Book 1 of the series.
Bad at summaries, but this is basically a canon rewrite and this particular book is only season 1.
Arthur wants to be the protective, scary boyfriend that everyone fears, but that is actually Merlin. It is a slow burn, but that is only one-sided. Arthur is very quick to be intrigued, but Merlin wants nothing to do with him, which does change. The slow burn for an established relationship is real, but the protectiveness starts very early. Merlin is Arthur's anchor of self-restraint, a light in his life, much like how I imagine Ygraine was for Uther.

Summary
When Merlin's magic is exposed shortly before season 2 starts, the path of destiny starts changing forever. Now on the run with Arthur, Morgana, and Gwen. Merlin hopes to convince Arthur that magic is totally good instead of him and Morgana just being an exception. Morgana, meanwhile, hopes to convince him to usurp his father. As allies are gathered and Arthur realizes the injustice in his kingdom, it looks more and more like he will have to act in a drastic way. A way he dreads.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Merlin are growing closer and closer and might just have feelings for each other. Something they probably should be better about realizing, considering the example of Gwen and Morgana right next to them.

Merlin likes his sleep. He likes it so much, in fact, that when he was still in high school, his mother had to resort to drastic measures in order to get him up in the morning. The most effective of these- including but not limited to a bucket of ice cold water, an air horn, and once an entire mariachi band playing at the foot of Merlin's bed- turned out to be the smell of cooking bacon and pancakes, accompanied by the sounds of sizzling grease and butter.
