Work Text:
The day was long and unending, at least to Leonard. He'd been stuck in medbay working for who knows how long, running on nothing but a granola bar and six cups of coffee. The last diplomatic mission had gone about as well as you'd expect. Which was horrible. It went horribly.
Dozens of red shirts had been sent to med bay practically dead as they were rolled through the door. Young face after young face, innocent soul after innocent soul. He was a doctor, not a magician. Each one was stolen from this world, right through Leonard's hands. He was shaking as he stumbled back to his quarters, exhausted. His uniform was covered in blood and he probably smelled like Death itself. He was so cold, cradling himself as he slipped into his quarters.
He stood there for the longest time, unable to move. He could still see their faces, their eyes as they pleaded for life. Leonard shivered, eyes stinging as he gasped for breath. He feared his lungs would give out on him. Eventually, he forced himself into the bathroom to shower and couldn't bear to look at himself in the mirror, but he showered all the same. He was reluctant to leave the warm spray, partially hoping it would drown him. Leonard stepped out of the shower and dried himself, pulling on plaid pajama pants and an oversize tee. He was about to go to his own quarters when something popped up in his head. He could go to Scotty's quarters. His mind was swimming, so there wasn't much pushback on that idea. At the time, it had seemed like a great idea.
He totally had a crush on Scotty, so this was possibly the dumbest thing he'd ever done in his life. But he couldn't stand to be alone right now with his nasty thoughts. He just wanted company.
But Montgomery wasn't there, in his quarters. Leonard tried not to deflate. He was probably working an extra shift for the sake of the ship. Leonard knew he should go back to his own quarters and sleep, but he couldn't. His feet refused to move.
His body had apparently made up its mind as to where he was staying tonight. This wasn't even the first time they shared a bed. Every time both of them were on an away team,e they shared a bed, which didn't sound like a lot but it was. There were many times when Montgomery had come to his quarters looking for companionship. Leonard's door had always been open to a friend, with Jim, Nyota, and Scotty.
But Leonard had never been in here, asking for comfort. He knew deep down that Montgomery wouldn't mind, but there was still doubt that he was imposing and being a bother, intruding on his space.
He slowly made his way to the bed and pulled back the covers, sliding down and getting comfortable. The sheets smelled like pine and sandalwood, just like Scotty.
In the next moment, Leonard was asleep.
Montgomery didn't know what he was expecting when he got back to his quarters, but it certainly wasn't this. When he commanded the lights on, there was the doctor, fast asleep in his bed. He was laying on his stomach, his face pressed to the pillow. His oversize t-shirt slipped down revealing his collar bone. It was the most beautiful sight Montgomery had witnessed of another person. He had plenty of questions as to why he was here but decided those questions could wait. There was tomorrow, and Leonard just looked so peaceful, so relaxed, Montgomery would never wake him.
Montgomery stepped out of his uniform and into his own pajamas: boxer shorts and a tank top(he was hot-blooded and from Scotland, it was lucky he was wearing anything at all) and found himself next to Leonard. As if the doctor could sense his presence, he moved closer until his head rested on the engineer's, and a hand moved across his chest.
Montgomery smiled to himself in the dark.
