Sitting her glasses on the desk, Jack rubbed her temples with her fingers. Even the thought of it being Friday was not lifting her mood. She was tired. The week had been hectic, and the work kept piling up. There were no plans for the weekend, and she was imaging how little she was going to do when there was a knock at her door and Gibbs poked his head around the door.

“Y’ok, Jack? He enquired.

She smiled. If anyone could make her smile when she was feeling like this, it was him.

“Hey. I’m good. Just in need of a weekend off. How about you?”

He shrugged. “Yeah, about the same. Was gonna go to the cabin tomorrow if you wanted to come?”

Her ears pricked up immediately at mention if Gibbs’ illusive cabin – how she’s often wondered what it would be like to be there, alone with Gibbs. Her curiosity answered for her.

“That would be great. Anything you want me to bring?”

“Just the basics,” he said before walking away, leaving Jack with lots of unanswered questions but a huge grin on her face.

The next morning, they met at the diner, always best to start the day with a good breakfast, and afterwards they got into Gibbs’ truck and drove off. Jack could feel the stresses od the week easing as they left the urban sprawl of DC and out into the country. They arrived at the cabin quicker that she thought they would, but then Gibbs would never want to be too far from his beloved job. In a way, it was perfect, close, but not too close to civilisation and remote enough to not see another person for the duration of your visit.

The cabin interior was sparse, but that was no surprise considering the man it belonged to. She noted the care that had gone into the fixtures and fitting, and she imagined Gibbs spending his time, crafting it all.

“Wanna go fishing?” his voice snapped her from her ponderings.

“Sure,” She smiled, following Gibbs as he walked to the lake and went straight to the boat.

Of course, there was a boat!

He rowed them out to the centre and set up and handed Jack a rod. They cast off and they sat, silently, watching the water for any signs of activity. Jack could barely remember feeling so relaxed. She was mentally as far away as she could possibly be from work.

Alright there, Jack? You’ve not said much.”

She took a moment to consider the irony of Gibbs calling Jack out for not speaking. The man had also not uttered a word since they got on the boat.

It’s so quiet here, guess I didn’t want to ruin the ambience.

“It’s good for thinking. Or even, not thinking if that’s what you need.” He considered.

“So, which one are you doing,” she enquired.

“Thinking.”

“About?”

There was a pause. She considered she may not get an answer to this question.

“How good this is. Just me and you. No work, no prying eyes.”

There had been a lot of speculation into their relationship. She had been telling the truth about them being nothing more than friends (no one dare ask him, because… well he was Gibbs). Jack felt an affinity for the Marine, she felt safe around him but with a longing for there to be more. He understood her more than anyone else she had ever met, but not enough to consider that they could be more than just friends.

“It is. Thank you for inviting me.”

Once back at the cabin, they lit a fire and cooked their catch. When they’d finished, Jack got a bottle of bourbon out of her bag.

“Seemed rude not to bring something to keep us warm,”

The Marine smiled and held out his tin cup. The pair stayed outside keeping warm by the fire until Jack hinted, she was sleepy.

“I’ll take the floor,” he announced as they got back into the cabin,”

“We could share?” she suggested.

“It’s a small bunk. We’d both be crippled by morning.”

“Then we’ll share the floor. I’ve slept in worse places.”

Jack wondered how this idea would go down with him. She knew she wanted him close by, but the question was, would he want to be that close. It was taking them in to dangerous territory.

“Ok,” he shrugged, laying the mats, blankets and pillows on the floor.

She quickly got herself ready and got under the blankets and soon Gibbs joined her. There was a tension in the air as they both willed sleep on themselves
