Good morning December

Summary:

A fairly typical morning in the Davidson-Fleming house.

Notes:

So! Happy advent people! Who knows how long I’ll actually be able to keep this up for, but I’m hoping to post a little 300 to 600 word story every day in December. (Which I know overshoots advent a bit, but the more the merrier?) Expect absolutely zero substantial content from this, it’ll be pure, tooth rotting fluff all the way through.

Not every single story will be super Christmassy, just generally wintery and cozy I think <3

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Jesus Christ, just five more minutes…” Jo mumbles into Kate’s neck as their six am alarm goes off. She’s vaguely aware of a shuffling next to her as Kate aims blindly for the snooze button, before knocking her phone off the bedside table completely.

Shit ” Kate groans before rolling out of bed onto the floor to retrieve her phone, which is now buzzing happily under their chest of drawers. “Fucking damn it.”

“And a very happy December to you too.” Jo sits up, having given up on getting those precious five minutes sleep, and switches on the lamp to see Kate in her pyjamas on her knees and elbows, arse in the air as she scrabbles for her phone. If she’s appreciating the view, well, that’s for her to know and for Kate to find out.

Finally Kate reaches her phone and turns the offending alarm off before turning to face Jo with the disgruntled, freshly woken look she wears so often in the early mornings. No matter how many years her job has forced her out of bed before the sun, Kate will never be a natural early riser. Less of the ‘bright eyed’ and more of the ‘bushy tailed’ until at least half nine, Jo thinks to herself as she watches Kate slowly blink her surroundings into a semblance of order.

“Is it really fucking December already?” Kate rubs her face before getting up to perch on the side of the bed.

“It is, Mrs Grinch.”

“I haven’t even thought about Christmas yet.”

“We’ve been so busy. Tell me a single night that one of us has been home before midnight this past week.”

“That’s your bloody fault for putting me forward for that promotion.” Kate gripes.

Jo fake pouts. “I thought you liked being DCI Davidson-Fleming.”

Kate sighs. “Na I do. It’s just… More work than you managed to make it look like.”

“You’re very good at it, my love.” Jo reaches out a hand to comfort her.

“Then why haven’t we caught this guy yet?”

“That’s as much on me as it is on you. My first case as a proper, formal DSU and I thought we’d have solved it by now.”

Kate opens her mouth to respond, but Jo’s phone begins ringing wildly, and as soon as she picks it up she jumps out of bed, barrelling towards their wardrobe. She manages a hissed “It’s Chris, massive break through in the case” to Kate before their room turns into a flurry of activity as they both dress at record speed. Kate hops across the room to their dressing table whilst pulling her socks on, and drags a brush through her bed hair, only narrowly missing smacking Jo in the face with it when she appears unexpectedly behind her in the mirror to take her own hair out of its customary night time plaits.

And then it’s out of the door into the freezing early morning, a shared ride to the Hill in Jo’s car that doesn’t really warm up in time, and a wistful glance at the coffee shop as they speed by.

So if they realise too late that they’ve mixed up their shirts in their hurry? Well. Kate looks good in a teal button up, and the stripes of warm yellow on Jo’s turtleneck bring out the flecks of gold in her eyes.

They suit each other.
