Work Text:

You and me, our life is drifting along
Watching the world as it's singing its song
High above, someone is calling to me
Life is for living and living is free

All these years you have been looked down upon, as if you were just another one of millions and trillions of people. You had never been able to see this city from above. And like so many days in your life before, you believed that it would never happen.

If you weren't wrong about that.

On that day, which changed your life, you were trapped in the center of Gotham, after you had not only been fired by your employer - Wayne Enterprises - but your vehicle - an old used car, which you had been able to afford recently, in addition to your already high living expenses - had not started, despite long and desperate attempts. Missing all public transport, you decided to walk the endless way home. In the same breath, expressing the desire to finally step through your front door, you wished that your journey would never end. Because arriving would also have meant dealing with all the hurdles that now lay ahead of you. Soon you wouldn't even be able to pay the rent. So many thoughts were circling around you that the last thing you thought about was how to feed yourself in the future.

Your life was turned upside down. And if nobody would come on the scene in the next second and turn off the lights of the whole city, you would have no choice, other than to find the power cable yourself and take it out.

Sometimes you believed that your thoughts could be heard by others. Because as soon as you had let this idea end with a dot, all conceivable electronic means of the city - neon signs, street lamps, monitors, the traffic light system - turned into radiant green.

This handwriting was familiar to you, and as you looked up at the man whose face stood out on one of the screens, you recognized him even before he told the world his name.

"Edward..." you spoke in a whisper, addressing only yourself.

"But you can call me..."

"The Riddler," you knew, because you were the first and only person he ever confided in.

You understood him like no one else could. The thought that you would never meet him again had made you sad. To hear him play his one trump card made you smile, and the sorrow in you faded away.

"There are two sisters, each gives birth to the other," you heard his words as if he were standing not far from you.

"Who are they?"

You spun around and there he stood.

"Here is your hint," he exclaimed. "One sister says..."

"I am the day," you began, but your voice could not drown out his over the city.

You noticed his smile turning into a sneaky grin. "And the other sister says..."

"I am the night."

He strode toward you, unnoticed by everyone. Uniquely towards you. Because you were the person who needed a helping and understanding hand placed against the cheek the most.

"So bring on the dark, dark night!"

***

This event had happened months ago. The city had changed. And you had changed as well. You were no longer the small gray mouse that everyone looked down on.

It was Edward who proved to you how important it was to meet at the same level. Every day. All the time. And yet you thought you could never live up to his demands.

And you were wrong about that, too.

He really had to prove himself to you, until you really believed it from the bottom of your heart. No challenge would ever be too hard for him. You were worth every effort to him.

You sat on the roof of the tallest building and the tragic feelings, which had flooded your body and mind months ago, seemed foreign to you. Now you were feeling satisfied while looking at the city below you.

Preoccupied with your inner self, you did not notice Edward, who had joined you on this dawning morning.

"Turn around and see the circles we spin," he gently began to break the silence.

It was not until that second, that you realized that you had never seen Edward observe such a long period of silence before.

"And we're taking our chances on where we begin."

Neither, at that moment, did he speak to you at all. His voice rose to a gentle chant.

The eyes behind his mask - all the disguise was that always conjured up cheerfulness on your face, for never could you resist this man - could not hide their gleam as he saw you leaning against the parapet and beginning to enjoy life.

"Up above, the rain is falling on me."

Not even the rain could touch you anymore. Soaked, you stood before him and couldn't be happier. Because now the whole world laid at your feet.

"Life is for living and living is free."

Your throat escaped that sweet giggle that he loved more and more with each time.

Edward overcame the few feet and strode towards you with an elegance, which already revealed his intention to you. He reached for your fingers, which he entwined with his own, and leaned down to you. His lips are gently touching your forehead, as you feel his warm breath brush across your face.

"You to me, are like the sun in the sky."

Keeping your eyes closed, you offered him all your trust and let him guide you.  He spun around with you in his arms, until he made you take the place on his two feet, so that you no longer felt any ground underneath your own and a weightless feeling overcame you.

"See how you fly you have wings of your own."

From his voice you could not only guess his smile. You felt it, leaning against him and taking in all his warmth as you tentatively opened your eyes again to look up at him.

He bound you to his body by wrapping one arm around you. He then put his free hand to your cheek. Strands got caught in his fingers due to the wind, which he placed behind your ear in a caressing motion. You leaned toward the affection. Your surrender was enough for him to lean down to you again.

"You and me, our love will last without end," he sang, breathing against your lips.

Taking hold of them, he moved with you while the sun gained height above the horizon. Surrounded by its rays, he only weakly detached himself from you to wrap you even more in bliss.

"Ride with the wind won't you follow me home."
