Work Text:
It’s only 10 minutes after Seokjin leaves his cabin that Taehyung caves and pulls out his phone. He’s lying in bed and it was only moments ago that Seokjin was here with him. Now it feels empty and strange. He didn’t even know Seokjin until a few days ago, but somehow now, he can’t imagine what life was like before.
He’d never experienced something so intoxicating and deep like he had with Seokijn over Christmas. They met, fell for each other and had sex for the first time all in a matter of days and now Seokjin was leaving already. It would be a few more days before Taehyung was able to see him again. And then after that? Who knows what would happen.
Taehyung still wasn’t entirely sure what they were. A couple? Friends who hook up occasionally? A fling that was never meant to be repeated? He wants to bask in the glow of his post-coital haze and not over-analyze anything or scare Seokjin away, but this is definitely something they will need to discuss soon.
Taehyung was supposed to be getting back to the states in January to finish his internship but now, he’s not so sure he even wants that anymore. It’s probably crazy to change all your plans for a guy you just met, but he just knows there’s something special between them that he doesn’t want to give up on before it even starts.
They have plans to see each other again on New Years. Perhaps they can figure out what they want to be then?
My bed still smells like you.
Taehyung sends to him and he stares at the ceiling as he eagerly waits for a response. When his phone vibrates he tries to calm his nerves and not respond too quickly.
Good. Maybe you won’t forget me then.
Taehyung wants to respond that he’d never be able to forget Seokjin or their days spent together but he doesn’t want to move too fast or come off too overbearing.
Don’t think I could.
He writes back, and adds a wink emoji to appear to come off a bit more casual.
Seokjin doesn’t respond right away but eventually, after about ten minutes, a text comes through.
Is it New Years yet?
They spend the next few days texting constantly. Taehyung gave up on the idea of not looking overbearing after that first night. Seokjin had been responding with equal fever so he knows he’s not the only one feeling this.
The texts are flirty but also pretty casual, nothing too serious is said though them. Taehyung wants to wait until he sees Seokjin in person before bringing up their “relationship” or whatever it is that they are.
Once New Years Eve hits Taehyung is a bit of a mess, nerves enveloping his entire body. He changes about six times until he’s satisfied with the outfit he’s got on, dark jeans with a black and white patterned shirt tucked in and his sleeves rolled. He throws on a long coat for when he’s outside. He knows he looks good, and he can’t wait to show off for Seokjin.
When he finally spots him, walking into the party, Taehyung wants to run over to him and tackle him to the floor, cover his face in kisses and never let him leave. But he refrains. Only because they are in front of all these people. Technically Seokjin and Jimin are supposed to be “dating” and neither have told their parents the truth yet, so Taehyung has to be good.
Seokjin looks so good, and it’s going to be physically impossible for Taehyung to keep his hands to himself. He wonders how long he’ll be able to manage. They smile at each other from across the room as his mom takes their coats from them.
Taehyung saunters away from the family he was talking to and makes his way over. He can’t take his eyes off Seokjin as they finally get near each other.
But he knows he needs to be polite and bows to Jungkook, saying hello. He’s never met him before and doesn’t know anything about him other than what Seokjin’s briefly mentioned over text. But he’s glad that Jimin finally got the guts to ask him out.
He then moves to his cousin Jimin, giving him a quick hug. He saves Seokjin for last and even though he’s happy to see him he can’t help but feel nervous too. He’s not sure how he should act.
“Hi.” Taehyung say softly.
“Hi.” Seokjin responds, moving forward to wrap his arms around Taehyung timidly.
Taehyung can’t help but breathe into it. He’s missed touching Seokjin. Missed smelling him. It’s crazy to think how attached he got in just a few days.
“We’re gonna get some snacks.” Jimin says to them before continuing, “Remember we are in front of family.”
Taehyung laughs nervously, pulling away from Seokjin. Jungkook and Jimin head in another direction as Taehyung turns around. He nods his head slightly, to a quieter section of the room and Seokjin follows immediately.
“I can’t believe you’re actually here.” Taehyung whispers to Seokjin, tugging on his jacket and pulling him close. Taehyung shifts so that he’s standing directly behind him, and no one can see his hands playing with the front of Jin’s shirt.
