the many uses of a library book (or, Janus's Handy-Dandy Guide to Getting Your Boyfriend to Stop Studying and Kiss You)

Summary:

“Dear, what did you think was going to happen during our study date if not studying?” Logan asked, clearly trying not to laugh.

“I don’t know,” Janus said, pouting. “I wasn’t thinking about it, I was thinking about how pretty you are, so I just said yes without paying attention.”

Work Text:

“Are you going to read all of those?” Janus asked, setting down two fresh cups of coffee from the library cafe. He slid into the seat opposite Logan at the little table, tucked into a nook on the third floor of the university library, and poked at the tall stack of books Logan had piled in the middle of the table.

Logan raised his eyebrows. “Not in their entirety, but they all seemed relevant to the project I'm working on, so I took them for research purposes.” He took the coffee that Janus pushed towards him, their fingers brushing casually in the handoff. “Thank you, dear.”

“Of course.” Janus crossed his arms on the table and sprawled forward, flopping on top of them. “That sounds awfully dull, though.”

Logan looked down at him, seeming amused. “What, doing research for my project?”

“Obviously.”

“Dear, what did you think was going to happen during our study date if not studying?” Logan asked, clearly trying not to laugh.

“I don’t know,” Janus said, pouting. “I wasn’t thinking about it, I was thinking about how pretty you are, so I just said yes without paying attention.”

Logan smiled. He reached for Janus’s hand and drew it to his lips. “You are terribly charming.”

“I am,” Janus agreed, pleased. “You should kiss me about it.”

Logan raised his eyebrows and pressed another kiss to the back of Janus’s hand.

“You’re mean,” Janus accused at once. “You know that’s not what I meant!”

Logan blinked innocently at him. “I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about.”

Janus huffed and crossed his arms.

“I’ll tell you what,” Logan said. “I do need to work on this project. And I know you need to work on your essay—”

“I regret telling you that.”

“—so how about we work on those for a little while first, and then I’ll give you more attention?”

Janus narrowed his eyes, considering this. “How long is ‘a little while?’”

Logan shrugged. “Thirty minutes?”

“Fine, if you set a timer,” Janus agreed. Thirty minutes was just long enough that without a reminder that the time was up, Logan would undoubtedly become absorbed in his work.

Logan agreed to this and set the timer on his phone, placing it face-up on the table between them. Janus pulled out his own laptop and halfheartedly worked on his essay, interspersing brief bouts of writing with sipping his coffee and gazing at Logan’s face. Logan appeared fully focused on his work, a tiny furrow between his brows, his long fingers tapping absently on the tabletop, his lips ever-so-slightly pursed as he flipped back and forth between books, taking notes on his computer. He was distractingly handsome. It was really not Janus’s fault at all how little attention his essay was getting.

At long, long last, the timer went off, making Logan jump. He shut it off, smiling at the expectant look on Janus’s face. “One minute, let me wrap up.”

Janus rolled his eyes and used the time to save his work and close his laptop. True to his word, Logan was done only a minute or so later, shutting his own computer and setting the books back into their stack. He turned and gave Janus his full attention, reaching across the table and clasping both Janus’s hands in his. “So, my dear, how have you been?”

“Very bored,” Janus said at once. “But much better now.” He smiled sweetly.

Logan snickered. “I see. Did you actually work on your essay at all?”

“I did. I did!” Janus protested at Logan’s skeptical look. “A little bit!”

Logan chuckled. “I see,” he repeated.

“Oh, shut up.” Janus reached over and shoved at his shoulder. “I was doing more important things, anyway.”

“More important than your schoolwork?” Logan inquired.

“Definitely,” Janus said emphatically.

“Like what?”

“Looking at you. Thinking about kissing you. Oh, and thinking of better things to do with those books than reading them.”

Logan’s brow furrowed. “What could possibly—”

“I’m so glad you asked,” Janus interrupted, grinning mischievously. “Let me show you.” He picked up a book from the stack, flipped it open, and shifted so he was holding it in one hand. With his other hand, he caught Logan’s necktie and gently tugged him closer, until he half raised himself out of his seat and leaned forward across the table.

Janus held the book out towards the aisle of bookshelves they were seated at the end of, as if to block the view of anyone who walked past, and leaned over to meet Logan, until their faces were bare inches apart.

“Somehow, I don’t think we need the book for this,” Logan murmured, smiling.

“Oh, shut up,” Janus said, pulling him even closer by his tie.

“As you wish,” Logan said softly, his lips almost brushing against Janus’s as he spoke.

Janus closed the gap and kissed Logan, kissed him with all his focus and concentration, sighing with content as Logan kissed back just as eagerly. As far as Janus was concerned, this was a very successful study date.
