It was true, of course. But why shouldn't he take care of himself? No-one else took care of him. His mother and father, who should have been the first to protect him, instead wanted to force him into skirts, into someone else's life, into a lunatic asylum. He said something of the sort, but the words came out jumbled and confused. He couldn't concentrate. The sounds of the forest were resolving themselves into that heartbeat: Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. He was going to die, and soon. He was going to deserve his death.
