Work Text:

Sorel dodged to the side as a bandit tried to attack him from behind. He waved his staff, sending a spell directly at the bandit. It knocked them off their feet, sending them into a tree.

“Of course we happened to run into bandits,” sighed Dorian.

“Would you rather fight what we normally have to fight?” Sorel asked as he looked over at him.

“Still all this and we have not even had a chance to rest. Or even eat,” He sighed.

“We will soon,” Cassandra said.

“Sure hope so! I’m starving!” Sera said, complaining loudly.

“Well we can stop and rest soon,” Sorel said.

“There should be a group of bandits still up ahead still. We have to take care of them first.” Cassandra said.

“Then can we find food?” Sera asked.

“Yes. I’m sure we can find food after,” the Inquisitor told them. Sorel turned and moved in the direction. He walked up the hill and slowed his pace.

“Be careful,” Sorel warned them.

“I’m always careful,” Dorian said.

“Course ya are,” Sera said, notching an arrow and firing it at one of the bandits.

“I am careful,” Dorian said, sending a bolt of lightning at another bandit. “See? Careful.”

“Ya ya ya. Just keep that wavy-zap-stick pointed away from me ya?” She said sending another arrow at a bandit who ran at her. Sorel just shook his head moving to the side, sending a spell of his own at another bandit.

The fight continued normally but when two bandits ran at him, one of them managed to cut his arm a bit. Yet, he managed to get that one away through a blast of his staff. He was a moment too slow as the other bandit raised their sword to strike. That blow never came as a dagger whizzed past the Inquisitor’s face hitting the bandit.

“Are you alright?” Dorian asked as he came to Sorel’s side.

“I am fine Dorian,” he told him.

“Well luckily the bandit that threw that dagger has a bad aim,” Dorian said.

“If I wanted him dead I would have killed him sooner,” a voice said. They stepped out of the shadows, they were a short Dalish elf with silver hair. They had a pair of sharp blue eyes oddly similar to Sorel. She walked past them and retrieved her dagger. Before she turned to go over to Sorel and punched him in the gut.

“THAT'S FOR MAKING ME WORRY YOU DUMB-NUG-BRAINED IDIOT!” She snapped at him angrily.

Sorel grunted while holding his side and said, “ah. It’s good to see you too asa'ma'lin .”

“Inquisitor- are you alright?” Cassandra asked, looking between the two of them confusion on her face.

“I’m fine. She had hit me harder when we were kids. Kathra, this is Dorian, Cassandra, and Sera. Everyone? I would like you to meet my little sister Kathra.” Sorel said.

“You have a sister?” Sera asked.

“I have two actually. This is one of them,” Sorel said.

“So. This is your Inquisition?” She asked.

“Some of them. Yes.” He said. “Are you out here yourself or are the others-”

“Yeah. We have camped up the road.” Kathra said. “I take it you’ll come and see everyone until you have to move on to whatever world-saving thing you have to do? Since if you can’t I do not want to be the one to tell them you-”

“Alright...besides we do need a place to rest and eat,” Sorel said.

“What? We are gonna eat with Elfy elves?” Sera groaned.

“We do need a place to eat and rest, Sera,” Cassandra said to her.

“Look at it this way. You can find out embarrassing stories as a child,” Sorel said to her. That got her to smirk and snort at that. Sorel turned to Kathra and nodded.

“Lead the way,” He said. Kathra shrugged and began walking down the road. As they walked Dorian came to step up beside her and Sorel.

“It is a pleasure to meet you. Our dear inquisitor has spoken a great deal about you.” Dorian said to her.

“Uh-huh.” She said giving him a once over before she turned to her brother and asked, “You’re courting him?”

“Kathra!” He said lightly as he did blush some.

“So yes then,” She said as she turned back to Dorian. This small interaction caused Sera to snort from laughter. Sorel just covered his face with his hand shaking his head.

“Ah. So he spoke of me in his letters to you and his family?” Dorian asked with a grin.

“Yeah. If you hurt him, no one will find your body,” Kathra said to Dorian seriously flipping a dagger in her hand. Sorel reached over and placed a hand on his sister’s shoulder.

“Kathra...please...enough,” Sorel said with a soft groan.

“Fine,” She said rolling her eyes and just contiued on leading them to the Lavallen Camp.

When they entered the camp Sorel smiled as he looked around at his home. Dorian gazed around a bit and then looked at Sorel. “This was where you grew up?” He asked.

“Technically,” He replied to him. “But yes. This is my home.”

“It is...nice,” Cassandra said unsure of what else to say. Sorel was about to reply but there was a loud shout.

“ BA’ISA’MA’LIN !!” A young voice screamed “ MA ARLA !”

