Chapter 1: So You Frequent Dark Suspicious Alleyways Often?

Summary:

Introduction to Morgan (D Tier) and a fateful encounter with somebody in a dark alleyway.

Morgan uses any pronouns and Alex (S Tier) uses they/them

Notes:

I was given far too much power and I decided to use it for evil (aka angst). I was also not seeing any stories of this that were more than like three chapters. So I decided to give all of you a longer multi-chapter fic. Most of the chapters will probably not be all that long but there will be quite a few of them.

(I also did not write a good chunk of this in the span of two days... no way what are you talking about... I did)
(Even though I am supposed to be working on an important presentation that is due Monday)
(I will probably edit all of the chapters after I finish the book)

Chapter Text

Today was turning out to be a pretty good day so far. Though Morgan was exhausted since it was a long day of dragging themself around chasing after low-ranking criminals. It was finally starting to catch up to them. Having such a bland superpower did that to one. With all the flashy and flamboyant powers other super’s had it left other aspiring heroes in the dust. Picking up the low-level criminals that were too strong for the police to handle alone. If Morgan had another go around in life he would have been more firm with his unwillingness to become a hero in the first place.

They sighed, shaking the thoughts from their head. Focusing on making their way out of the hero complex. Without drawing any attention to themself in the process. Ducking out of the way of Dave Dodger and his entourage of caped crusaders. Morgan luckily managed to keep a majority of their eyes away from them. Unluckily one of the eyes that they happened to catch was one of the people they were trying to avoid.

“Hey, Morgan!” His sister Marigold called out, he barely held back a flinch at being caught, “Wanna go out for drinks with me and the team?”

Morgan chuckled awkwardly before responding, “No thanks maybe next time.”

Marigold nodded and dropped the subject easily, sometimes Morgan almost hoped that she would have pushed a bit more. Moving out of the building quietly with practiced ease. Like most days they headed to the cafe situated a fair distance from both her work and apartment. Greeting Jax, Morgan’s favorite barista, and ordering their usual. Unlike usual they linger for a few moments afterward to chat sparingly with Jax. They did not stay long before beginning their journey home, half-drunk coffee cup in hand.

While they were on their way home in a spur-of-the-moment decision, they decided to use the alleyways to get to their apartment faster. Dead on their feet, they made their way through the winding alleys, taking gulps of their coffee while they walked. No one made any moves to mess with them as their hero suit was peeking through the unzipped part of their hoodie. That alone was enough to dissuade most individuals. Though when in the face of someone stronger than oneself one cannot help but feel hopeless. Which is the feeling that overcame Morgan when he turned the corner of the alleyway.

Maybe wandering into a dark alleyway turned out to not have been such a good idea after all. It was not often that Morgan took this route, but after the conversation with Jax, they were more mentally exhausted. The urge to get home fueled their lack of thinking things through. They were more than dead. What could some lowly run-of-the-mill D Tier superhero do against an A Tier supervillain? She usually ran after low-ranking criminals that were just beyond the abilities of what the police could handle. The villain raised a gloved hand in her direction, they flinched back. Before whatever kind of attack, the villain was going to throw at Morgan was launched, the villain was sent flying into a wall.

When the dust from the rubble cleared Morgan knew they were fucked. Her supposed savior was a villain. Not just any villain. This one is the one who has held the title of most wanted for longer than she has been in active hero work. The villain’s self-proclaimed name “S Tier” sent shivers up the back of any sane person who heard it. Morgan had a full view of their usually masked face and their sharp yellow eyes. Morgan was painfully aware that he was staring, not that he meant to. However, it is not every day one gets to see the face of the world’s most wanted. S Tier was not even paying much attention to Morgan, focusing on the hole they made in the wall with the body of the A Tier.

‘A Tier was not getting back up,’ Morgan thought, the taste of bile tickling the back of their throat. Death was not something Morgan had to deal with often, even in their line of work. Usually, they worked far away from the heart of the battles with powerful supervillains. Nowhere close to the gruesome battles that S Tier usually participated in. S Tier’s chilling gaze slid over to his form. The pair made eye contact in the dark dingy alleyway. Morgan stumbled back, holding his coffee cup in a vice grip.

The adrenaline pulsing through his veins dulled his senses. Eyes wide as he glances around for some kind of escape from this perilous situation. There was no plausible way that he was going to make it out of this mess alive. So Morgan did what Morgan does best. Try to flub their way out.

“So… come here often?”

‘Stupid! Stupid! I’m actually going to die,” Morgan’s brain was shorting out as she inched back, wishing she had held her tongue.

S Tier’s figure towered over Morgan, their silvery voice filling the whole of the alleyway, “No, not usually.”

S Tier had an amused look on their face as if they were not moments away from vaporizing Morgan. They held all of the cards in this scenario, being the stronger of the two. Morgan was completely at their mercy, if he had any weaker of a will he might have considered begging for his life. With practiced ease, he schooled his face to be clear of any revealing emotions. S Tier seemed to see right through Morgan, an eerie look on their face.