“Me neither.” Seokjin says, “But we should probably be careful… prying eyes and all?”
“How long are you guys gonna keep up the charade?” Taehyung asks Seokjin and he shrugs his shoulders, looking a little disappointed.
“We’ll hopefully tell everyone soon.” He says quietly. “Do you think you can wait a little longer for me?”
Taehyung smiles, resisting the urge to tug Seokjin closer. “Of course I’ll wait for you,” Taehyung shifts the slightest bit, looking right into Seokjin's eyes, “so this thing, between us… I mean, are we…”
Taehyung really doesn’t know how to ask, but he needs to know.
“Together?” Seokjin surprises him by saying, “I hope so?”
Taehyung can’t stop the huge smile that spreads on his face. And sure, a part of him feels like he’s still in grade school trying to talk to his crush. But he also doesn’t care. “God I really want to kiss you.”
He can see Seokjin blushing and it makes him smile too. He’s missed it. Even though it’s only been a week since Christmas it feels like such a long time ago.
“Me too. I can’t stop thinking about that night…”
There’s very clear and obvious tension between them as they attempt to make idle chit chat and remain “good” in front of Taehyung’s family. Taehyung fights the urge to touch Seokjin every second and tries his hardest to be content with just looking. Though the more he drinks the harder it gets. When he drinks, he gets flirty.
Seokjin can see that his drink is getting low and offers to get him another and Taehyung nods his head, handing Seokjin his glass. Their fingers touch for the briefest moment and it's like electricity shoots through Taehyung’s veins. He’s going to have to find somewhere he and Seokjin can talk alone… soon.
He sees Jin make his way over to where Jimin is standing and tries to make chit chat with some relatives of his, forcing his eyes away from Seokjin. But as they talk it’s all a haze, he literally cannot focus on anything else.
Taehyung gets a bit impatient when Seokjin takes longer than he expected and he makes his way back over.
“What are you two up to?” He teases, placing a hand on Seokjin’s shoulder and looking between the two of them.
“Jimin will fill you in, I need to run to the bathroom.” Seokjin smiles and then Taehyung can feel fingers tightening over his own hand. Again, electricity runs through him as he watches Seokjin leave. For a second it seemed like Seokjin was going to kiss him and when Taehyung turns to look at Jimin, it's obvious he caught it too.
“Clearly it’s gong well for you two?”
“Yeah… it is.” Taehyung answers, the smile on his face making his feelings probably very obvious.
“You guys better cool it or everyone’s gonna figure out what’s really going on.”
“I can’t help it. I like him so much.” Taehyung takes a sip of his drink.
“Is it serious this time Taehyung? Or this just another one of your flings? Because Seokjin is the best person I know and I swear if you hurt him…”
“Whoa, I’m not going to hurt him chimchim.” Taehyung interrupts, “I really like him.”
And it’s the truth. He’s never really felt this way about anyone before. He doesn’t know what it is exactly, but something about Seokjin is just different than all the others he’d ever been interested in.
“Good. Because he cares about you too.”
“I know he does.” Taehyung says with conviction. Seokjin’s one of the most honest people he’s ever met. He knows that their feelings are mutual. “We talked about things, earlier. And we want to give this a real chance, I think. So…” Taehyung looks hesitant to tell Jimin the next part, “I think I am going to stay in Korea. And not go back to the states.”
“Wait, seriously?” Jimin asks. He looks shocked. “Does Jin know this?”
“Not yet.” Taehyung says. “I didn’t want to scare him off….”
“You won’t.” Jimin says. “You should tell him. Tonight.”
“Okay, maybe I will.”
“Perhaps at midnight? And then you can give him his New Years kiss.”
“Right… are you forgetting something? What about the family?”
Surely he cannot kiss Seokjin in front of everyone here. Unless he wants to give someone a heart attack. But he does think about how nice it would be to kiss his… boyfriend? He’s not sure what exactly they are just yet.
“What about them?” Jimin says, surprising him.
Taehyung smiles, eyes crinkling as he pats Jimin on the shoulder, “You should maybe take your own advice too you know?” He says quietly, walking away. He needs to find Seokjin.
Much later in the night, as it’s getting closer and closer to midnight, Taehyung finally plucks up the courage to have “the talk” with Seokjin.
