Unpacking should have been a more pleasant activity. They finally had their own place. Marinette had decorated it the way she wanted to. Together with Adrien they had chosen the furniture.
Now they could fill it with things they loved that would make it feel like a home. Their home.
Unfortunately this meant handling a lot of fragile things, which Marinette was not happy with. She knew she should have waited for Adrien but he was unpacking clothes in the bedroom and she wanted to help, so she’d started in the kitchen. Arranging the mugs and plates and glasses.
It was going well, with her trying to be extra careful, but then the inevitable happened. A moment of lost concentration and a glass slipped from Marinette’s grasp and shattered on the floor.
The sound made her jump back and she was certain that it had echoed throughout the apartment. Seconds later, Adrien appeared at the door, looking concerned.
“I’m so clumsy,” she groaned, looking at the glass shards on the ground.
“Are you hurt?” Adrien said, his voice suddenly in her ear as his arms closed around her and he pulled her away from the sharp pieces.
“No, it broke on the ground, I didn’t touch it,” she sighed. Her heart had calmed down, the initial shock subsiding. But she still felt bad. She couldn’t get even one thing done right.
“It’s just one glass, m’lady. Besides, It brings good luck, don’t worry!” He reassured her.
“It does?”
“Yes! And what better way to start our life together in our new home than with a positive omen?” He smiled warmly when she turned around in his arms.
“I’m just… hopeless sometimes,” she pouted, burying her face against his shirt. They had been together for so long and yet she still felt the crippling fear that she was going to disappoint him with something and he’d just leave.
She should have more faith in herself, in him, in their relationship, in their love. They had been through so much together, it was ludicrous to think that Adrien would think any less of her because of one broken glass. And yet there she was.
Maybe it was the newness of everything. It was overwhelming to embark on this new journey with him. It was natural to feel a little scared. She wanted everything to be perfect and it wasn’t so she was panicking.
“Marinette, look at me.” Adrien’s soft but firm voice managed to break through her troubled thoughts. She looked up and felt the love in his eyes embrace her like a warm blanket. Which was something considering the fact that she was already in his arms. But the way he looked at her always made her weak. “I love you,” he continued.” I don’t care about a broken glass, a plate, a washing machine, or a cabinet. Whatever. You can break everything and I’ll still love you!”
She giggled through sudden tears in her eyes. How he knew the right thing to say never failed to amaze her. Then again, they knew each other. He knew that she was likely to freak out and she knew that he was there to calm her down. Sometimes it was the other way around. Together, they worked through everything.
She couldn’t think of a way to say it better than him, so she chose the usual route - showing him. She kissed him, right there in the middle of their new kitchen, the broken glass still next to their feet. And this kiss, reassuring and loving, was all they both needed. No better way to start the next phase in their lives, definitely.
