Sweet Silence

Summary:

After defeating Gozer, the team heads back to what remains of the firehouse. The ride there is filled with silence though, the team still trying to process... well everything.

Work Text:

Driving back to the firehouse was… strange to say the least. They had the Ecto-1 and Dana’s car, so thankfully it wasn’t too cramped up in the car. However, Egon and Ray once again found themselves in the back seat together. It was a very strange situation to be in, especially remembering how their last drive was.

His mind kept wandering to how he acted when controlled by Zuul Obsessed with finding the Keymaster and well.. Linking with him.

Ray’s face reddened, looking out the other window. As honestly eager as he was for them to… grab dinner, he couldn’t not think about what had happened. It honestly seemed like most of them were still trying to process it all. Winston was focused on driving and not even Peter had a witty comment to give.

Honestly, that much he was thankful for considering how many dog puns he made after… after what Egon and Louis became.

As those thoughts came back, Ray looked over to Egon. His heart raced, half expecting to see that demon beast again but thankfully he saw his friend. Egon was deep in thought. Knowing him, he was probably trying to understand everything that happened in that. It was a lot for sure, he couldn’t imagine how he was handling it. It was certainly frightening to be on the other end… The amount of weird things he did or didn’t remember were on a list far longer than he could think, it didn’t help waking up in a stone husk or wearing the dress.

Licking his chapped lips nervously, Ray looked at Egon, who actually made eye contact with him. “Egon… I um, just wanted to say… It’s been good having you back.” As the words left his mouth he felt like screaming out loud.

There was a long pause on the other man's end, as if contemplating what he had said. “Thank you, Ray. I’m glad my presence was missed.” Egon said.

Peter cracked a grin from the smile, no longer able to suppress his silence, “I’m sure the keymaster really missed you.”.

Ray shot the man a glare, if they weren’t friends.

Chuckling to himself, looking at Winston with a knowing smirk. The other man simply nodded, both men having the same thought. When they reached the stop light, Winston held up two fingers, in response Peter held 40. “Forty says they will get together by the end of the week.” Peter whispered.

“What was that?”

“Nothing, Egon. We just missed having you around is all, Spengler.” Winston responded, before giving Peter a nod.

The bet was on.

After a while they arrived back at the firehouse. Well, the remains of it that was, no thanks to that dickbag Peck. “What happened?!” Egon exclaimed, hurrying out of the Ecto-1 as fast as he could in the dress.

“Buddy, we’re gonna have to do a whole presentation on what happened.” Peter scoffed, before an idea came to mind, running into the rubble of the firehouse.

Dana groaned as she climbed out of the car, watching him leave. “And there he goes.” She pinched the bridge of her nose, sighing, “Alright, let’s see what we can find in there. If anything managed to survive in the blast.”.

“You really don’t have help. It’s not necessary.” Ray insisted, “You’ve done so much for us already.”.

An amused grin formed on Winston’s face, looking at the two women, “Really came in clutch during that fight. That Gozer really wanted to wipe us off of the map.”.

“They had no taste for fashion.” Janine scoffed, shrugging the proton pack, “I better get a raise for lugging this thing up there! It was a work out and a half.”. As she headed inside, she shot them a look to show them that she wasn’t joking.

You know what, she deserved it. Kicked Walter Peck and got arrested then came to save them?

Soon enough the entire group headed into the wrecked firehouse, looking at the mess all around them. “This is going to be a nightmare to repair.” Egon muttered, “The lockers better be there still, the sooner I'm out of this damn thing the better.”. The scientist huffed, making his way up the stairs to look. No one was going to say it out loud, but honestly he had looked pretty good in that dress.

Egon made his way up the stairs, searching around. To his relief the lockers were still there. He hurried over to his, rummaging around, and found some replacement clothes. “The sooner I get out of this the better.” Egon hurried to one of the remaining rooms to change out of the god forsaken dress.

Closing the door behind him, Egon threw the dress off of him as fast as he could. He still couldn’t believe this. It was all so, he couldn’t even put words to it. He started pulling up the pair of pants he had grabbed.

While everyone else was doing their own thing, Ray made his way around the fire station. He wanted to see how badly it had been damaged in the blast and try to figure out what needed repairs immediately. As he walked around, he decided to start checking the rooms to see how they were fairing. If they were lucky they might not have to replace everything. Equipment wasn’t cheap and he doubted Egon would be too happy about remaking everything had already.

Towards the end of the hallway, Ray pushed his hand against the door, but stopped just as it barely cracked open.

Egon had casted off the gold dress he was wearing, understandable given the circumstances, hastily putting on some new clothes. He knew he should’ve backed away immediately when he saw him but he saw the nasty bruising on his back. Shit, it had to have been when the lightning struck him. The host bodies weren’t immune to any injuries they took and that seemed especially true now.

Shit, that probably meant he had a concussion.

Backing away from the door, Ray hurried down the stairs, his cheeks warming up as he made his way back. “How bad is the damage?” Winston asked, looking at him as he came back.

Ray cleared his throat nervously, looking at him, “It’s pretty bad. But if we get started and use what we saved up, we should be good.”.

“Well, let’s get to work then.” Dana smirked.