The small thing shot at him running across the ground as fast as their small legs could carry them. The boy shot himself at his chest. Sorel tumbled backward as he caught the boy and he ended up falling on the ground. The boy attached himself to Sorel’s chest hugging them as tightly as he could.

“ MA ARLA! MA ARLA! ” The boy screamed happily.

“ Tamahn ma ane da sa !” Sorel laughed ruffling the boy’s hair. Sorel smiled as he sat up holding the small child. Dorian looked at the small one and then at Sorel. This boy couldn’t have been his child...right? That did not make sense. The boy did not really look like him...same eyes…

“This is Yerel, he is my nephew,” Sorel said as he looked at Dorian trying not to laugh more at his face. “Yerel. Do you want to say hello to them? They are helping me.”

“Hellow,” The boy said moving his head to look at them. He gave a little wave and went back to hugging Sorel.

“Yerel is the son of my eldest sister,” Sorel said as he just contiued on with the boy attached to him. “And there she is. Her name is Serari.”

“You are home?” Serari asked as she came over. Yet she looked at those who were with him. “Or are you here to rest for a bit before you go off again and save the world?”

“Both,” He said. “Everyone this is Serari. Serari this is Cassandra, Sera, and Dorian.”

“Greetings. Thank you for keeping an eye on my brother,” Serari said as she looked too them.

“It is our job to be sure he is safe. He is the Inquisitor,” Cassandra said.

“If it is your job or not. I thank you for it.” She said. “I will tell the Keeper you are here, there is an open area over there where you can rest.”

“Thank you Serari,” Sorel said.

“Not a problem...Inquisitor,” She said with a smile. She then moved away to another area in the camp that was set up. Sorel looked to the others and gestures with his head.

“It is this way,” He said. Sorel walked over towards the area that was open for them. He knew that his nephew would not be letting go of him so soon.

“Are you sure your leader would be fine with us staying?” Cassandra asked.

“Yes. I am sure they’ll be fine with us staying,” Sorel said as he sat down leaning against a tree.

“Well at least I can get some embarrassing stories,” Sera sighed as she plopped herself down. “As long as they don’t act too elfy.”

Sorel chuckled as Yerel turned around a bit cuddling against his uncle and looked at the group curiously. He then looked up at his uncle. “They are your friends?”

“That’s right,” Sorel said to him. “This is Dorian, Cassandra, and Sera. Dorian is a mage like me. Cassandra is a warrior just like your Bae . Sera is a rouge, kinda like a hunter. Like ma'asa'ma'lin Kathra.”

“Ooo!” He said clapping his hands excitedly. “Ima gonna be a hunter too!”

“Is that so?” Sera asked folding her arms. The boy nodded excitedly and puffs out his chest proudly with a big grin.

“Gonna help like ba'isa'ma'lin ! Wanna help him now... Mae said no.” He said.

“You have been helping. Those letters you sent made me happy,” Sorel said to the boy.

“Really?” He asked excitedly with wide eyes. “I’m gonna send you letters every week. NO! Everyday!”
“I look forward to them,” Sorel told him ruffling his hair. The boy grinned and hugged him tightly again. “Okay. Okay, Yerel I need to breathe.”

Yerel turned around and sat down beside Sorel again leaning into his side again. Looking back to the others. He then burst into a long barrage of questions about everything going on. From in Skyhold to what exactly do they do. He was so excited to hear about those who were with his uncle.

“I’ll be more than happy to tell you all about our grand adventures but you will have to slow down….and not use Elvhen.” Dorian said.

“You don’t know Elvhen?” Yerel asked.

“Sadly I do not,” He replied.

“Oh...Okay. What do you do in Skyhold?” the boy asked.

“I do lots of different things to help out. I mostly use my unique skills in the library.” He said. “As well as help your uncle on these...adventures.”

“What do you do in the libar...libary?” He asked.

“I go through books and find things,” Dorain told him.

“What kind of things?” Yerel asked.

“He studies magic and helps us find out about things we come across,” Sorel explained. “And easy on the questions now.”

“Fine,” Yerel sighed pouting a little at not being able to ask ALL his questions.

“It is fine. You can continue your questions,” Dorian said. Yerel gave a cheer and contiued to ask him and Cassandra about many different things. Sera went off to find someone to ask about embressining stories from Sorel’s childhood, so Yerel could not ask her his questions.

After a few more minutes passed Serari came over with some food for them. “Yerel it is dinner time.” She said.

“Can I eat here with ba'isa'ma'lin and his friends? Please?” He asked. “Please?”

“If they do not mind,” She said. Sorel looked to Cassandra and Dorian who were fine with that.

“That is fine,” Sorel said. Yerel cheered happily and clapped his hands. While he went back to his questions Serari turned back to Sorel and spoke to him in Elvhen. He nodded and got up to his feet.

“I would be right back. I want to talk to my parents.” He said to them.

