Summary
When Percival finds Merlin mourning on the shore of Avalon and tells him that Gwaine has been killed, Merlin refuses to accept it as fact. Racing back to Brineved, he finds Gwaine unconscious and hanging onto life by a thread, but this time his magic is actually enough to bring him back from the brink of death. Heading through to the kitchen, Merlin went to flick the kettle on, stopped by the note propped up against it. ‘Bedroom ;) xxx’ it read in a familiar, untidy scrawl—although the author had evidently tried his best to print it slightly more neatly than usual. Merlin shook his head at the hand-drawn winky face, before actually taking in what the note said. He took the stairs two at a time, crashing into his childhood bedroom, stopping dead a step inside the doorway.

Still, he stood up, shaking slightly from hunger and exhaustion. There was something in this woman’s eyes that compelled Merlin to trust her.

Merlin closes his eyes, letting out the breath he’s been holding. He feels his back hit the door behind him, holding himself up against it. He doesn’t look at Arthur, just waits.
One breath, two breath, three breath. Nothing.
Merlin opens his eyes, looking up, half expecting Arthur to have disappeared to alert the guards. Arthur is staring at him, he is stock skill, breath coming out ragged and uneven. He looks crushed and not just from expelling his father’s spirit but that must also have contributed to it.
“Arthur,” Merlin tries, swallowing when his voice shakes with the anticipation of Arthur’s reaction.
“Is it true?” Arthur asks, his voice quiet but stern, he still holds the horn tightly in his grip by his side, his knuckles white with the force.

It took well over a full moon cycle for Merlin to be able to push open Gwaine’s chambers door. Well over a moon cycle before he could even make it into the knight’s halls without the heavy weight of remorse and regrets forcing him onto the ground with his breath refused to enter his lungs. Well over a moon cycle of a loud type of grief he was so very unaccustomed to letting see the light of day.
