Summary
Millie recognizes temptation, feels it in her thighs and the back of her throat. Sin, old Father Murray had said, is a willful abdication of moral responsibility, a deliberate turning of one's back to God. Sin, John preaches, now, is the human soul straying from its natural inclination, which is toward God, who is good. He is beautiful to watch, to listen to. She allows that spiritual love can run parallel to erotic love, and that both of these strands have gotten hopelessly tangled. She recognizes that God, who made her capable of love, is the heartbeat at the center of the mess.
Realizing these complexities does not help her one whit.
