“Peter,” she says, so quiet it’s barely a breath, “Why are we here?”
“I told you. I wanted to see you. Catch up.”
He still does that twitch of his nose when he lies. It’s a behaviour she’ll never unlearn, a useless piece of information that lives in the sealed off part of her heart, locked away no matter how much the door rattles and shakes.
“It’s been years since we last saw each other. Why now?”
Peter shrugs like it’ll take the weight out of his words. “I guess today is just a day when I missed you to the point of temporary insanity.”