“Of course,” Dorian said. He smiled and gave them both a nod. As he left Serari gave them food she brought with her.

“We have our own. It is fine,” Cassandra said.

“You have taken care of one of our own. This is the least we can do to thank you,” Serari said to her as she gave her son his food.

“Well thank you,” she replied.

“Of course,” Serari said as she turned back to her son. “Now. After dinner, we do have to get you to bed.”

“can I have five more minutes…he is SO far away now. Wanna stay with him for longer.” He complained. Clearly, he loved his uncle.

“I’ll talk to him and you’ll have to ask too.” She said.

“Okay.” He replied a bit more hopeful now. He jumped up and bolted off to find his uncle to ask him. Dorian chuckled a bit as he watched this.

“It is strange to see the Inquisitor like this,” Cassandra said.

“Yes. We have to bring him here more often. He is so wound up at times with working. Now he is relaxed we just have to help you, Seeker.” Dorian said turning to her. She gave him a small glare before she turned to eat her food. Dorian laughed and looked at the food it was brought.

Sorel soon returned holding Yerel who was excitedly holding him with a happy grin. He walked back to them and sat down. “I am sorry for all the trouble that has come up.” He said.

“It is fine,” Cassandra said. “Your family has not seen you in some time.”

“We should send you here more often. You are rather relaxed here.” Dorian said.

“Well, it is nice being able to relax for a bit.” He said. “Besides I did miss my family.”

“I had no idea you were so close,” Cassandra said.

“Yes. I am rather close to my family,” Sorel said. “To be honest I never really had time to talk about them. We have been very busy with everything.”

“You should stop if you do work too much,” Yerel said looking up at Sorel who laughed with Dorian.

“Yes! I agree with him on this,” Dorian said.

“ Mae says I get cranky if I do not sleep,” Yerel said to him causing him to laugh again.

“Yes. Speaking of you need sleep soon.” Sorel said to him.

“Five more minutes...besides you say I can stay wit you! If your gonna stay up wanna stay up with you!” Yerel complained holding onto him looking up at him giving him the saddest face he can manage.

“Fine. Five more minutes then you need to sleep but you can still stay with me. Okay?” He asked him.

“YAY!” Yerel cheered and jumped on top of Serel hugging him. The older elf got caught off guard and fell back from Yerel’s hug attack.

“Okay. Okay. Let me sit up though,” Sorel said. Yerel got off him and Sorel sat up letting Yerel sit beside him. He stayed up happy to talk with Dorian and Cassandra with his uncle. Yet, as time passed Yerel ended up falling asleep curled up against Sorel’s side. Sorel moved a blanket over the boy and held him as he moved to make their next set of plans with Cassandra and Dorian.

“Should we get Sera to finish these plans?” Dorian asked.

“No. She and Kathra most likely started to talk. I figured those two will get along.” Sorel said. “We will tell her the plans in the morning. Oh. Tomorrow Clan Lavallen is leaving as well and we are heading the same way. So we will be traveling with them for a bit before we have to part ways.”

“Your leader is fine with this?” Cassandra asked.

“Yes.” He said. “Besides...she told me that there are bandits that have been the area. I want to be sure they are fine until they get past the area.”

“Of course Inquisitor,” She said. Sorel nodded and contiued on with their planning until it got late enough and they had to rest for the night. Dorian watched as Sorel properly tucked in his nephew into a bedded area with what looked like a stuffed Halla.

“It is nice to see you like this,” Dorian said as he came over to him.

“Like what?” He asked.

“Happy and relaxed. You should try that more often.” Dorian said.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Sorel said with a laugh. “Oh...I do have to tell you one thing. In the morning my parents want to meet you.”

“Me?” He asked gesturing to himself.

“Well based on my letters they figured out that we have a bit of relationship. They want to see who I fell for.” Sorel said.

“Oh...I see,” Dorian said.

“Do not worry. They are just curious...they do not bite.” He said as he moved to lay down.

“Are they fine with me being from Tevinter?” Dorian asked.

“They are still unsure. That is why they want to meet you but you’ll be fine.” He told him.

“Did you have to tell me this right before I went to sleep?” Dorian asked.

“I am sorry but it will be fine Dorian. They will like you. Besides Yerel already approves,” He said gesturing to his nephew. “And to be honest. The two you have to worry about more are my sisters. They are protective of me.”

“Ah. I shall keep that in mind,” He said as he watched Sorel lay down and turn to his side to sleep. He watched him for a few moments before he saw that Sorel fell asleep quickly. Dorian sighed and laid down his mind on this upcoming meeting. He knew he was going to be fine but a part of him was still rather nervous. Now was the bigger issue which was actually falling asleep. He hated falling asleep outside. What he slept on was never soft enough. Yet, after a bit, he fell asleep as well.
