Chapter Text
The first spider-traits Peter developed was his aptly names 'spidey sense'. The first enhanced sense he developed was his super-hearing. After the initial feverishness and illness that came with the bite passed, he began to notice a change to his senses. He woke up one morning and he could hear everything. He could hear May finishing getting ready for work before leaving. He could hear the people in the apartment next to him talking about their plans for the day. He could here people waling around on the floor below, the cars and people bustling outside of his window. He clamped his hands over his ears to try and silence the noise, but it did nothing, it didn't even muffle the noises. Not knowing what to do or what was happening, Peter phoned Tony.
After only a couple of rings, Tony picked up the phone.
"Hey Underoos, you feeling any better?" Tony asked, sounding happy to be talking to Peter. Peter winced at the volume of Tony's voice- for Peter it was like he was yelling.
"I- I don't know what's happening Mr Stark. Everything's so loud, it hurt so much." Peter cried into the phone, his voice as quiet as he could but so Tony could still hear him.
"What do you mean Pete?" Tony asked softly, purposefully lowering to sound of his voice, which Peter was grateful for.
"It's like I can hear everything. I can hear everything going on outside, and May, and the people in other apartments. It's too much." Peter's hearing was so overwhelmed at this point as he almost sobbed into the phone.
"I'll be there as soon as I can kid, I've got some noise cancelling headphones you can have and I'll bring you to the Tower to try and figure this out." Tony replied gently before rushing to get to Peter's apartment. Tony still had a spare pair of the headphones from when Steve lived at the Tower, despite the many benefits of the super soldier serum, it enhanced his senses so Tony made the headphones for Steve for when things got too much.
Tony didn't even bother knocking on the apartment, simply letting himself in. When he entered Peter's bedroom, he found him curled in a ball with his hands clamped over hos ears in a desperate attempt to stifle any noise. As quietly as he could, Tony made his over to Peter; he carefully moved Peter's hands from over his ears and sat him up. He placed the headphones over Peter's ears who seemed to visibly relax.
"Thank you so much Mr Stark." Peter said, sounding almost overwhelmed as the world became so much more muted. He could only faintly hear as the headphones blocked out almost all noise.
"No problem kid, let's get you to the Tower." Tony said before putting his arm around Peter and leading him to the car where Happy was waiting. Tony sat in the back with Peter, letting him rest his head on his shoulder as Tony soothingly carded a hand through Peter's hair.
When they got to the Tower and to the med-bay, Tony got FRIDAY to scan Peter as well as having some blood samples taken. Tony stayed right by Peter's side, whos senses were still in over-drive every time he tried to remove the headphones.
"I've found something in Peter's DNA, that's- well it's not concerning but I've never seen anything like it." Helen Cho announced as she entered the room Peter and Tony were occupying.
"What do you mean? How could that not be concerning?" Tony exclaimed.
"Well the good news is that it doesn't appear to have any negative side effects, despite the irregularities. It appears that parts of Peter's DNA has become like that of a spider. From what I can tell the DNA is still mutating, so I would expect to see more changes. I suggest keeping Peter here for a few days." Helen explained.
"How did this even happen?" Tony questioned.
Peter was quiet for a few moments, trying to process the news before he remembered what had happened a few days prior, he'd been bitten by that spider at Oscorps.
"What happens now though? About my hearing?" Peter asked.
"There's nothing we can do to reverse the changes, but over time, you'll learn naturally how to filter out the different noises. In the mean time, I'm sure Tony can come up with something." Cho suggested, not being able to do much else to help Peter. So Tony did just that, he developed a special hearing aid for Peter that allowed him to filter out sound until he learned how to managed his new power. When, a few days later, Peter's eye sight did the same, Tony developed contact lenses that Peter could use his phone to adjust to filter out light to make it easier for him to see until he adjusted to his enhanced vision. It took a while to get use to his enhanced spider senses, but, with the help of Tony, he managed to.
Perhaps the most useful of the senses was Peter's sixth sense, this took several training sessions to fine tune, but would proved immensely useful. And when Peter realised that this, along with his new found super-strength, meant he could help people, he became Spider-Man, protector of New York, much to the initial horror of May and Tony. However, when Peter explained that he wanted to help people like he couldn't help Ben, they understood, with Tony even making the most advanced suit he could to keep Peter safe. Thus Spider-Man was born.
