Chapter Text
We did it.
Project Osiris was gone with the wind, as easy as that.
I was ecstatic, no longer would I have to live in fear of being ‘weeded’.
It was the happiest I’d felt in a while.
For the first hour, after we got into the plane, I must have been smiling like an idiot.
WHO CARES?
I was finally free.
Everyone else was buzzing too.
Mrs Dunleavy had her own compartment in the front of the plane, closed off from the rest of us.
She had came to scold us, then congratulate us, then scold us again, and after that she must have been done with emotions cause she went into her compartment and I hadn’t seen her since.
Tori was going to everyone and saying hi, hugging, being Tori.
Amber and Eli were retelling the whole story to them all.
I butted in sometimes to add a few details, or say how Amber was being dramatic and I was not that scared (like seriously, I wasn’t).
After Eli was talking about the prison break Ben had interrupted.
“Wait, so hector really did betray you guys?”
Me, Tori, Amber and Eli went quiet for a few seconds.
In truth, hector had totally ratted us out.
Was I upset about that?
I use to be.
I use to get upset about a lot of things.
Then my friend got held at gun point. I guess that kinda changed my view on some things.
Plus the shrimp had just saved our lives, so it’d be pretty stupid to be upset with him.
Right now hector was in the back of the plane with the medic, probably asleep so the medic could fix him up.
“Yes, he did” I said finally, but I didn’t add on.
I guess Ben got the message because he didn’t ask further.
“Yeah, anyway” Eli said continuing on with the story.
I raised my eyebrows at Laska when Eli said that he and Tori shared a warehouse for a week.
She looked away, as if I was annoying her.
Man, I could never figure Laska out.
One minute she was laughing with me, next minute she’s acting as if I am the bane of all her problems.
“And now we are here” finished Eli at last.
“Home free, baby” I smiled, leaning back.
“Home free to where?” Asked Robbie.
Everyone turned to look at him.
He looked back at his hands, clearly nervous. (About what I wasn’t sure, but he was always kinda like that, even back in serenity.)
“As in where are we going now? If you mean home free, then we have no home anymore” Margaret finished for him.
“We haven’t ever had a home” Laska said darkly.
“At least we had addresses, and beds” Freddie spoke up, “we don’t even have that now.”
“Tamara will give us a new home” Eli comforted them.
“Didn’t you say that Tamara was going to try and reason with Felix though, that was obviously going to back fire, can we even trust Tamara?” Asked Ben.
Freddie nodded and so did Margaret.
“Look you guys, I didn’t really trust the lady either, but she’s giving us what she can” I said
“She’s trying” Tori agreed.
“Maybe trying isn’t going to cut it” muttered Laska.
Eli turned to her in some kind of mixed look of amazement and disbelief.
“Amber you can’t be serious” he said.
“I’m just saying Ben had a point” Laska confessed, “what’s it to say she’ll even keep us around? Maybe she’ll put us up for foster homes, or even worse, she’ll give us money and let us live rich but never take time to get to know us.”
“She wouldn’t do that” Eli said firmly.
“How do you know that?” She asked instantly, doubt filling her words.
“I just do, okay? She won’t give us away or treat us like that.” Eli said surely.
“Well maybe not you” I said without thinking.
Eli turned and glared at me, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
I shrugged, “Think about it Eli, your like, the next her, of course she wouldn’t get rid of you, she knows the potential you hold, the rest of us became criminals but you became a billionaire.”
“Are you saying she only wants us for the money? Like you just said, she’s a billionaire, she doesn’t need more money” Eli accused.
“That’s not what I meant-“ I started but tori interrupted me.
“Guys quit fighting!”
We all promptly shut up.
“Look, I know this is hard on everyone, but we’re going to have to trust Tamara for now. We don’t have any other choices and if we end up hating her, which I doubt we will, we can cross that bridge when we get to it” Tori said with finality, the same look in her eye that she use to have when deciding on a plan.
We all agreed quietly. And the buzz of Osiris slowly faded away.
