    He would have suspected it as one of Lestat’s tricks, but Lestat, strangely enough, always appeared more plodding and mundane in his own quarters. The lamps dazzled, the full shelves of books boasted gravitas, and Lestat stood amongst them awkwardly, his shoes leaving small, human indents in the brand new rug.

    Louis wondered what it was like, to have everything brand new. A relief, in a way. In another, desperately lonely, to need to acquaint yourself with every chair, every corner, every reflection.

    I’ve drawn my own conclusions from all of this, and I invite you to do the same, because fact is:

    Since the 70s (which is the earliest police records I could find) there have been a staggering 1085 people reported missing in the area. That’s around 24 people per year, in an area that’s not nearly large enough, or in fact dangerous enough, to warrant these numbers.

    And of these 1085 missing persons, over 700 have been seen again years after they were supposed to have gone missing. None of them returned. Not one of them left the area around Camp Arcadia.

    Its streets glittered with the dust of diamonds, gleaming under the radiant light of a sun that shone brighter, purer over the hallowed lands than it ever had over Middle-earth. The peaks of the Pelori, soaring and snowcapped, loomed pristine in the distance, mocking her with every glimpse. These were not mountains that had ever known the tread of an orc's foot, nor suffered spilt blood or harrowed screams. Even the sands of Eldamar were white and silken underfoot, nothing like the abrading grit of the beaches of Belfalas where her mother had once reigned.

    Celebrían hated it.

    Dead women made good martyrs, pretty saints. Disgraced ones did not. Hard to create a burial mound for a woman who did not want to go in the earth. No Haudh-in-Elleth for Celebrían, oh no. No songs or great tales, no posthumous pardon. Just flinching, sidelong looks and condemnatory whispers and the terrible, terrible burden of life ill-deserved.

    In the normal course of things, if a lord dallied with a maid or governess, his wife would dismiss the offending servant forthwith, but the twenty years’ companionship between Peter and Bunter could not be considered in even remotely the same light. Making Peter choose between them would not only be heartless, but destructive too. Harriet had a niggling worm of worry that she might not come out on top in that contest, and even if she did, the damage to Peter and their relationship would be incalculable. That Peter had offered to sacrifice a part of his life with Bunter on her bridal altar was of course no less than correct, if conventional notions of correctness could even begin to apply, but part of her could not help wonder if it were right .

    The vampire’s other hand rises to his chest; his throat; his jaw. Caresses lightly along the bone of his chin, and then- with an imperiousness that makes Liu Qingge’s breath catch- pushes its fingers inside Liu Qingge’s mouth.

    Liu Qingge tries to make a sound of objection, but all that comes out is something egregiously close to a moan. The vampire’s long fingers dip past his teeth, stroking over his tongue and exploring the divots of his molars; the dullness of his incisors. Liu Qingge’s best attempt at biting them cleanly off is met with only a quiet tsking noise as the vampire presses his tall frame closer yet against his back; pries his jaw further open with those irresistably strong fingers.
