Work Text:

Montgomery was so glad to have this vacation and shore leave away from the bridge crew. Sure, he missed the Iron Lady, but it was nice to take a break from all of the duties of being chief Engineer. He came out of the kitchen to where Leonard was in the living room, and holding two glasses of wine. He stopped when he saw Leonard pressed against the wall, peaking out the window.

"Leonard, dear, what are ye doing?" He asked sweetly, trying not to laugh.

The doctor nearly jumped. "Oh, Montgomery. Hi."

"What're ye doing," Montgomery's tried not to smile. He was most definitely amused.

"The Carollers," Leonard's eyes widened. "They're loose in the wild, walking around the neighborhood." For the holidays, they'd rented a house out in the suburbs for the few weeks they were here, and it seemed even ancient traditions followed them here.

Montgomery heard their distant singing outside, but still wasn't understanding. "What's wrong with Carollers?"

"They're so strange," Leonard shivered. "And they freak me out. Yesterday, I was followed through town."

"Okay, Grinch, calm down," Montgomery chuckled, earning a teasing glare from his partner. "Have ye ever just lsitened to the Carollers? Ahs used to love it when Ah was a kid."

"Everybody loved everything when they were a kid," Leonard argued. "I don't what it is but they're spooky and they always creep up on you. Don't you find that weird?"

"There are a lot of normal things that are actually quite weird to others," Montgomery admitted. "Ah think it's nice. They're taking the time to be out in the cold and sing for nothing. Only to spread cheer."

"Fine," Leonard sighed and opened the door.

"Let's listen to them."

Montgomery went to the door and sure enough, a chorus of people was singing. He found the old songs heartwarming, even though traditions were different in space. He'd celebrated 800 different holidays before, but nothing was quite like home.

He missed home often, but lately he noticed he hadn't yearned for home like he did before. Before he met Leonard, his true home.
