New Years surprise!

Summary:

New Year was coming and Ema had a surprise set up for Kay.

Little did she know Kay's going to steal that surprise without them even knowing.

Work Text:

It was a normal Wright Anything Agency New Year party; lots of people were invited, some familiar; some aren’t.

Trucy and Maya were getting fireworks ready, Phoenix and Edgeworth were bickering over something, while Athena and Juniper weren’t outside. Apollo and Klavier were stealing some glances at each other, Lana was talking to Angel and Marshall, and there were also people Kay didn't know.

Kay went inside the building and something caught her eye.

Kay noticed Ema near the agency’s door before the fireworks went off. She wore a dark green sweater vest with a normal button-up and black jeans, while Kay just wore a maroon button-up and skinny jeans. She looked too nervous for the new year. Kay knew Ema wasn’t the type of person to be nervous about New Year from how long they’ve known her.

“Kay.” She turned to Ema. “Can I experiment with you?”

“Sure! What kind?” Ema looked nervous; her hands kept on moving around.

“Uh, it’s… um, a New Years' experiment.” She answered.

“Oh? So it’s gonna be a surprise?” She nodded.

“Yeah, a surprise.” Her voice cracked. Kay didn’t know her voice could crack considering her age.

“Oh, cool!” Kay laughed. “I… I have a little surprise for you too!”

“Oh, swell.” She cleared her throat.

Kay took her hand. “Let’s go.”

“G-go where?” Kay could’ve sworn Ema was flushing.

“Outside, unless you don’t like the fireworks.” Ema hesitated.

“Sure, lead the way.” Kay smiled and ran outside.

Maya jumped on them as soon as they got out of the building.

“Boo!”

“MAYA!” Ema jumped back, which made Kay follow.

“Oh, so you’re gonna do it?” She said teasingly.

“Shh!” Kay looked at both of them. Ema was bright red while Maya was giggling. “Shut up! You’re gonna ruin the surprise!”

“So you’re gonna do it,” Lana said, Ema groaned and covered her face with her hands, which meant she let go of Kay’s hand.

“Yes! So shut up or else you’re gonna ruin the surprise!” Ema grabbed Kay’s hand again and walked away from the giggling duo.

“Can you give me a hint on what the surprise is?”

“No, I want it to be a full surprise.” Ema gripped Kay’s hand again.

“Ah! Fraulein!” Klavier exclaimed. “You’re gonna do it?”

“Wait, you know, too!?” Kay yelled.

Ema kept on trying to shush him but he didn’t yield. “Ja, everyone that knows you do.”

“Even Sebastian!?” Kay pointed at Sebastian who was talking to his partner.

“Ja, even Sebastian.” Ema deflated.

“Klav. What did I say?” Ema said sternly.

“To not tell Kay what the surprise was?”

“Yes.”

“And?” Apollo butted in. “Klav didn’t tell Kay what it was, all he did was tell them that everyone here knows about it.”

“Shut up, Apollo.” She muttered loud enough for them to hear.

“But mein Schatz is correct! You are the one in the wrong.” He gave his boyfriend a quick kiss on the forehead.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” She blew out a puff of air. “Kay, let’s go.”

“Uh… where exactly?”

“Somewhere that doesn’t have anyone annoying me.” She walked near the office again; it was slightly nearer to the others; but it was far enough for them to not hear them.

“We’re gonna wait it out here.” She declared.

“Why?” Kay asked, and she was getting impatient.

“It’s a bit of a surprise.” She sighed. “Look, it'd be better if we stay here, trust me.”

“Alright, I’m gonna spend the first day of the new year with you, huh?”

“I-I guess.” Ema looked around.

~~~
Forty minutes passed.
The fireworks were about to go off, there were twenty seconds left before the next year.
“Kay.” Kay felt Ema grip on their hand. “Remember what I said?”
“You had a surprise for me?” She nodded.
“Yeah.” Ema moved closer.
“What’s the surprise, Ems?” Kay looked up at her friend, she looked closer than before.
“You’ll see.” Kay could smell her hair; they could smell a hint of coconut.
They could hear some fireworks going off already.
“I'm getting impatient, Ems.”
Kay looked to the side, and they noticed all of their friends and family getting some sparks and their fireworks ready.
“Just wait, I'm getting impatient too.”
"Yeah..." Then Kay remembered something.
“Ema.” Kay’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Ten seconds left!” They heard Trucy yell.
“Yeah?” Ema smiled slightly.
“Nine!”
“I also have a surprise.” Kay could feel Ema’s hands on her hips.
“Eight!”
“Really?” Ema whispered over the others' yelling. Kay placed their hands on Ema’s shoulder.
“Seven!”
“Yes,” Kay whispered back.
“Six!” The fireworks were lit.
“When will the surprise happen?”
“Five!”
“Maybe…” Kay pulled Ema closer slightly.
“Four!”
“Maybe?” Ema repeated.
“Three!”
“Don’t you have a surprise for me?”
“Two!”
“I’m more interested in yours now.”
“One!”
“Then, you’re in luck.” Kay placed their hands on Ema's cheeks.
The fireworks flew into the sky. “Happy New Year!!!!”
Kay closed the small space between them as soon as the fireworks went off. Ema was surprised, but she sank into it after a moment.
Everything fell silent, they couldn’t hear the fireworks going off; neither could they hear their friends and family hollering.
Ema stepped back from Kay. She looked surprised.
“I-I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking at all!” Kay yelled first. “I thought–you were–so I– and then you– so–”
Ema started to laugh.
“Dang it!” She said as she laughed. “You stole my chance!”
“Wait what?” Kay noticed Ema looked pinker.
“You thief! You stole my surprise!” She almost fell from her laughter. “Whatever, I… heh, I wasn’t expecting that, but I guess the outcome is the same.”
“Huh!? Explain!” Kay looked at everyone else behind Ema, who was watching them; one of them, Maya, started walking towards them.
“Well…” Maya said as she walked toward them. “Ema wanted to share a New Years' kiss with you, but I guess you stole her chance.”
“I… I stole her chance?” Kay repeated.
“Yeah, and I was so ready! I was soooo ready to ask you out and everything, but…” She smiled. “I guess this is better.”
“Okay, then…” Kay grinned. “Ema Skye, will you go on a date with me?”
Ema was caught off guard again, while Maya started cackling.
“When?”
“That I did not think of,” Kay answered with a grin still on their face.
“Then why don’t I take you out on a date next week?” Ema asked, she was met with a small gasp from Kay.
“Of course!” Kay gave her a quick peck on her cheek and walked back to the others.
“Uhhhh….” Ema buffered. “Let's go inside.”
“You’re head over heels for her, huh?” Maya said with a grin.
“Shut up, let’s go inside with the others.” Ema started to go inside the building.
“Oi!” Maya ran up to her. “Why can’t you let me bully you like the good sister I am!?”
“We aren’t sisters just because Mia and Lana were a fling,” Ema answered back.
“Meanie!” Maya stuck her tongue out. “I’m gonna go to Franz, bye!”
Ema noticed Kay ahead of her; they were making fun of Sebastian and his partner, Hugh O’Connor. She smiled at them.
Kay noticed her and mouthed ‘Happy New Year’.
She mouthed it back, she was met with a wink and a finger-gun.
The tables turned on her, but it all turned out the way she wanted it to be.
Thank goodness.
