Sonnet I (Avowal)

Summary:

Bright, loving, kind and steady nonetheless
You light my way with your delighted heart.

This ended up as a dialogue for Aziraphale and Crowley, almost like vows, for the two of them to say to each other. I've swapped it round so Crowley is in italics; it would make sense if they said the last line together. There are now some more of these: perhaps I should have made this a multi chapter work instead of a series. Sorry, I didn't plan this very well.

Work Text:

Fear, care, and Heaven’s malice may oppress
My gentle friend’s pure joy in wisdom, art -
Bright, loving, kind and steady nonetheless
You light my way with your delighted heart.

The spirit of my true and loyal friend
Is changeable as water, always new,
But this will never alter to the end
My happiness at every sight of you.

Eve ate the fruit, and knew at once the lie.
It did not kill, but told her what was true.

Time and again since then we have denied
Each other. I will no more lie to you.

Here is my hand — I take your hand in mine.
We face, as one, the Fallen and Divine.

Notes:

For some reason my first fanfic of the 21st century is a sonnet. Because I'm bloody-minded that way, apparently. Anyway, here are four quatrains and a couplet, with the right number of proper English feet, and a rhyme scheme. I had to re-use the d rhyme, and we have some change-of-grammatical-person stuff going on, but I don’t think fixing any of that will make it any better, so let's just get it out there. I would like to thank charlottemadison for the "delight" insight. I would also like to thank whoever thought I would be a good person, at the age of 14ish, to read Genesis Chapter 3 verses 1-7 to the entire school for some special occasion or other. I took the task very seriously, and prepared by analysing the story on my own terms, to refine my delivery. Let's say my interpretation was not the one usually regarded as official.

Feel free to suggest extra tags in the comments, or say anything you like! I haven't done this before.

Update: edited the title to go with the others.