“What’s going on?” Seokjin asks him, chuckling softly when Taehyung tells him to sit.
“I need to tell you something and I hope you’re okay with it…” Taehyung starts and Seokjin stares at him with wide eyes.
“What is it? You’re kinda scaring me.”
Taehyung laughs nervously, shifting a little closer to him. “I think I am going to turn down my internship for next year and stay here in Seoul…”
Seokjin doesn’t say anything in response and Taehyung starts to internally freak out. Is Seokjin going to think they are moving too quickly?
“Wait, really?” Seokjin asks and Taehyung nods. “Why wouldn’t I be okay with that?”
“Because, I didn’t know if you thought I was only doing it for you.”
“Well… are you?” Seokjin laughs.
“No.” Taehyung lies. “Maybe. But there are other reasons too…”
“Taehyung…”
“I can’t go back Seokjin. And don’t tell me not to make any decisions based on you because… well, because… you’re important to me now.” Taehyung spits out. “And I don’t want to be away from you.”
Seokjin’s face lights up but he still looks hesitant.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” Taehyung cuts him off before he can finish. “I miss my family too. And I can always go back to the internship later if I want. I mean, not to brag but in case you didn’t know my parents have money… so, I have connections.”
“Okay…” Seokjin laughs, then he reaches out and takes one of Taehyung’s hands into his own. Taehyung knows he should push him away, because anyone could look over and see them right now, but he can’t bear to do it. “So if you stay then, what does that mean exactly?”
Taehyung knows exactly what Seokjin is asking him and he doesn’t want to create any sort of confusion, so he just blurts it out, “I want to be with you. Officially. I want to see where this goes. I mean… if you want that too?”
For a brief second he worries what Seokjin will say but then he’s just smiling bigger and intertwining their fingers together, “of course I want that. I was really bummed thinking about you leaving again. But, what are you going to do here?”
“I don’t know…” Taehyung answers honestly, “get a job somewhere and… be with you?”
“Okay,” Seokjin says again, glancing down at their hands. Taehyung can see his face getting redder, “now I’m the one that really wants to kiss you.” Seokjin whispers.
“How about a hug instead?” Taehyung offers, letting go of Seokjin’s hand so he can lean in and wrap his arms around Seokjin's shoulders.
Seokjin sinks into it, his face tucked right into Taehyung’s neck. It feels so nice, and warm, and soft and Taehyung never wants to pull away.
He knows they are supposed to be discreet but he cannot help himself when he pulls back and leans in, kissing Seokjin, finally.
Seokjin moans softly at the gesture, returning the kiss with equal intensity.
The last thing Taehyung is even thinking about is anyone else, but when he hears a sharp gasp from behind him, he pulls away, fearing the worst.
His aunt, amongst others, are watching the two of them. She has a shocked expression on her face. His own parents are nowhere around, thankfully, but Taehyung knows that it won’t be long before the gossip is spreading through the entire family.
He wants to get up and say something to her but he’s too late, he can see her stalking over to Jimin instead.
“Shit.” Seokjin mutters next to him. “You shouldn’t have done that.”
“I know…” Taehyung responds, turning back to him, “but I wanted to.”
They watch as Jimin’s mom scolds him and Taehyung wonders if maybe he should get up and go over to them but decides to try later, it seems that Jimin’s got things somewhat under control.
He catches Jimin’s eye and smiles at him sheepishly, feeling bad that he’s taking the brunt of the anger. Though the scheme to fake date Seokjin was his idea after all.
“Let’s get out of here.” Taehyung says suddenly, not wanting to have to confront his family. He just wants to spend the end of the year with Seokjin.
“What about the party?” Seokjin asks as Taehyung grabs his hand and drags him towards the door.
"Screw the party!" He laughs. They get their coats and put on their shoes.
Once he’s got Seokjin out in the hallway he immediately slams him into the wall, kissing him passionately. It feels so right, finally kissing Seokjin again. His mouth is warm and his arms are tight around Taehyung’s waist.
“I just really wanted to properly kiss you.” Taehyung smiles as he pulls back.
Seokjin’s breathing gets heavier as his hands find Taehyung’s face, pulling him back for another heated kiss, this time even deeper than before.
