Cas stopped at Frankie’s feet. His face was staid and mechanical, just like it was back when he was mostly angel. But inside, he was the same friend who had cared so deeply about this girl that it proved to be his demise.
He reached out his hand and took her only one in it, linking their fingers together. He placed his other hand on top of them. “I once made a vow to protect you. And I broke that vow.”
Sam, Dean, and Ellen quietly approached the two, but they kept their distance.
“I owe you no debt. My failure has freed you of that. It is clear to me that my involvement in your life was the genesis of your end. I led you down this path. I filled your mind with hope of a purpose, of a course to a resolve you weren’t even searching for. If I hadn’t been in your life, it wouldn’t have ended so horrifically.”
Dean’s jaw clenched, Sam’s head lowered, and Ellen rubbed her hand on Sam’s back.
“It is for this, Frankie, that I will make you another promise. And this oath I assert that I will keep.” Cas clenched his hands tighter around her own. “I will give you the life you should have had. A life with your brothers. A life with no Apocalypse. You can make whatever you wish of yourself.” He released his topmost hand and formed three fingers. “And I will stay away. Forever.”
The moment he touched Frankie’s forehead, Castiel disappeared. There was barely a trace of him being there, if not for the bloody footprints next to Frankie’s body.
Sam, Dean, and Ellen stood in silence, waiting with bated breath for something – anything – to happen.
And then it did.
Frankie’s chest rose and fell.
