Natasha crossed her arms defensively. "I'm a lone wolf."
Maria leaned past Natasha to peer through the doorway to their overcrowded living room then leaned back and raised an eyebrow.
"It's complicated!"
"Hey, if you two are going to stand in the hallway and pretend not to argue for a while, can we order pizza?" Yelena called from her spot on the floor where she was dragging a piece of string for Liho to chase.
Natasha looked up at the ceiling as if praying for patience. "We are not arguing, we're discussing the current situation."
"Yeah, but the current situation is that you didn't tell your girlfriend about your family and while we're used to you and your emotional repression issues, she looks like she may need a moment. So can we order pizza?"
Many hours later, after a lot of pizza, conversation, and vodka, they finally had some time alone together. Maria never realized how much she loved the usual quiet of their apartment until she was experiencing it in the wake of Natasha's family.
She leaned back against Nat on the couch and brought her hands up to grip the arm that wrapped around her before turning her head to make eye contact. "For the record, I am used to you and your 'emotional repression issues' but next time, a little heads up would be nice."
"I really didn't think they would just show up like that." Natasha looked chagrined.
"Well, now we know." She sighed and surveyed the scattered bottles and pizza boxes. "I suppose it could be worse."
Natasha kissed the side of her head before sliding her arm free and getting up to start gathering debris. "Yeah, Yelena could have stolen my stash of ammo instead of yours."
"She what?!"
