Work Text:
“I’m telling you, we just don’t have a song. It’s not the end of the world!” Anna said as she put her purse on the table. She heard Etienne shut the door and his footsteps approached her.
“How can we not have a song? I refuse to believe it.” Etienne insisted.
“Well, we were in France when we met, I couldn’t understand most of the songs,” Anna said as Etienne passed her, headed towards the main room. “ Not to mention that we danced around each other for so long that we didn’t need a romantic song to get us together.”
“That may be so, however, what about a song that fits our relationship? One that we could sing together?”
“I don’t know.” Anna sighed, “And frankly I don’t care. I love you and I don’t think we need a song.”

“Anna. Anna! ANNA!” Etienne shook Anna awake.
“What?” She looked around, unhappy from being disrupted from her nap on the couch.
“I found a song that fits us.” Etienne smiled. Anna, however, groaned and put a pillow over her face.
“I was sleeping, Etienne!” She groaned through the pillow.
“I know, I know. But think about it, what are we going to say when people ask what our song is?
“That we don’t have one. Not everyone has a song.”
“What about our first dance as a married couple? Are we going to do the chicken dance?” Etienne said, not missing a beat.
“Getting a little ahead of ourselves there, aren’t we?” Anna said. She finally flipped the pillow off her face and smiled at Etienne, “Fine. What is our song then?”

We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts"
---Anna complies with Etienne’s motion to close her eyes. And is quickly swept up in the memories of their love story.
I’m standin’ there
On a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd and say ‘Hello’
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwin’ pebbles"
---How long had it taken for her to figure out he was flirting with her?
And my daddy said, ‘Stay away from Juliet’
And I was crying; on the staircase"
---The number of times Etienne had been for her.
Beggin; you, ‘Please don’t go,’ and I said
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run"
---How long they had been friends, waiting for the other to make a move.
You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess
It’s a love story
Baby just say yes
So I sneak out to the garden to see you"
---Their first kiss. In the park, on the grass, no one was supposed to touch.
We keep quiet, ‘cause we’re dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while
‘Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter"
---How that kiss was forbidden because of Etienne and Ellie.
And my daddy said, ‘Stay away from Juliet’
But you were everything to me
I was beggin’ you ‘Please don’t go,’ and I said"
---How she asked him not to leave after their kiss.
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run
You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess
It’s a love story, baby, just say ‘Yes’"
---When he asked her to tell him that she loved him on the tower.
Romeo, save me, they’re tryna tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it’s real
Don’t be afraid, we’ll make it out of this mess"
---Etienne facing his fear of heights to tell her how he felt.
It’s a love story, baby, just say ‘Yes
I got tired of waiting
Wonderin’ if you were ever comin’ around"
---Her days alone after the kiss, wishing Etienne hadn’t run away.
My faith in you was fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said
Romeo, save me, I’ve been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you, but you never come
Is this in my head? I don’t know what to think
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring…
“Well, I think that is getting a little ahead. But the point is that I found our song. What do you think?” Etienne asked, grinning like an idiot, even though he was slightly nervous.
“I think that it has a few holes. For example, my father never hated you-”
“But mine hates…-d you.”
“Are you saying that you’re Juliette then?”
“You must admit it fits our story.”
“I suppose I could see us in that song,” Anna admitted.
“Are you sure? You’re not just saying that because you want me to shut up about it?” Etienne asked.
“Yes, yes, I’m sure. Our song is Love Story by Taylor Swift.” Anna smiled, “You really are a hopeless romantic, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I am! But you already knew that, and everything seems romantic when I’m in love with the most beautiful girl I know and she loves me back.”
