“You know, if you wanted some company,” Patrick begins, “I could stop by.”
David looks at him over his shoulder, stunned. “I—“
“I didn’t mean to invite myself,” he rushes to add. “I just figured I’d offer.”
“You don’t have to do that. Honestly. I’m fine with being alone, don’t feel bad for me.”
“I wasn’t, I just—I thought it would be nice.” Patrick shrugs, turning his attention back to the broom as he drags it across the floor. “There’s no pressure.”
David stares at him for a moment, dropping his gaze and bringing it back to Patrick. “I mean if you really wanted…you could come over around nine.”
Patrick’s head shoots up. “Yeah. Okay,” he breathes.
“Okay.”

David hates everything having to do with New Year's - the resolutions, the false hope - especially after the year he's had. But Patrick shows him that maybe it's not all that bad.
