Mr. Jones

Summary:

A storyboard for Mega Man Recut that focuses on Proto and Elec Man's relationship throughout the years.

Notes:

The song is Mr. Jones by Counting Crows (This song may or may not be a part of my agenda to convince people that a song from my childhood can be read in a gay interpretation)

Work Text:

Part 1: (Instrumental) Shalalala la la la. Uh huh

(The scene starts by panning through a bar, eventually settling on Elec man, who's dressed as a human. He's sitting alone at the counter stool, an untouched drink in front of him)

Part 2: I was down at the New Amsterdam

(Elec man seems to be looking around the bar, his eyes moving around they stop at something)

Part 3: Staring at this yellow-haired girl

(The shot switches to Elec man's POV, as he's looking at a shady man, who is looking around suspiciously. He's also accompanied by a young woman, seemingly his daughter, who seems blissfully unaware of the shadiness of the man she's with)

Part 4: Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation with a black-haired flamenco dancer

(Proto man approaches the group and starts chatting with them. The man seems suspicious of him, but the young woman looks interested. There's a sense that Proto is buttering the two up)

Part 5: You know she dances while her father plays guitar, she's suddenly beautiful

(The young woman starts to show off a dance, which Proto pretends to be impressed by. The older man seems to relax somewhat more)

Part 6: And we all want something beautiful

(The shot cuts to show only Proto, cutting the two humans out of the shot)

Part 7: Man, I wish I was beautiful

(The shot returns to Elec man, who continues to watch the interaction, before turning away to face towards the bar counter again, and closing his eyes. The shot turns black)

Part 8: So come dance this silence down through the morning

(The shot changes to a flashback, showing the first time Elec man and Proto man fought each other, with Elec man easily taking Proto down by surprise)

Part 9: Shalalala la la la, yeah

(As an electrical current begins to form around Elec man's arm, Proto suddenly grabs his arm, draining his power. The shot suddenly turns black, as if there was a power outage)

Part 10: Uh huh, yeah

(A few bolts of electrical dance around Elec man, lighting the shot again, showing Elec man is at Dr. Wily's lab, looking resentfully at Wily and Proto as he's officially reactivated and forced to demonstrate his power)

Part 11: Cut up Maria

(Elec man is suddenly taken out of his flashback with a startle as Proto sits next to him at the bar counter stool)

Part 12: Show me some of those Spanish dances

(Proto man discretely shows Elec man something he stole from the man, a card that is the key to something valuable. Elec man nods, and starts to get up to leave)

Part 13: And pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones

(Just as he's getting up, Proto passes him a can of what looks to be beer. Proto has his own can, and doesn't seem interested in going anywhere)

Part 14: Believe in me, help me believe in anything

(Elec man sits down, looking exasperated, and gestures to the can with a raised eyebrow, clearly wondering what he's supposed to do with it. Proto man peels back a layer on his own can, revealing it's just an E-Tank that's been disguised. He looks a little too proud of this trick)

Part 15: 'Cause I want to be someone who believes, yeah

(Elec man looks surprised for a moment, before just sighing with exasperation, although he's smiling somewhat as he sits down. The shot of the two zooms out gradually, fading as it gets further away, until the shot turns black)

Part 16: Mr. Jones and me tell each other fairy tales

(The shot cuts to when Elec man and Proto man are going to threaten Skylar in Mega Pinocchio , right after they are mistaken for interns. Elec man is scolding Proto for his outfit, which Proto brushes off, rolling his eyes)

Part 17: And we stare at the beautiful women

(Elec man and Skylar are staring each other down, coldly. Near the end of this shot, Proto slightly moves, transitioning to his actions during the next shot)

Part 18: 'She's looking at you? Ah, no, no, she's looking at me'

(Proto says this line sarcastically, clearly not taking this situation seriously, to the disdain of Elec and Skylar. He draws a gun and aims, with the camera facing towards the gun so that when Proto lazily shoots it, the screen obscured with white)

