The day began like all other. Arthur groaned as he stretched on his pillow, the faint glow of the sun peaking through the closed curtains of their bed. He yawned as he turned to his left, gazing upon the black hair which was the only thing visible from his husband hiding underneath the blanket. He smiled as he turned over to just look at Merlin in the quiet moments of the morning, belonging just to them.

The words got stuck in Arthur's throat as he watched his sister's face pale, her expression morphing into disbelief and panic.
“Morgana, what—?”
He couldn't finish, because she clenched her fists and the nearest barrel caught flames from nothing. Her green eyes emitted lightning, flashing gold, like the embodiment of heavenly fury. She waved her hand, extinguishing the fire she caused, then turned towards him.
“It was Merlin,” she said, voice cold as ice. “They can't find Mordred.”

Gaius ushers them in. “I was just gathering my things to come check in on you. How are you feeling?”
“Uh, headache. Deeply wrong.” And then Merlin adds offhandedly, “Oh, and like I’ve switched bodies with the Crown Prince of Camelot.”
Or: Merlin and Arthur accidentally swap bodies. This would be a great opportunity for Merlin to relish in making Arthur muck out the stables, if the prat hadn't also gotten Merlin's magic in the exchange.

Arthur finds out Merlin has magic. He also finds out how often Merlin risked his life for him and so, he does the only thing he can think of to protect him: banishment.
Hurt and angry, Merlin leaves and swears to not look back.
But, when two years pass and Morgana shows up at Merlin’s door, urging him to fill Gaius’ position as Court Physician, Merlin agrees. He really doesn’t know why, but Arthur is sure Merlin would do just about anything to get on his nerves.
Unprepared for the shock of seeing Merlin back in the castle, Arthur is forced to speed along his plans to lift the ban on magic. But between stubborn councilors, a mysterious plague, a still angry Merlin, and Morgana being Morgana, Arthur is fairly certain he’ll lose his mind before the first year of his reign even ends.

“What do you mean?” Merlin asked.
Morgana shrugged, setting aside her cup and rubbing her arms despite the room’s lack of chill, and Arthur stood to drape a cloak across her shoulders. She squeezed his hand in gratitude, then looked to Merlin with a shake of her head. “I don’t know, exactly. It’s like whatever this feeling was, it came from another person. Someone who’s searching for this valley with the lone tower. And whoever they are… they’re desperate to find it.”

Of all things Arthur might have expected from Gaius to be doing, he does not expect to find him in a part of the forest that his father has forbidden them from going to, kneeling before a grave in a setting he's never seen. And everyone in Camelot knows, that if something remains invisible, it is probably better off not being seen.
But when what he sees tells him truths about his mother, and the purge of magic he had followed at his father's command, and offers him a shot at setting the wrongs of his father right, and perhaps bringing a small part of his mother's spirit back to the kingdom she had helped to build, Arthur cannot look away.

Merlin hopes to convince Arthur that magic is totally good instead of him and Morgana just being an exception. Morgana, meanwhile, hopes to convince him to usurp his father. As allies are gathered and Arthur realizes the injustice in his kingdom, it looks more and more like he will have to act in a drastic way. A way he dreads.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Merlin are growing closer and closer and might just have feelings for each other. Something they probably should be better about realizing, considering the example of Gwen and Morgana right next to them.

Gwen has spent years devoting her life and labor to one Lady Morgana, all to ensure her comfort, and she assures herself that the feelings coming up time and time again that her feelings are normal, that every maid feels such love and devotion towards her mistress; there's nothing untoward about that in the slightest. That is, until a storm forces them into a rundown inn with very few rooms to spare, and Morgana wakes in the night, mistaking Gwen's shaky gasps and forehead slick with sweat to be signs of a fever. In attempting to care for her, the two must navigate their very large feelings in a very small room - and to make matters worse, there's only one bed.
A short-ish fic that started as a one-shot but is now going to be about four chapters spanning around 12k words total.
