"Are you sure you want to go to the Last Drop?" Caitlyn asked, an edge of caution in her voice. Vi's hand had slipped out of their hand holding gentle morning stroll as the neon sign of the bar and restaurant got closer. Her pace had picked up and her shoulders were squared and she was walking with a cocky strut that Caitlyn knew all too well what it preceded.
"Why? What's wrong with the Last Drop?" Vi asked, looking over her shoulder casually.
"It's just that..." Caitlyn trailed off, searching for the best way to phrase this. "You seem to not get along with the head chef."
"Sevika?" Vi asked, giving a forced laugh as her steps hurried.
Caitlyn hadn't even known her name. "Yes, her."
"Nah, it's fine. We're fine," Vi dismissed. They had reached the door now and it was too late to head back. Caitlyn only hoped that Sevika was out today so that she could have a normal breakfast with Vi. Every time they came here, it didn't go so well.
Vi pulled open the door, allowing Caitlyn in. The place was empty at this time, most of Zaun's population opting to get up much later in the day. There were only a few customers at the tables and two at the bar. And standing right behind the counter, manning the grill, was Sevika. She was a tall woman, built more like a fighter than a chef. Vander had hired her a couple years back to help around the place when it got more popular. Despite Vi being Vander's daughter, and Vander being beloved by everyone which as a result made Vi beloved by everyone, Sevika seemed to be the exception.
Though at this point it was hard to tell who had started the animosity.
Vi strode up to the counter, stopping at the woman taking the order. Her fists were curled up and there was a hard edge to her voice. "I'll take two orders of scrambled eggs and a side of bacon and hashbrowns. Two coffees, one black and one with two spoons of sugar." Vi paid, all the while her gaze never left Sevika's back as the woman pushed sizzling meat around.
All paid, Vi and Caitlyn sat down at one of the booths. They needed to have a proper talk about this whole situation, but it seemed Vi herself could not recognize it. "Vi, can we talk for a moment?" Caitlyn asked.
"Of course," Vi assured, eyes watching the head chef.
"Vi!" Caitlyn reprimanded and this time Vi looked over at her. Caitlyn gave a heavy sigh. "Look, I know you like this place, and I know your father owns it, but maybe it's not such a good idea for you to be here."
"What do you mean?" Vi asked, taking a sip of the complimentary water the waitress had dropped off at their table.
"You always seem to get into arguments with Sevika."
"No, we just have-"
"Vi, I need you to stop denying that you do. I've had to help you out of this place, more than once, with you bleeding or bruised. All because you and Sevika couldn't keep your hands to yourself," Caitlyn said, stabbing her finger onto the wood with emphasis.
"She fucking starts them!" Vi expressed. "I wouldn't have to finish them if she didn't!"
"Vi you don't have to prove anything to her. Why don't you just try and talk to her like a normal person?"
Before Caitlyn could continue, the waitress came over with their food. Caitlyn's meal was exactly like how it had been ordered. Meanwhile, Vi had a plate full of soggy hashbrowns, burnt bacon, and two raw eggs. Vi slammed her hands down on the table top, before rising up to her full height, grabbing one of the eggs and pegging Sevika across the restaurant. The eggshell cracked on her head and Sevika turned around with a vicious snarl.
"I asked for scrambled eggs," Vi spat, glaring her down.
"We don't have anymore."
"Then why the fuck does Caitlyn have some?" Vi jerked a hand in the direction of Caitlyn's plate.
"We ran the fuck out," Sevika insisted, arms crossed over her chest.
"I'll run you the fuck out!" Vi promised. She charged across the room, Sevika hopping over the counter to meet her. All the customers turned to look as Sevika's metal arm caught Vi right in the gut. Spittle went flying out of Vi's mouth and she went crashing into the jukebox machine. She didn't stay down for long, charging right back at Sevika and this time dodging her blow, and punching her in the jaw. Sevika's head went careening to the right and she smashed into one of the nearby tables, breaking it.
Caitlyn sighed tiredly and propped her head up on her arm, before forking some food into her mouth as objects went flying overhead.
At least breakfast here tasted good.
