Work Text:
Kyungsoo has a thing for sweets, any kind, really, but he prefers chocolate over candy. He likes the rich kind. The kind that melts in his mouth. Like milk chocolate but more decadent, that leaves a taste behind… that kind of chocolate. His favorite chocolate, he buys at least once a month, and it comes in a very pretty box with words in elegant, looping gold font: Made for you.
That’s a cliche statement that a lot of brands like to use. At least, they all use a similar phrase. Kyungsoo can see why it would be fitting for chocolate. Like chocolate, it’s sweet. It’s romantic. The idea that something was made just for you; it’s like a promise of some sort, like this box of chocolates is yours, created with you in mind.
It’s a lot like soulmates, in that way.
“You’re still eating those?” Jongdae frowns at the box that’s sitting on the coffee table. As his roommate, he has a free pass to take a piece, which he does even while scolding him, “You’re eating too much sugar these days. You know there’s another box? Someone brought them over here.”
Kyungsoo perks up with interest. “Really?”
“Don’t show that much excitement over chocolate; it’s actually concerning.”
It’s not that. But Kyungsoo doesn’t argue. Instead he gets up off the couch to look at the front door.
“It’s in the kitchen. I put it on the counter.”
Really, the box is identical to the one he has on the coffee table. Not that Kyungsoo doesn’t already know who gave it to him, but that person knows him well. “Must be an early birthday present.”
“Must be.” Jongdae peers into the kitchen to watch him untie the ribbon. “Any note? Maybe it’s from your soulmate.”
“I don’t even know who they are.”
“But they could know who you are.”
“And know where I live? What are the odds?”
“Maybe it was in their vision.”
Not very convincing. There’s no note inside the box, not that there needs to be one for Kyungsoo to know who it came from. Just the usual white card. Made for you. “You think we’ll still be living here in the far future? Don’t tell me; are you my soulmate?”
“Unless your name is Kim Minseok and you are the most adorable person in the entire universe, I don’t think we’re soulmates.”
Of course. Kyungsoo expected as much, anyway. Jongdae had his vision a few months ago, on his twenty-first birthday, which is when everyone gets their dream about their soulmate. Although, he didn’t need the dream. His soulmate dreamt of him first, and found him before his birthday.
“Speaking of Minseok, you’re going to meet him at the airport soon, right?”
“This Wednesday. I hope you don’t mind if he crashes your birthday party.”
Kyungsoo doesn’t mind in the least. His friend’s eyes shine just from talking about his soulmate; it’s cute to see him so happy. Unfortunately… “I’m hanging out with Baekhyun on my birthday.”
“So you’re spending your birthday with someone you haven’t seen in years, but not with your favorite roommate?”
“You’re my only roommate. And we met a few months ago. I flew out to see him, remember?”
“Still.”
“If it makes you feel better, we can have dinner together. The four of us.”
“Ooh…” Jongdae grins. “A double date? A double birthday date?”
As if. Kyungsoo rolls his eyes, ignoring his roommate’s teasing. Jongdae hasn’t even met Baekhyun yet — somehow, they’ve missed each other each time Baekhyun came to visit — but he still teases Kyungsoo nonstop about him. It’s just because he and Baekhyun are childhood friends and Kyungsoo is always calling him. It looks suspicious. But there’s nothing to be suspicious about.
There’s only one person, his soulmate, that he’s meant for, and he doesn’t think the odds of Baekhyun being his is very high.
***
“You got it, right?” The moment he picks up the call, Baekhyun asks. They usually call around this time; eight in the evening is late enough to ensure that they already ate, but early enough that they can’t possibly be sleeping. Kyungsoo is in bed in his pajamas with the lights off. He likes talking in the dark. “The chocolates.”
“I did. Jongdae thinks I’m going to get sick.”
“I think he’s probably right. I’m only enabling it this time because it’s almost your birthday.”
Kyungsoo tilts his head in exaggerated confusion. “Is it for my birthday? I didn’t see any birthday cards there.”
“You’re so annoying.” With a laugh, Baekhyun says, “What, are you disappointed? I’m giving you your actual birthday gift when I come over there.”
Soon. He’ll see him soon. Kyungsoo didn’t need the reminder but he likes hearing it. Baekhyun is taking a flight just like Minseok. Except he arrives on Friday. It’s a few days after Minseok gets there and a few days before Kyungsoo’s birthday.
“Are you excited? You’re turning twenty-one.”
“What’s there to be excited about?”
