Summary
Uther banned Christmas. The king opposes everything connected with the Old Religion and sees Christmas as nothing more than a pagan celebration of the solstice in a Christian guise. However, it seems that the people of Camelot have decided to secretly ignore the senseless law. Arthur notices this, but why should he be angry with the people who need to have fun from time to time? Ultimately, no matter what one's religion is, winter holidays have always been about hope and love.

Her voice was warm and her smile almost motherly. It made Merlin ache for the comfort of his home. He looked at her uncertainly. Merlin may have had a sheltered upbringing in his small farming village, but he could imagine what kind of work she had to offer him, and he wasn’t sure he wanted it. Still, he stood up, shaking slightly from hunger and exhaustion. There was something in this woman’s eyes that compelled Merlin to trust her.

In which Merlin is an equine veterinarian and Arthur is a jockey.
Merlin, a vet student, starts his final work placement at the stables of Uther Pendragon, current head of the Irish Horseracing Association. When Merlin refuses to sell a prime eventing horse to Uther, Uther insists Merlin must learn eventing and compete with the horse himself. Uther makes his son, Arthur, be Merlin's coach.
Arthur is an arrogant jockey and former eventer who argues with Merlin non-stop. But Merlin can't afford to lose his work placement. And Arthur is, to his credit, a surprisingly good teacher.
No horse knowledge needed.

Of all things Arthur might have expected from Gaius to be doing, he does not expect to find him in a part of the forest that his father has forbidden them from going to, kneeling before a grave in a setting he's never seen. And everyone in Camelot knows, that if something remains invisible, it is probably better off not being seen.
But when what he sees tells him truths about his mother, and the purge of magic he had followed at his father's command, and offers him a shot at setting the wrongs of his father right, and perhaps bringing a small part of his mother's spirit back to the kingdom she had helped to build, Arthur cannot look away.
Magic in Camelot is a crime worse than high treason. But snow falls, and Winter is kind, and Arthur knows this is the right thing to do, at any cost it may demand.
