Summary
He’s never cried this much in his life, never thought he had a legitimate reason to, never even considered that he ever would. Something heavy and warm closes around his throat, clasping with a small click and Darius makes a self-satisfied noise. His hands shoot out to grab at the fabric, to tear it away from him, but hesitate when instead of brushing fine silk they find cotton. It’s high quality, as expected because this is Darius’ cloak, but it's so different from the Golden Guard cape that his hands grip the fabric tighter instead of ripping it from his throat. The weight of it is both a painful reminder and a terrible comfort.
Then, softly, “I’ll take care of it, so please stop fighting me.”
Looking at the man is difficult, but Hunter manages it. He looks very serious, like he's in a meeting or negotiating for something important. It almost makes his laugh; why would Darius need any amount of agreement from Hunter?
“I promise.”
He didn’t ask Darius to, but maybe that’s what makes him believe it more.
ORRRRRRRRR I got my grubby hands on hollow mind and decided it wasn't BAD ENOUGH ALREADY.

'When it all ended it was quiet.
For an impossibly long minute, the air stood still and everything was more silent than ever in the Boiling Isles’ history. His breath stuck in his throat, as the Titan’s hand came to a halt. He stared as if it would fall any moment now. It never did.
Hunter felt something in him drop.'
When it's all over and everything - the exhaustion and all the loss - catches up with Hunter, it won't let him go. This feeling sinks its claws into him and he desperately tries not to lose it on the better days. On the worst ones, he sinks lower than he has ever been.

The little house by the woods where every herb known to man are hung from the cabinets and there’s always food on the table will always be Luz’s and Vee’s and Camila’s. The tables will be cleared and the party will end and the lights will go off, and the house will always be theirs.
But not his. It never will be his, because he’s Hunter—Wittebane or Belos’, it doesn’t matter. They all end up the same anyway. On an unmarked grave, a discarded pile in the darkness.
