The Icy Incident

Summary:

After Sugiura recommends a temporary ice rink in Theater Square, Yagami and Kaito have a go on the ice. When he finally shows up hours later at the Yagami Detective Agency, Sugiura walks in on a bizarre scene.

Work Text:

It was Sugiura who told them about the ice rink, yet when Yagami and Kaito roll up at Theater Square, Sugiura is nowhere to be found.

“Little shit,” Kaito says, but he smirks and jerks his thumb towards the pop-up stall renting out ice skates. “Still, you up for this, Tak?”

Yagami sighs, glancing at the temporary ice rink. He has never seen Theater Square so busy, the ice covered with couples holding hands and children clinging to their parents’ arms to keep their balance. Every few seconds, someone crashes into the waist-high wall around the rink or faceplants the ice, and Yagami finds himself wincing at every collision.

“Tak?”

Rolling his eyes, Yagami gives Kaito a playful punch to the shoulder. “Yeah, yeah, I heard you, Kaito-san. Even though shattering my coccyx isn’t my idea of a fun afternoon, I’ll give it a try.”

“Oh, so you’re scared?” Kaito says with a shit-eating grin.

And despite genuinely having no interest in staggering around on the ice, Kaito’s smile lights a competitive fire inside Yagami’s chest. “Hell no. I just expected to get pulled over every time you fall on your ass, that’s all.”

Kaito snorts and elbows him. “Okay then. Bring it, Tak!”

And just as Yagami wonders if Kaito wants them to have a brawl, Kaito races over to the stall, tugging his wallet out of his pocket. The teenage boy behind the counter jumps and Yagami shakes his head, wondering if Kaito will ever stop scaring people by just existing in public.

(Although, considering how he still dresses like a yakuza and challenges random people to fights, Yagami doesn’t hold out much hope.)

Long after the sun has set, Sugiura springs across the huge gap between buildings and lands carefully on the roof of the Yagami Detective Agency. With nobody around, he pulls off his mask and shoves it into his pocket, and tries the roof access door. Finding it unlocked, he jogs down the stairs, already able to hear music on the record player, and opens the office door without knocking. And… And then Sugiura just stares at the sight before him.

With his pants and shoes on the floor, his green boxers on display, Kaito lies on his stomach on the couch. He props himself up on one arm, his free hand holding a can of beer that Kaito struggles to drink at such a weird angle, judging by the amount of liquid dribbling down the side of the can. Strangest of all, Kaito has something rectangular shoved down the back of his boxers, the outline of the object visible through his shirt and underwear. Oh, and Yagami sits on the edge of his desk, holding a beer and grinning like he can barely keep himself from laughing.

Yagami stops laughing when he spots Sugiura, instead smirking and saying, “Nice of you to finally join us, Sugiura-kun.”

Kaito flinches, his can slipping through his fingers and clattering to the floor (behind him, Yagami picks it up and rests it on the table) in his haste to turn his head. As his twists his torso, a hiss of pain escapes him, and Kaito meets Sugiura’s eyes with a grimace contorting his face. Breaking eye contact immediately, a hilarious flush patterns Kaito’s cheeks and he turns back to Yagami. “Why the fuck didn’t you lock the door, Tak? I didn’t want him to see me like this.”

“It’s nothing he hasn’t seen before, Kaito-san,” Yagami says and Kaito blushes harder (and Sugiura finds himself grateful for his mask making his face so hot during his journey here, otherwise he might blush too).

“Is this a bad time?” Sugiura asks, crossing the room and turning his back to Kaito.

“No, we’re fine,” Kaito says a little too quickly. “Just having some drinks, right, Tak?”

Yagami smirks, taking a long sip of his beer. “Yeah, we’re having some drinks. I mean, you’re also half-naked on my couch with an ice pack jammed down your boxers, but, sure, we’re having drinks.”

As Kaito yells at Yagami, Sugiura processes the incredibly sarcastic reveal Yagami just gave him. So Kaito injured his lower back or ass somehow, but the injury is mild enough for Yagami to feel comfortable teasing Kaito about it. Although, that doesn’t explain Kaito’s embarrassment; with how often he gets injured, seeing Kaito so humiliated is rather odd. The injury must be from something other than street fights. But what does that leave?

“Can I ask something?” Sugiura asks, barely raising his voice despite the spat of bickering. To his amusement, they both shut up the moment he speaks; it happens a lot, but Sugiura never gets used to how easily he can boss his boyfriends around. His back still to Kaito, Sugiura tilts his head in that direction and says to Yagami, “He’s injured, right? What happened?”

Before Yagami can open his mouth, Kaito yells out, “Don’t you fucking dare, Tak!”

Yagami sighs, but his smirk broadens. “Oh, don’t be like that, Kaito-san. He won’t think less of you for falling on your ass ice ska—”

“Tak!” Kaito bellows and an object soars over Sugiura’s shoulder, right past his ear, heading for Yagami’s face.

But it doesn’t hit him. With such little effort it becomes hilarious, Yagami’s reflexes save him once again, his hand flying up to catch a blue rectangle—the ice pack, probably.

“Did you lose this?” Yagami says.

He goes to say something else, but he freezes.

Because Sugiura bursts into hysterical laughter. He doesn’t mean to (he’s never been one for loud noises and drawing attention to his unmasked self—the reason he bailed on the trip to the ice rink), but Sugiura finds himself picturing the incident. And the thought of Kaito staggering on the ice before collapsing hard onto his ass leaves Sugiura unable to do anything but laugh.

Over his giggles, Sugiura hears Kaito sigh and mutter, “Well… I guess it was kinda funny, huh?”

Yagami finally gives in to his barely-suppressed laughter, chuckling as he returns the ice pack to Kaito, who begins to laugh and groan in equal measure.

But even through his laughter, Sugiura finds himself glad he skipped out on skating—and with Kaito out of action for a while, at least they’ll get to spend more time together.
