Work Text:

Jay violently slams the door as he walks in, making Tim flinch.

"...Jay? Are you ok?" Tim hesitantly asks, already knowing the answer as his friend's anger practically radiates off of him.

"I'm fine." Jay grumbles. Tim gives him a well-deserved skeptical look, and Jay slumps into a chair, staring at a window to avoid the brown eyes gazing at him.

"Jay."

"I'm fine." Jay's voice was monotone, cold– he was never like this, something serious must have happened.

"Jay you know I won't give up until you tell me what's up–" Tim determinedly says, continuing before Jay could interrupt. "–and don't try to say there's nothing wrong because I know there's something wrong."

Jay sighs and mumbles.

"Louder."

"I... I went to see Alex."

"Jay!" Tim exasperatedly says.

"I know I shouldn't have gone but... I just wanted to know..."

"Know what?"

"I... I wanted to know... why he broke up with me..." Jay quietly says, looking down to his lap.

"Jay!" Tim repeats, making Jay shamefully slump in the chair.

Tim sighs. "Sorry... need a hug?"

Jay nodded and Tim goes over. He tightly cuddles Jay, and feels Jay hold him just as tight back. They stay like that for a minute, which in Tim's mind, feels like a blissful eternity.

However, no matter how lovely the endless hug felt, Tim couldn't help but verbally express the burning curiosity bubbling in his mind; "What did he say?"

"Hm?" It seems Jay had also gotten lost in the warmness of the hug.

"What... what did Alex say?" Tim asks, immediately regretting bringing the topic up after their silence, fearing Jay would feel worse.

Jay takes a deep breath. "He said he found someone else. He said... he said he'd been seeing her while we were still together."

"He was cheating on you?" Tim, eyes wide, asks. Jay nods and hugs Tim even tighter, Tim rubbing Jay's back comfortingly.

"He... he also said... that he was moving away..." It seems the reality of the whole encounter with Alex was hitting Jay now, triggering more than just anger as he tried to choke back his tears.

Tim looks thoughtful for a second, cogs turning in his mind. "It's for the best." He says confidently. "I'm not going to lie to you Jay, he's been an asshole recently. I don't know what happened, but he has been. I know you think of him as amazing and everything, but seriously, he's been like this for a while."

A sadness stirs in Jay's eyes, and he closes them solemnly.

"I'm sorry Jay." Tim sighed. "You always see the good in everyone, I know, but with Alex... it isn't worth it. With him, you're only going to get more hurt. So trust me, let him go."

Jay stares at Tim, looking him right in his dark eyes swirling with emotion. "Ok?" Tim gently strokes Jay's cheek as he nods.

"Thanks. Really, thank you." Jay sadly smiled.

Tim smiled back and continued hugging Jay, both of them frozen in unspoken emotion.
