The Neighbor Across the Hall

Summary:

Who is the neighbor across the hall? It turns out neither of them are as normal as they seem to be.

Notes:

First of all, I wasn't planning to write this at all. But everyone was like "who is the neighbor???" so, here is your answer.

Second of all, inspiration credit goes to DisorganizedKitten and Wedge , who brought up the idea of the neighbor being something more than just a neighbor. Inspiration also goes to Flopyflor , who gave me the idea of having a character connected to S.H.I.E.L.D. (Although I know that this wasn't the way they intended it to be.)

Chapter 1: Who?

Chapter Text

Kostas Jones has never been one to be known as subtle . It was sort of ironic when you considered that he grew up in a household led by his S.H.I.E.L.D. agent parents. Especially since his mother had worked as a successful undercover agent in Greece for the majority of her unmarried life. You would think that some of their habits, mannerisms, and teachings would rub off on Kostas, but that ended up just being wishful thinking.

If you asked anyone who knew him, they would say that he wasn’t afraid to act and speak out. Now, that isn’t a bad thing. But, when a person is brought up to be a future S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and does not know when to turn that quality on or off, it can often be a problem. Kostas is also known to have trouble being stoic. This fact had led his first operative mission to only be half successful. All in all, it’s pretty easy to tell that Kostas Jones does not receive the award for S.H.I.E.L.D. agent of the month (and he doesn’t even come close to qualifying).

Any agent who had the poor chance of working with Kostas on an operative mission, immediately talked with a higher-up, recommending that Kostas work in another field — Kostas had the smarts to enter many others.  However, whether it was because of the higher-ups hoping that Kostas would learn to be great operative agents like his parents or Kostas not wanting to ruin his family’s wishes or entirely something else, he was never relocated to another field.

It was for this reason, Kostas supposed, that he was tasked to inhabit a certain apartment building in Midtown Manhattan. His orders, direct from Director Nick Fury, were to observe. Observe what ? Kostas Jones didn’t know. What he did know, though, was that he was up to the task. While he wasn’t that good at subtlety, he was great at figuring out things that were often obscured to others, even his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. From a few facts, he could construct an entire story or an entire plan, depending on the circumstances. His quick wits have helped him on many occasions. (Many said that if it wasn’t for the fact that Kostas lacked subtlety, he would be a perfect agent).

Kostas also wasn’t entirely sure why the Director tasked him to observe. He hoped it just wasn’t a method for S.H.I.E.L.D. to get him out of the way, although it had a high possibility. He wouldn’t know what to do if he ruined his parents’ names in such a way — it would break his heart. The mission would be a success. It had to be.
