He craved a different life, but he never felt he had much choice in anything. Sometimes he felt like he had boarded a train with one brutal stop. After an incident in training, everyone finds out about Mordred's true age. After that, the people around Mordred find out more and more about how much Mordred has truly been hiding from them.

Merlin isn't there.
-
“Okay, so let me get this straight,” Arthur said, resisting the urge to bury his face in his hands and scream until the world made sense again. “We’ve all been reborn over a thousand years after our deaths, met one another, seemingly by chance, then all regained our memories on the same day, while wandering around a museum exhibit on our previous lives. Did I miss anything?”

Summary
When Morgana Pendragon casts a spell in Camelot, she doesn’t expect to land in a glass tower in National City—face to face with a woman who looks exactly like her.
Lena Luthor assumes it’s one of her brother’s tricks. Morgana assumes she’s lost her mind.
They’re both wrong.
As science clashes with sorcery, Lena sets out to send Morgana home—before paradoxes unravel everything. But the longer Morgana stays, the more unsettling the truth becomes: she isn’t just a stranger. She’s a reflection. A possibility. A warning.
And as Kara Danvers and Alex Danvers get pulled into the chaos, lines blur—between worlds, between choices, and between the people they are and the people they could have been.
Because the most dangerous question isn’t how to send Morgana back.
It’s what happens when Lena realizes how easily she could become her. -

Summary
”He’s recently watched his first love die, sire.”
Arthur froze, and Morgana felt an uncharacteristic laugh bubble in her throat. She swallowed it down.
Merlin left. Because his first love died.
That does seem like the kind of thing to break him, doesn’t it?
OR

Desperate for a break from destiny, Merlin leaves Camelot. He returns over a year later, but things are not the same. He has people-- and dragons-- to look after. And there comes a problem when Morgana starts behaving strangely, her glares towards Arthur a little too angry to be normal...

Summary
...“You shouldn’t be here…’s not safe.”
Merlin doesn’t stop, either not hearing him or ignoring the warning. Probably the latter.
He crosses in front of him, and Arthur notices that his shirt is splattered with blood. “You’re bleeding,” Arthur whispers.
Merlin continues. “It’s not my blood, don’t worry.”
Arthur’s brain tries to make sense of that statement, fails, and promptly moves on.
Merlin huffs in satisfaction when the last of the chains are removed. With nothing holding him up, Arthur slumps forward and falls into him, and Merlin lets out a little “oof” as he struggles with the sudden weight.
I love you, Arthur thinks, as Merlin grunts and lifts him up, throwing his arm around his shoulder, somehow lifting his full weight. I love you. Merlin's blurry face swims above him, glancing down at Arthur every few seconds in concern, trying to figure out a plan to get out of here with Arthur's depleted strength. I love you. I love you. I love you... -

Summary
The man was beautiful. Hair as gold as dawn sunlight, eyes like the endless blue depths of a midsummer afternoon. His face was a marble angel’s, the lines of brow and cheek and jaw almost too mathematically perfect. Every good sculptor always knew to put in a flaw. His was in his front teeth, just a little too large, and it made Merlin dig his fingernails into his palms. He was lithe, muscular, dressed in black. Half-dressed - his jerkin was unbuttoned, his shirt open nearly to his navel, and he was missing a sock. His hair had the raked-through look of a man in crisis. His smile was dazzling and mad.
“This,” he said, spreading his hands, “is the magnificent - nay, the opulent court of the Crown Prince of Camelot!”
And then, very pleasantly - “Gaius, what the fuck is this?”
OR - When Merlin goes to find Gaius, he's told that he's left Camelot. Tracing his would-be mentor, Merlin finds himself at a tumbledown castle on the edge of a hill. There are chickens, radishes, a knight who'd much rather focus on his squash and a strange voice calling in the night. And a secret hidden in the heart of Castle Perilous. The secret behind the most important rule: don't bleed.

Summary
If serving Arthur was Merlin's destiny, then why was Morgana the one he felt inexorably drawn to?
Every time his thoughts followed this trail, he felt the press of the dragon’s prophecy, the beast's rasping words so potent it was as if they were etched into his skin like scales. Arthur was the one he was meant to serve. Arthur was the one who would make it safe for magic users to thrive once again in Camelot.
So why was it Morgana he couldn’t help but fixate on?
--
OR A Morgana-centric BBC Merlin rewrite in which Merlin doesn't blindly listen to Gaius and finds connection with Morgana amongst the dangers of Uther's court. Burdened by destiny but hounded by desire, Merlin navigates the treacherous path of fate. Morgana attempts to walk the righteous road but makes difficult, and often bad, choices in her quest for a just world.

In Camelot, legend has it that unicorns are benevolent creatures known to swoop in and save helpless madiens, allowing only women close enough to touch them
Merlin thinks it’s not that simple, and he supposes he’s probably correct when one day a unicorn gives its favor to the Crown Prince, Arthur

There's something off about the way Merlin is looking at Arthur. He's nervous, awkward and instead of hiding his suspicious behaviour with insults or jokes. He drowns Arthur's concerns with kisses.
or....
In which Mordred disguises himself as Merlin to destroy Camelot from the inside. However, he mistakenly believes Merlin and Arthur are in an extremely intense, romantic relationship.