Part 19: Smiling in the bright lights, coming through in stereo

(The shot cuts to Elec man and Proto leaving, the skyscraper Skylar owns in the background. Elec man is obviously displeased with how things went down, and with Proto's flippant attitude. He glares at Proto as Proto walks forward, completely carefree)

Part 20: When everybody loves you, you can never be lonely

(As they're about to round a corner, Elec man sees a brief news report about Mega man from a TV that's on sale at a shop. For a very brief moment he slows, his expression unreadable, before rounding the corner, to which the shot fades to dark)

Part 22: Well I'm gonna paint my picture

(The shot cuts to show Elec man and Proto at Skull Fortress, both looking at each other with dislike)

Part 23: Paint myself in blue, red, black, and gray

(The shot cuts to show Elec man as he's almost powered down because of water damage. Proto helps by having Elec man lean against him, something Elec man doesn't seem to know how to feel about)

Part 24: All of the beautiful colors are very, very meaningful

(As Elec man is on the verge of powering down in Proto's jet, he catches Proto man briefly looking over at him, concerned. The shot fades to white)

Part 25: Yeah, well, you know gray is my favorite color

(The next shot shows Proto giving Elec man circuits that protect him from potentially lethal water damage. The two seem to have an uneasy sense of truce)

Part 26: I felt so symbolic yesterday

(The shot cuts to show Elec man when he fell into the sewer. He's obviously disgusted, but stares at where the circuits Proto gave him are, seemingly surprised and somewhat emotionally conflicted)

Part 27: If I knew Picasso, I'd buy myself a gray guitar and play

(The next shot shows Elec man standing near a large window as the Badlands are flooding. Although he's still afraid of water, he gradually is able to place his hand to the glass. He smiles softly to himself)

Part 28: Mr. Jones and me look into the future

(The shot returns to Proto and Elec man at the bar, talking about something. Elec man's put his drink on the table, but Proto still has his in his hand)

Part 29: Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women

(The man Proto pickpocketed earlier begins to angrily approach them, catching both of their attention. He's yelling, having noticed the loss of his card. His daughter is behind him looking embarrassed, and although people are starting to pay attention, neither Proto or Elec man seems particularly nervous. Proto smirks)

Part 30: 'She's looking at you? I don't think so she's looking at me'

(Proto says this line as he holds up his drink as if about to take a sip, but quickly tossing the can at the man, which startles him)

Part 31: Standing in the spotlight, a bought myself a gray guitar

(Proto remains sitting, continuing to look smugly unbothered as the now drenched man gets even more aggressive towards him. As everyone is paying attention to the confrontation, Elec man sneaks away from his seat)

Part 32: When everybody loves me, I will never be lonely

(Elec man approaches the light switches. With a quick glance back at Proto, as if checking to make sure he hasn't made the situation worse, Elec man discretely sends a jolt of light through the light switches, which overpowers the electricity system, shutting the lights down. Right before the lights go out, Proto darts away from his seat, taking advantage of everyone's surprise to head towards Elec man)

Part 33: I'll never be lonely

(When the darkness fades, Elec man is shown looking at Proto man, who has just returned from being jumped by the syndicate. Elec man mostly seems exasperated, although there's a hint of concern in his expression)

Part 34: Said I'm never gonna be lonely

(The shot cuts to show Elec man threatening Proto not to sneak off on his own until he's been repaired, which Proto seems annoyed by. As Proto leaves, Elec man furrows his brows somewhat, as if worried but not entirely sure how to express it)

Part 35: I wanna be a lion

(Elec man stares Top man down coldly, while Top man looks sad but frustrated)

Part 36: Yeah, everybody wants to pass as cats

(Proto man confronts Elec man on his behavior towards Top man, pointing out that Top man's story indicates there's probably something deeply wrong happening within the syndicate. Elec man looks annoyed, but Proto's words resonate with him)

