a song, written for us

Summary:

“that’s not true, and you know it,” yoongi responds, hands coming out to pull jeongguk towards him again. he kisses jeongguk’s cheek, nosing at his curls gently. “you know i want you for so much more than just that.”

“i know,” jeongguk gives in, smiling up at yoongi before pressing a kiss to the corner of his lips. “i know.”

and looking at jeongguk like that, he almost says it again.

almost.

or, four times where yoongi says, (or almost says) i love you, and the one time jeongguk says it back ♡

Notes:

written for fang ♡ love u!

Work Text:

(1)

they’re in the common room, lazing by the fireplace after a tiring day when yoongi feels it bubbling up from his lips. they’ve finished all their work for the day, and jeongguk had sneaked yoongi up to the common room so that they could spend some time together. they're talking about everything under the sky, nothing of particular importance to really stir him to attention. he allows jeongguk's soft timbre to lull him in and out of his daydreams. the colours outside the window paint the sky a pretty lilac, last dregs of the sunset casting a golden hue on jeongguk's features. jeongguk is lying in his lap, soft eyes alternating between glancing up at him and the book before him as he gestures to something the book has said. they make eye contact, and jeongguk gives him a small smile, cheeks curving prettily to reveal his sweet dimples.

there is nothing special about it, and yet, yoongi almost says it. almost

but he doesn’t. because he feels like it should be special — something grand and proudly declared. he clamps his lips tightly together before they can betray him, feeling the words push against his mouth stubbornly.

jeongguk looks at him curiously. “what’s up, hyung?” he giggles. “why do you look like you’re constipated?”

yoongi flicks jeongguk’s nose gently. “my legs are getting numb,” he lies. “and i do not look constipated , thank you very much.”

“you do,” jeongguk laughs. “your face got all screwy, and your lips were pursed like this.” he does a poor but comical impression of what yoongi looked like, and yoongi laughs, poking him in the ribs. jeongguk squirms, lifting himself off yoongi’s lap. a draft of wind blows through the crack in the windows, and he shivers.

“come back here,” he pouts. “my blanket is gone.”

“thought your legs were getting numb, hyung,” jeongguk sticks his tongue out. “i guess that’s all you want me for — only for my warmth, and not my love, or just me.” he fakes a pout, turning his big doe eyes on yoongi.

“i know.”

and looking at jeongguk like that, he almost says it again.

almost

the cheers and the tense atmosphere drag yoongi back into reality, and he looks around him. everyone around him is decked in their own house colours, and the noise is already rising in volume, each house chanting their own cheers. the game is about to start, and yet — yoongi feels unsettled. he thrusts his robe into jimin's arms, mumbling something about being back real soon.

jimin looks at him confusedly, before realisation dawns upon him. "go," he grins. "hurry!"

yoongi sprints down the stairs, rushing to where he knows he has to be. he burts into the changing rooms, where just as he expected — jeongguk sits, tightening the buckles on his boots and straightening his robe.

jeongguk looks up in surprise, mouth forming a small o , before he realises who it is. his face breaks into a smile, and yoongi goes to him, pulling jeongguk up and towards him by his robes. jeongguk follows easily, soft smile playing on his lips.

"hi," he says softly.

"hi," yoongi returns breathlessly. "i wanted to see you before you went out."

jeongguk presses his forehead against yoongi's. "my lucky charm as always, right, hyung?"

"that's all you," yoongi says. "you'll do so great, i know you will."

"mm," murmurs jeongguk. "kiss anyway?"

yoongi leans forward, brushing his lips against jeongguk's. he presses a tiny bit harder, tasting jeongguk's cherry lip balm, before pulling back. "go," he says. "i'll be cheering for you."

jeongguk chases after him, and yoongi indulges him one last time. when he pulls back, jeongguk winks. "i'll win for you, hyung. watch me bring back that trophy for you."

tapping his butt, yoong laughs. "go," he repeats, this time pushing jeongguk to the door. "be careful. i'll see you later."

jeongguk smiles, waving his way out the door. yoongi almost lets it slip past as jeongguk's figure retreats out. but jeongguk is too far away to hear him, and the moment is gone. he stares at jeongguk's back, getting tinier and tinier in the distance.

i love you, his heart sings, willing jeongguk to hear him. i do.

the light breeze lifts jeongguk's curls away from his face, running into his eyes, and yoongi reaches forward to brush them away. "your hair is getting so long," he murmurs. "ever think of cutting it?"

"maybe over the break," jeongguk replies. he doesn't seem to bothered by the length, looking far more interested in the ants that are running around on the ground next to him. he's lying in yoongi's lap again, spending the last of their free time before dinner at the great hall. yoongi plucks a stray flower from the ground, one of those weeds that grow everywhere. he's seen them on more than one occasion, and he knows jeongguk likes them. they're pretty, hyung. not many people pay attention to them because they're weeds, but i think they're special.

it reminds me of how you saw me when i didn't think i was all that special, he had told yoongi softly — almost something that couldn't be heard, a secret for himself to know and hold.

running his hands through jeongguk's hair, he threads the flower through the wavy strands. "i like it," he tells jeongguk. "it makes you look like a puppy."

jeongguk giggles, looking up at him. "if you like it, i'll keep it, hyung.”

his fingers tug on the flower, and it ends up shifting towards jeongguk's ear. the white petals contrast with its yellow middle against jeongguk's dark hair. "pretty," he mumbles, cupping jeongguk's cheek gently. "my pretty jeonggukie."

jeongguk colours a pretty pink, slight flush on his cheeks. "hyung," he protests.

