Work Text:
He's sitting on his bed in the dark, the only thing illuminating the room is the light that his laptop screen gives off. His clock reads twelve fifty, ten minutes before the usual time he gets a Skype call from his long-distance significant other. It's been six, nearly seven months since Makishima left Japan to go to England, helping out his brother with his business in fashion. A few days of each week in each month, they'd do Skype calls. Sure Toudou had to stay up all day until one in the morning just to hear Makishima, but all the water he drinks and how much sleep he gets the days where he and his boyfriend don't do calls keeps his appearance as perfect as ever.
He has purple headphones, plugged into the laptop, the headband resting atop his head instead of his usual fashionable headbands. Music is coming through the headphones, too; up-beat and catchy to keep him more awake. He's gotten more used to being up this late after the middle of the second month the two did their Skype calls, but before he was usually dozing off and was woken up to the tone the messenger had for when a call was coming in.
The twelve and the fifty-nine on the clock his laptop provided changed into a one and double zeros, and Toudou jumps a little when the tone goes through his ears. It's loud and he winces, pulling the headphones off for a moment as he lowers the volume. Sure he and Makishima have been doing these calls for months now, but he's still slow and nervous when it comes to answering the call. When he does, he notices his boyfriend has his video camera up and running.
“Ah, hold on,” Toudou speaks into the microphone on his headphones, grabbing his camera from the floor where he set it. It only took a few seconds for him to hook it up, too, and soon, Makishima's graced with his presence. “There you go, Maki-chan!”
“..Are those.. glasses?”
Toudou hums in question, blinking as he looks down, where a pair of glasses were folded and hooked on the collar of his shirt. His cheeks heat up a little and he laughs nervously.
“Yes, they are. My sight started to get bad so I.. got a pair of glasses.”
“Huh,” Makishima says, going quiet for a moment. “Put them on.”
Toudou blinks a second time, “Maki-chan, I don't think I need them right now.”
Makishima lets out an audible sigh, “Jinpachi, if your eyesight continues to worsen because of our calls, I'm going to punch myself in the gut. We've been in this romantic relationship of hours for a few months now; I have to try to care at least.”
Toudou's mouth parts in surprise at that, his cheeks grow a bit warmer of Makishima being caring. A smile goes across his lips, however small, it's noticeable. He lets out a small breath, grabbing onto the spectacles on the collar of his shirt, unfolding the temples and closing his eyes before sliding them on his face. They rest on the bridge of his nose and on his ears, and they are plain, nothing to fancy or colourful to make his usual ten out of ten appearance lower. He opens his eyes again, seeing Makishima staring at him with wide eyes.
“They.. aren't permanent, you know.”
“That's a shame.”
Toudou can feel the heat spreading to his ears and his mouth opens, but no words come out from it. He's quiet for a minute, but he feels like screaming a 'what'. But he can't or he'll end up waking up his parents or his older sister and he can't risk being caught being up so late. So he brings a pillow to his face, being careful of the spectacles as he covers his face.
“Jinpachi?” Makishima calls out, Toudou's first name going through his ears making him whine a little. At this, Makishima smirks a little. Even with his microphone going up against the pillow, he was still able to hear the noise that emitted from the other male. “You alright over there? All I did was say that it was a shame your glasses weren't-”
“I know what you said, Maki-chan.. I just.. I just didn't expect it.” Toudou interrupts, bringing his face up from his pillow and placing it aside so he can fix the glasses on his face. “Why did you say that?”
“You look good in them.”
Another whine comes from Toudou and he brings his hands to his heated cheeks. He's not used to this coming from Makishima honestly. He's usually the one giving compliments and making Makishima speechless. Now it's the other way around and Toudou just wants to cover his face.
“I'm never wearing these again.”
“If you ask me, it makes your usual ten a fifteen at most, sho.” Makishima tells him, trying to make it so his boyfriend keeps them. “Anyway, Ren needs me. I figured you'd want to see my face again but.. it was more special for me than it was for you, huh?”
“No no. It was special for me too. More embarrassing though..”
“You rubbed off on me, Jinpachi. What can I say? I'll talk to you later on this week, alright? Get some sleep.”
Toudou nods and they say their good nights – 'have a good day' for Makishima from Toudou though – and love you's before the call ends. When Makishima signs off, Toudou shuts off his laptop and sets everything to the side; his laptop, camera, and headphones, glasses going on his night table. But instead of sleeping, he's kept awake by Makishima's voice echoing in his mind, hearing that 'You look good in them' over and over again.
He ends up falling asleep whining into his pillow sooner or later.
