiar figure waiting for him besides the doors. The figure had their arms crossed, noticeably scanning the crowd for somebody. Soon as Akaashi was in view, their intimidating posture vanished.

"AKAAAASHII! HEY HEY HEY!"

That familiar loud and boisterous voice of his best friend rang through Akaashi's ears.

"Bokuto-san." He walked up to his friend, who excitably grinned upon his friend's arrival.

It's been a while since he had seen his friend. He hadn't seen Bokuto in almost a week. He recently found out that his friend got kicked out of the class they had together due to failing grades and that he had somehow gotten into trouble. Akaashi wanted to reach out to him and help, but he couldn't find his friend anywhere. He even tried calling him, but he wouldn't answer his phone. Thinking back at it now, Akaashi felt guilty that he didn't attempt to help his friend with his grades. Bokuto absolutely hated studying, but he would do it for Akaashi's sake or with his help. He wanted to properly apologize to his friend.

Akaashi must've been deep in thought as he felt a firm grasp of a hand on one of his shoulders.

"Akaashi?" He looked up and saw a glimpse of worry in his friend's expression. "Hey, are you okay? It looked like you were spacing out there for a second."

Not wanting to worry his friend, he shook his head and gave his friend a small smile.

"I'm fine, Bokuto-san. I was just thinking about something. Don't worry about it." Thankfully, Bokuto didn't seem to question it as a smile grew back onto his face.

The two began to walk into the academy like they always had during Akaashi's second year of High School. Almost everyday, Bokuto would walk Akaashi to class despite being a third year. To be honest, Akaashi sort of missed it a bit. He grew a wave of nostalgia of being back in High School with his best friend. This is where their friendship had blossomed and the two got even closer. Most of all, he missed hanging out with Bokuto.

Bokuto was surprisingly quiet on the way to Akaashi's classroom. Usually he wouldn't shut up about anything as he had always had something to talk about with Akaashi. This day however was odd. He hadn't spoken once since they have met outside of the school. Bokuto did give his friend short glances, looking at him now and then. This was sort of out of character for his friend and normally he wouldn't be so quiet unless something was wrong.

The two both made it to Akaashi's classroom and once Akaashi walked inside, he noticed that Bokuto was staring at him, not saying a single word. He turned back to his friend and gave him a worried glance.

"Bokuto-san? Is something wrong? You've been acting odd and you haven't said anything since we've walked in." He asked. Akaashi no longer felt his friend's eyes burning onto him. Instead, Bokuto's expression went back to normal as a smile replaced his frown.

"Oh! I'm sorry Akaashi. I didn't mean to worry you! It's nothing, I promise! I was just a little worried about you since you were spacing out this morning."

"Bokuto-san, I've told you I'm fine. Don't worry about it, alright? Please don't let it bother you." He reassured. This seemed to have worked as a large grin spawned across his features.

"Alright! You know you can always tell me if something is bothering you, okay? See you at lunch Kashi!" And with that, Bokuto disappeared, assumingly off to his own class.

Once Bokuto left, Akaashi heavily sighed to himself. He hated lying to Bokuto, but this time it was necessary. He couldn't just tell Bokuto that he somehow traveled back in time to his second year and that he was actually a first year at university working to become an editor. He wouldn't believe him. Nobody would anyways. People would just assume that he was either dreaming or delusional.

The younger male laid his head down against his own desk. He just had to endure this a little longer until things were back to normal. Until he was back to his normal life. The life he worked so hard for and dreamed of having since he was a third year.

Everything would be fine. He'll find a way out of here in no time. At least, that was what Akaashi thought.

He would not expect what events had in store for him soon.