Part 37: We all wanna be big, big stars, yeah

(The shot cuts to Elec man and Proto fighting against the syndicate over Brain Bot. Elec man notices Magic man preparing an unknown attack with on of his cards)

Part 38: But we got different reasons for that

(As the card shoots towards Proto, Elec man swiftly pushes him out of the way, taking the hit instead. The shot turns black)

Part 39: Believe in me

(The shot cuts to Proto and Elec man as they leave the bar, running into the night)

Part 40: 'Cause I don't believe in anything

(Elec man has been looking backward as they're running, making sure they haven't been followed, but because of this he starts to trip. He's about to fall into a puddle, and he braces himself for impact)

Part 41: And I, I want to be someone to believe

(Proto man grabs Elec man by the shoulder, helping him back up and dragging him into a run, gradually letting him go as Elec man is able to pick up his pace again)

Part 42: To believe, to believe, yeah

(Proto grins at Elec man, who softly smiles back before the two run out of frame. The screen turns black)

Part 43: Mr. Jones and me, stumbling through the barrio

(In the next shot, Elec man and Proto walk through a cave with Dr. Cossack during the Red Gulch episode. Proto looks relaxed but Elec man looks at Dr. Cossack with resentment)

Part 44: Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women

(Dr. Cossack is shown talking to Proto man, looking annoyed at him, but Proto just laughs)

Part 45: She's perfect for you! Man there's got to be somebody for me

(The shot zooms out to show Elec man bitterly watching them from behind the two while working on his computer. The area he is standing is shaded a little darker than where Dr. Cossack and Proto are, creating a slight divide between dark and light. Elec man sneers as he turns away from the two, moving so that his back is facing the camera)

Part 46: I want to be Bob Dylan

(The shot cuts to show Elec man attacking Tar so that Top man can rescue the Mayor)

Part 47: Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky

(Tar turns to snarl at Elec man, but quickly stops as Proto draws his blaster on him, smirking cockily)

Part 48: When everybody loves you, ah son

(The Mayor thanks Proto, seeming to see him as a hero, and Proto seems suddenly uncomfortable with the attention he's drawing from everyone)

Part 49: That's just about as funky as you can be

(As the Bad bots retreat, Proto looks more at ease next to Elec man, who is lightly scolding him for how out of control Wily's scheme has become. Proto just grins)

Part 50: Mr. Jones and me, staring at the video

(The shot cuts to show Elec man and Proto working on the jet they're working on together)

Part 51: When I look at the television I want to see me

(The shot cuts to show Wily explaining his plan for Proto to pretend to defect to the other bad bots, which Proto seems somewhat uncertain about. Elec man looks unimpressed)

Part 52: Staring right back at me

(The shot cuts to show Proto man and Elec man arguing in the security room, which ends with Elec man angry and Proto feeling unhappy and confused)

Part 53: We all want to be big stars

(The shot remains in the same location, but the outside window now depicts the sunset. Proto man approaches Elec man again, both looking somewhat awkward)

Part 54: But we don't know why and we don't know how

(Proto acknowledges how stressful this mission is been and that he knows he was being a jerk, which Elec man accepts with his own apology)

Part 55: But when everybody loves me

(Elec man confesses that he doesn't think he's good enough to be Proto's friend, with his side of the screen becoming shaded slightly darker. The darkness disappears as Proto puts his hand on Elec man's shoulder)

Part 56: I want to be just about as happy as I can be

(The shot cuts to Proto man, who says this line with a somewhat self-conscious grin. The scene begins to fade behind him into the city streets at night)

Part 57: Mr. Jones, and me

(Elec man looks briefly surprised, before smiling back, looking surprisingly reassured. The scene continues to face behind him into the city streets at night)

Part 58: We're gonna be big stars

(The shot cuts to show the outline of Proto and Elec man, looking up at the stars for a moment, before walking out of frame)
