It's Earth-1 and It's Christmas Eve

Summary:

A brief look at the Bat Family before Crisis on Infinite Earths, when Jason Todd was a circus orphan and his mother was a reformed thief who lived in the night.

Notes:

A second prompt for Oifaaa who chose "Christmas Eve" and Jason Todd

Work Text:

If the Bat had his way, he would’ve been out on the streets searching for more criminals to capture.

But she wouldn’t hear of it.

She made sure not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

She made sure the stockings were hung by the chimney with care.

And she made sure he was sound asleep to awaken the next morning to see what Saint Nicholas had brought.

Well, maybe not Saint Nicholas.

Natalia Knight, a.k.a. Nocturna, was new to the role of motherhood. Just as she was new to firmly (well semi-firmly) being on the side of justice.

As befitting her name, she was not a morning person as she walked about the house keeping vigil for anyone unwanted guests who did NOT have snowy white beards and rosy, red cheeks.
Nocturna would not allow anyone to disrupt her son’s hard-earned rest.

Asleep on the couch was young Jason, and while he slept Nocturna carefully placed gift after gift under the tree they had decorated days before. Some were signed from her, others from “Santa,” and some from-

“Bruce.”

She knew he was in the room without even looking up. They’d gotten used to each other.

“You’re up late.”

Was that a joke?

“Last minute preparations,” she answered in a low voice. “Please don’t wake him.”

“Of course not.”

As she stood, the pale-skinned queen of the night turned towards the dark avenger and said “I didn’t think you’d be back so soon.”

“Last minute shopping.”

She watched as Bruce revealed from his cape a large box wrapped in red and green.

“We’re certainly spoiling him,” Nocturna softly laughed. “I’m glad. He deserves to be spoiled.”

Bruce placed the present under the tree before he joined Nocturna by her side.

The two of them watched as Jason slept on, so peacefully and soundly.

That the two lovers had each other was a joy, but knowing they had such a wonderful child to call their son made it even more wonderful.

They were an odd family, a dark knight, a boy wonder, a thief of the dusk. But they were a family.

And nothing would ever change that.