After they gazed down at him for what they deemed long enough they spoke, “Get out of here D Tier before I change my mind,” turning their back to her, “Tell anyone and I will know.”

Morgan’s breath was caught in their throat, pausing for a moment longer before turning tail and bolting away from the scene. He was forced to backtrack and take his normal route so as to steer clear of that whole mess. When Morgan got back to her apartment she pressed her back against the door, sliding down till she was sitting on the floor. She exhaled sharply forcing her body to relax.

It was only after the adrenaline of the situation fully wore off that it clicked in Morgan’s head. The all-mighty supervillain that had inadvertently shown their fact to him, subsequently showing their eyes to him. Was his soulmate. The feeling that bubbled up in the back of his head had been muddled by the adrenaline coursing through his veins. Morgan’s eyes were wide and their breathing shallow as the realization of how bad the whole situation was. Only made worse when she further realized that S Tier knew of their bond as soulmates. Morgan’s head throbbed as they leaned hunched over the kitchen counter, holding their head in their hands. Today was not turning out to be a good day.

Chapter 2: Coffee with the Enemy? Sure why Not?

Chapter Text

The start of Morgan’s day was absolute shit, they had fallen asleep on the grimy kitchen floor. Their encounter with S Tier took much more than they previously thought out of them. They did not even have the chance to think about making something to eat before they were passed out on the floor. Leaving them hungry and sore from sleeping on the cheap linoleum floor. After taking a quick glance at the clock they figured they could only have a quick bowl of cereal so they could take a shower and stop by the cafe. After showering and horking down a bowl of dry cereal they headed out. Hero outfit underneath a semi-clean pair of pants and the hoodie they wore yesterday.

This time around Morgan steered clear of any and all alleyways. She crossed the street when anyone even remotely suspicious looking was near. Figuring she could avoid S Tier entirely if they tried to pay her a visit. This plan was foiled as soon as she entered the cafe. Morgan stared wide-eyed at the person before her. S Tier was sitting in a booth, waving them over with a gloved hand. S Tier was garbed in a darkly colored business suit embellished with gold detailing. She was hesitant in her approach, making a mental note of all the exits in the building just in case. Morgan’s back was rigid as she sat down in the chair across from S Tier.

“How do you know I get my coffee from here?!” Morgan grit out, keeping her voice low as she spoke. Her hands were clenched uncomfortably at her side, going white from the pressure.

“You were holding a cup of it when we met,” S Tier spoke, a smug tone tinting their voice, “Plus I come here on occasion anyway it has a nice view.”

“What do you want?” Morgan asked, narrowing his eyes suspiciously at their light-hearted response.

“Who would not want to have a nice conversation with one’s soulmate.”

Morgan stared at them, “You are better off forgetting I exist.”

“Hard to do that when you are such an interesting person. I mean a member of the most successful hero family in history, yet here you are some bottom-of-the-barrel D Tier,” S Tier spoke, running a finger along the rim of their cup. They leaned forward eyes brimming with interest and asked, “So why become a hero?”

“Well, when it’s either heroism or disownment I think I went with the obvious choice,” Morgan was startled at the honest answer that escaped from their mouth. They had never said it out loud, though it was accurate to what happened. S Tier was staring at their form, with a raised brow.

They let out a soft hum before pushing a cup of coffee towards them, “Hope you do not mind but I requested your usual.”

Morgan stared bewildered at the supervillain before them.

“I sure got a nasty look from the barista when I dropped your name,” S Tier spoke, “Is there some kind of history between you two?”

“I do not see how this is relevant,” He replied curtly.

“I was just making conversation.”

“Fine, we can make some conversation. Can I ask why you had your mask off in the first place?”

“It’s common decency to remove one’s mask when hosting a meeting.”

“Oh.”

Conversation stagnated after Morgan’s question. Leaving him to sit muscles tense, ready to bolt at any given notice. He almost lept from his seat when S Tier stood up, a now empty coffee cup in their hand. After disposing of the cup, they gave Morgan a simple wave.

“See you later D Tier.”

Morgan slumped back into the booth seat, their breathing was shot. Greedily gulping in mouthfuls of air. Their heart was sure to give out under all the stress it suddenly had to put up with. Morgan could already feel the dull thrums of a headache coming on. With a sigh they grabbed their still full coffee cup. Before they could leave the cafe they were stopped by Jax.

“How do you know that douchebag?”

Morgan blinked at the brashness in their tone, “Just someone I met the other day. Why?”

“They are bad news, the kind you do not want to be linked to,” Jax spoke, their gaze flicking over to the door where S Tier had left, “Just be careful.”

“I will do not worry,” Morgan spoke easily, mentally berating themself for not telling someone that a supervillain was just in the cafe. Jax seemed to relax ever so slightly at Morgan’s reassurance, bidding her farewell as they went back behind the counter. Morgan waved them goodbye before exiting the cafe. She was already mentally spent leaving her not wanting to go into work and having to deal with a bunch of self-righteous assholes.
