Work Text:

It's a bright sunny morning when Oikawa wakes up, his alarm ringing beside him. He stays snuggled up in the blankets before the sound of the alarm becomes too much to bear. He sits up and yawns, patting the spot next to him only to find it cold and empty. Oikawa only sighs and smiles.

"Right, he left early. Well, that gives me more time to prepare."

Oikawa grabs his phone and sure enough, there's a reminder that today is Kageyama's birthday. He stretches like a cat with his arms above his head before going to the bathroom to wash up. Like he does every single day, Oikawa fixes his hair as he brushes his teeth and he tidies up the counter, a matching set for nearly everything. He was a romantic like that. But Kageyama didn't seem to mind so he kept buying coupley things.

With water still dripping from the ends of his hair, Oikawa opens the closet and chooses his outfit of the day. Kageyama has always asked him why he takes so long just to get dressed ever since they moved in together.

" Fashion, baby ." Oikawa would always reply and there would be this adorable frown on Kageyama's face every time he did so. Kageyama's side of the closet looked untouched but Oikawa knew it was just the ravenette's tendency of just choosing whatever his eyes fell on first, which Oikawa had tried to fix but to no avail.

Grabbing his phone, Oikawa makes a beeline toward the kitchen, preparing his breakfast for the day. The apartment is peacefully quiet and as Oikawa is cooking, he notices Kageyama's set of keys still resting on the kitchen counter.

"So forgetful, Tobio-chan."

Oikawa mumbles, but decides to leave it where it is, focusing on his own meal. While he eats, he thinks of what to give Kageyama as a birthday present. Oikawa remembers making curry the year before last year and fell even more in love as Kageyama ate it with hearts in his eyes. He smiles as he reminisces and drums his fingers against the table before lighting up like a light bulb.

"Flowers sound nice. And a cake, too. Ah, but I forgot what kind he likes. Shou-chan should know, probably."

Picking up his phone, Oikawa takes a moment to admire his lockscreen. It was a selfie he and Kageyama had taken last summer when they went to Argentina together as a vacation. He couldn't help but smile back at Kageyama's best attempt at one, his hand raised awkwardly in a v. Snapping out of it, Oikawa calls Hinata, chewing his last bit of his breakfast as he waits for the man to pick up.

" Great King? "

Oikawa perks up at Hinata’s voice on the other side of the call and swallows his food down before he replies.

"Shou-chan! How've you been?"

" I'm...what are you calling me for? "

"It's Tobio-chan's birthday! I'm planning to get flowers and a cake for him but I forgot what he likes so now I'm asking you! You know, right?"

There's a small moment of silence before Hinata’s voice rings in Oikawa's ears again.

" Are you okay, Oikawa-san? Kageyama's -"

"Of course I'm okay, Shou-chan!" Oikawa laughs, the sound rumbling in his chest. "What gave you the idea that I'm not? Now, answer my question, I don't want Tobio-chan to know."

"... Try forget-me-nots or something and as for cake, he'll probably appreciate anything you get him ."

Hinata’s voice sounds tired but Oikawa beams at his answer, feet already itching to get outside to buy the items.

"Thanks, Shou-chan! I'll take you out to dinner sometime!"

"You’re welcome but Oikawa-san, are you really okay? Should I call Iwai-"

Oikawa hangs up before Hinata can finish and he immediately jumps out of his seat, washing his plate and grabbing his coat before leaving the apartment. Despite the glaring sun, Tokyo is freezing cold and Oikawa is glad he decided to wear his fluffy coat that Kageyama had bought him for his birthday last year. He can see all sorts of Christmas decorations everywhere and reminds himself to buy a wreath so he can hang it on the door. He stores the thought in the back of his head and stuffs his hands into his pockets as he walks towards the nearest floral shop.

The windchime above the door chimes as Oikawa pushes open the door, his nose being met with the pleasant smell of fresh flowers. The woman at the cashier greets him when he nears the counter.

“Welcome. What can I do for you today, sir?”

“I’d like a small bouquet of forget-me-nots, please.”

Oikawa says with a gentle smile and the woman nods, scurrying off to arrange the bouquet for him. She comes back soon enough and she passes him the forget-me-nots tied together with a simple string. As he’s paying, her voice interrupts the silence.

“If you don’t mind me asking, who are the flowers for?”

“It’s my fiance’s birthday today and apparently these flowers are the ones he likes, so I got it for him.”

The woman glances towards his left hand, the silver band around his ring finger gleaming back at her, and she seems to swoon, a huge smile on her face.

“That’s really sweet of you. I’m sure he’ll love them. Have a nice day!”

She waves as Oikawa leaves the shop, the man waving back at her. With the flowers in his hand, he makes his way to the bakery, picking out a small vanilla cake with a good amount of cream, making sure to also grab a chocolate birthday plaque. Oikawa hums underneath his breath, letting his feet take him to the place he needed to go. He can feel his phone buzz in his pocket, probably Iwaizumi messaging him, but he ignores it, admiring the nice weather as he arrives at his destination.

As always, Kageyama is waiting for him and he clutches the flowers and cake tighter in his hands, a slight skip in his step. Oikawa is glad it isn’t a snowy day today so he doesn’t have to brush snow off of his fiance. He settles down on the stone floor in front of Kageyama, setting the items he bought on his lap.

“Did you wait long, Tobio-chan? I bought some flowers and cake for you, with the help of Shou-chan. Happy birthday, my love.”

Oikawa receives no reply but he doesn’t expect one. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees the card he had left last year still standing on the marble slab and Oikawa reaches out to grab it. He brushes off some dust and slips it in his pocket. Oikawa places the bouquet of flowers on top of marble and starts to open up the cake, sliding the chocolate plaque into the cake. He holds it in his hands and faces it towards Kageyama, letting the man see the decorations on the cake.

His voice echoes in the breeze as he sings Happy Birthday, lips curving into a smile as Kageyama’s blue eyes pierce into his own. Oikawa’s voice trails off as he finishes the song and he sets the cake down.

“I miss you, darling.”