He doesn’t think he could ever get enough of kissing Seokjin. He could stay here for hours and do this, but he has something else in mind and limited time.
“Come on.”
Taehyung yanks on Seokjin’s arm, dragging him down the stairs and outside of the building.
Taehyung tells Seokjin that everything will be fine and he will talk to his parents and aunt later and explain the situation.
“They loved you at Christmas. They will understand once they hear the whole story. And next year, you’ll be coming with me to the cabin.”
Seokjin beams at that, and grabs Taehyung’s hand into his own, interlocking their fingers.
“Where are we going?” Seokjin asks as Taehyung pulls him down towards the street corner.
“This is the perfect view of the whole city, and we can see everyone celebrating.”
And Taehyung is right. The view is perfect. Lights and decorations can be seen inside numerous windows from this angle, and if you listen close enough you can hear the buzz of everyone around the city just waiting for the new year to ring in. It’s fairly quiet on the streets at this hour and it’s freezing outside, but at least they have each other to keep themselves warm.
“Wait, is that snow?” Seokjin asks, looking up and Taehyung just watches him admire the small flakes that are starting to litter down. He looks adorable and so young staring up at them, like it’s his first time seeing it. Taehyung was right before. The view is incredible.
“I was hoping the weather app was right. Taehyung says. “The last time it snowed… we were out on those snow mobiles together. It’s insane to think that was only a week ago?”
“I know.” Seokjin responds. “Did you ever think then that we would end up here, together?”
“I hoped we would.” Taehyung says quietly and he can feel the pressure of Seokjin’s hand where he’s squeezing. Seokjin leans in again and Taehyung closes the gap, kissing him slowly. After a moment Seokjin pulls away, turning his head upwards.
“Look.”
Taehyung follows Seokjin’s gaze upwards towards his parents penthouse. They can see the party goers all inside near the windows waiting to countdown. There are only a few minutes to go.
“It’s almost midnight.” Taehyung says, showing Seokjin his phone that reads 11:59. “We have less than a minute.”
“Then we better make it a good one.” Seokjin says cheekily, grabbing Taehyung around the waist and pulling him in, kissing him hard.
They kiss for much longer than a minute, celebration of the New Year ringing in all around them. But it’s like time has stopped for a moment because all Taehyung can concentrate on is Seokjin. His soft lips, his long fingers, his sweet smile, his caring nature… he doesn’t know how he ever got so lucky.
“Happy New Year Taehyung.” Seokjin murmurs.
“Happy New Year, Seokjin-hyung.” Taehyung says back, smiling softly.
“We should take a picture and send it to Jimin. He might be wondering where we went off to.”
“Hopefully he’s too busy kissing Jungkook to notice.” Taehyung teases.
Taheyung dips in to kiss Seokjin again, just as he snaps a photo. Afterwards, he sends it to Jimin. A moment later, he is promptly messaging back.
Seokjin holds his phone out to Taehyung, showing him what is written. Included with the text, 'now we’re even', is a photo of Jimin and Jungkook together, and they look cozy.
“You’re even?” Taehyung asks.
“He told me at Christmas that I owed him for getting us together.” Seokjin laughs. “I was the one that practically asked Jungkook to come. So, I guess we’re even now.”
“Wow, what matchmakers you two are.” Taehyung teases.
But it’s true, if it weren’t for Jimin, Taehyung would never have met Seokjin. He pulls out his phone too, sending a quick thank you to Jimin for introducing them. He’s never properly said it.
Then he has Seokjin airdrop the photo to his phone so that he can post it to social media. He tags Seokjin as well as uses the hashtag #boyfriend in his post.
“Oh man, my friends and family are going to completely freak out. I haven’t exactly told them about us yet…” Seokjin says.
“Yeah, I haven’t really told any of my friends about you either… but right now, I really don’t care.”
“Neither do I.” Seokjin finishes, smiling at Taehyung and holding him close. “Right now, all that matters is this.”
It’s cheesy. And sweet. And perfect. And Taehyung feels the exact same way.
Taehyung thinks about their future together, and how this coming year is going to be so different from any of his previous ones. He is excited to see where this new journey with Seokjin will take them.
“Come here,” Taehyung says again, pulling Seokjin back in for yet another kiss, “let’s start this year off the right way.”