"i'm just saying what's true," yoongi tells him cheekily. his heart feels full and he feels like he could fly, with how much he feels for jeongguk. "how could i lie to you?"

before jeongguk can protest any further, he leans down and kisses him, effectively shutting him up. tries to convey all that he feels through his kiss.

i love you, he means, kissing jeongguk harder. and i hope you know, how much i do.

they're on one of their various trips up the astronomy tower, when yoongi turns to jeongguk and finds that he's already looking at him. they've snuck out again, and it's close to midnight, from what he remembers seeing on the clock that they passed on their way up. jeongguk is looking at him with something almost unreadable in his eyes. his eyes are starry as they always are, shining softly even though a curtain of darkness surrounds them, stars only coming out to say hello as they twinkle shyly against the dark canvas that is the sky.

he nudges jeongguk, slipping his fingers into his, thumb gently stroking jeongguk's palm. "what is it?"

jeongguk turns away with a slight smile, shaking his head slightly. "nothing," he says quietly. unbidden,  yawn escapes him. "the stars are so pretty tonight."

"they are," yoongi agrees. "i love coming up there with you." he arranges the blanket around them, pulling it more snugly around jeongguk. "always feels a little more magical."

"you're magical," says jeongguk softly, sleepily. he squeezes yoongi's hand, leaning more into him. yoongi can tell he's on the verge of falling asleep completely, head slowly lolling onto yoongi's shoulder. "what we have is magical."

he's out like a light before yoongi can properly respond, and so he chuckles quietly, moving slightly so that jeongguk falls into a more comfortable position on his shoulder. he's still holding jeongguk's hand, and he traces jeongguk's fingers and veins gently, tangling their fingers together even more.

"it is, indeed, very magical," murmurs yoongi. and without the grandeur or build up of things, he whispers his love into the night, a song for him and him alone, against jeongguk's soft cheek pillowed onto his shoulder.

"i love you, jeonggukie," he breathes. "i have, for a long time. i promise i'll tell you, soon."

unknown to him, he doesn't see the way jeongguk's lips curve sleepily into a soft smile, as he burrows his head deeper into yoongi's shoulder, cuddling him close, as his heart whispers back of the same love held gently in between the spaces of his gentle heart.

(+ 1)

"jeongguk-ah! hurry," yoongi calls. the train is about to leave, and yet — jeongguk is nowhere to be seen. he looks around once more, and just as the conductor gives the last call, jeongguk appears by his side, flushed and out of breath.

"sorry, hyung," he grins. "i almost forgot my muggle clothes. i left them stashed in the back of my closet when i came here at the beginning of the term." he holds up a bag, stuffed to the brim. yoongi vaguely recognises one of the hoodies he's seen jeongguk in before. "i'll have to wear this at the station and on the way home," jeongguk explains. "or people will look at me weird."

"no one could look at you weird," teases yoongi. he pulls jeongguk towards one of the carriages he reserved for them, settling down onto the plush cushion. "you're too cute."

jeongguk laughs, shaking his head. "hyung, you're so cheesy."

yoongi shrugs, tugging jeongguk closer. if they're lucky, no one will disturb them for the rest of the ride and they'll be able to sneak in a few kisses here and there.

the rest of the train ride is spent laughing and talking about  the term that has gone by, reminiscing the moments that brought them joy. too soon, the train nears the familiar city of london, and the both of them begin tugging their trunks down, getting ready to exit.

on the platform, jeongguk pulls yoongi in close. "i'll miss you," he murmurs. yoongi looks up at him, placing a hand on his cheek. "i will too," he says.

"write to me, okay?" jeongguk asks, leaning in for a kiss. "and don't forget all of the dates we have planned, before we meet again to buy our supplies and stuff for next year."

"i will," yoongi promises. "i'll see you next week. it'll come by quicker than you'll know." he stretches up to kiss jeongguk once more.

"mm." jeongguk chases him when he pulls back, and yoongi laughs, pushing against his chest. "now you're just being dramatic."

"gotta have my week's worth of kisses before i see you again, hyung," jeongguk pouts.

"next week will be here before you know it," yoongi tells him. "go, your mum is probably waiting for you outside."

"alright." jeongguk catches onto yoongi's hand as they separate, kissing his knuckles gently. "goodbye, yoongi-hyung. i'll see you soon."

"bye, jeonggukie," yoongi smiles. "next week."

as jeongguk gathers his bags, he turns to yoongi once more. "oh, and hyung?"

"hmm?"

a gust of wind comes rushing through the station, and the curtains by the windows on the train dance gently to the music of the windy breeze, as jeongguk bares his heart to yoongi, answering the song that yoongi has been singing.

"i love you, too."
