He wondered if ‘Orpheus’ and ‘Eurydice’ were two names written in the universe to be together, as he couldn’t imagine the world he lived in before she stumbled before him. She smiled something small, self-deprecating and judgmental and skeptical, and he knew he’d do anything she asked for to prove to her he would never hurt her a day in his life. That he’d shield her from a hundred storms and weather any pain if it allowed the small smile on her face and soft giggles to fall from her lips as she spun around the bar in reckless abandon.

On the road to hell there was a railroad line. Persephone knew this fact with all her heart; she didn’t know where it was, what continent or country, but she did know that it was her final destination. One of two.
Heaven, and Hell. Paradise, and Purgatory. Hope, and Hadestown.
From where she stood next to the station at the edge of the latter, she could hear the trombone playing the familiar tune. She heard it every few months.

Orpheus' shoulders ache.
For the first time on this long, long, walk, he takes off his lyre. He cranes his neck around to look at his shoulder and is horrified to find that his shirt is completely soaked through with red.
He looks at the lyre in his lap and runs his hands along the leather strap attached to both ends of it. Then his fingers come across something wet.
When he draws his hand away, his fingers are stained red.

They were a young god, back then. But that was long ago, before they were on this road. Now their silver curls are truthful about their age – or they would be if they were human – and their feathered feet are worn and callused.

Summary
The two stumbled, the girl whipping around to brace her hands on Orpheus’s chest before she broke apart from him. Orpheus nearly dropped the bottle of wine in his hands, but his attention wasn’t on the alcohol.
It was on the girl in front of him.
The two stared at each other for a moment, a beat, as if time itself froze them together in a trace. The girl was transfixed, her guard slipping as she looked at the deer-like face of Orpheus. Orpheus looked back. Wide eyes and a slightly agape mouth, he took a step back from the girl. And as she stood still, Orpheus’s fingers drummed at the side of his pants.
Hermes recognized the look on the young musician’s face. He’d seen it so many times. The look of pure love, of enamoration, of obsession. But Hermes could tell there was something else mixed and lingering within the eyes of Orpheus, looking like a deer underneath a train’s blinding headlights.
The dread of realization.