“Don’t tell me you aren’t curious. You get to find out who your soulmate is, after all.”
“Like you did.”
“Yeah.”
Kyungsoo frowns. “And you still won’t tell me who it is?”
“You’ll know eventually.”
“Then I’m not telling you who mine is when I find out.”
Baekhyun gasps, but he’s laughing. “How mean of you. I thought we were best friends.”
“And yet you won’t tell me.”
“How about this?” Baekhyun pauses, like he’s thinking. “I’ll tell you,” then, slowly, “after you have your dream.”
“Whatever.”
***
Minseok turns out to be very adorable, like Jongdae said. Kyungsoo doesn’t spend a lot of time with him on the first day, since Jongdae wants to take him out on a date right away, even though he’s overcome with jet lag after coming all the way from Australia. “I’m going to school there,” he tells Kyungsoo in explanation. They’re in the kitchen in his and Jongdae’s apartment. After living with Kyungsoo for two years, Jongdae isn’t hopeless at cooking, but Minseok seems to share Kyungsoo’s sentiment that it’s better if he isn’t the one in charge of meals. Must be the magic of being someone’s soulmate that makes him so knowledgable about Jongdae’s cooking habits.
“So you’re twenty?”
They’re cutting up vegetables for curry. Jongdae is in the bathroom; he’s probably taking a shit or something, because he hasn’t come out for a while. “I’m twenty,” Kyungsoo confirms.
“Jongdae said your birthday is in a few days.”
“Don’t worry. I’m not expecting you to buy me a present.”
At that, Minseok lets out a chuckle. “But I already did.”
“We just met, though.”
“If I’m going to woo Jongdae, I have to start with his friends, right?” Minseok winks at him and he can’t help but like him a little more. Even though Minseok is older than him by a few years, it’s easy to get along with him. He’s honest and likeable. “I heard you like sweets… Jongdae wasn’t lying to me, was he?”
“If you’re saying that’s what you got me, I’m very particular about my candy,” Kyungsoo warns.
“Right. A refined palette.”
“Something like that.” The two of them exchange a smile. While they cook, Minseok tells him about his soulmate dream. Apparently, there wasn’t much to it except that he had Jongdae’s number in his phone. Because his name was my soulmate, it was easy to know that was the number he had to memorize; it’s the reason, too, why Jongdae’s number in his phone is the same thing now.
“Are you excited to have your dream?”
Kyungsoo thinks he’s going to hear that question a lot. First from Jongdae, then from Baekhyun, then from his mother the day before. Now Minseok. Honestly, he doesn’t feel excited. A part of him doesn’t even want to know.
***
“You’re twenty-one!”
“Not yet. Now get off me. I can’t breathe.”
Baekhyun looks ruffled and tired from his flight, but his eyes are bright with enthusiasm. As usual, he has a seemingly endless amount of energy. Kyungsoo has to forcefully remove him from his side to catch a breath.
“You told Jongdae, right? That I’m staying.”
“Yeah, I told him. He was mad at me for not telling him earlier so he could clear out the guest room.”
“It’s fine. I’ll take your bed.”
“Who says I’m giving you my bed?”
Baekhyun can only call Jongdae’s name so familiarly because Kyungsoo talks about him a lot during their phone calls. Oddly enough, when he introduces the two of them to each other, it’s like they’ve been friends for years. Kyungsoo is almost jealous of how well they get along with each other — that is, before Baekhyun distracts him by clinging to his back again. Minseok, too, gets along well with Baekhyun. Maybe it’s a Baekhyun thing, then. He’s just good at being with other people.
“You aren’t staying with us?” Baekhyun asks when Minseok puts on his coat after dinner. Jongdae stands by the door; he’s going to drop him off at the hotel.
“Since it’s our first time meeting in person, I’m trying to be patient.” Minseok teases, “And maybe I don’t want Kyungsoo to be a third-wheeler for the entirety of my stay.”
“I wouldn’t mind being a third wheel.”
“He’s a good friend like that,” Jongdae says. “Alright, kids, we’re off. Don’t do drugs, go to bed before ten, and be good while we’re gone, okay?”
Before Kyungsoo can object to him calling them kids, Baekhyun hugs him tightly. “Okay, dad. Drive safe!”
The door shuts and it’s just Kyungsoo and Baekhyun alone. Baekhyun pecks his cheek, dodging the swipe of his hand with a laugh. In the end, they settle on watching a movie together. It’s already ten and Jongdae isn’t home yet — he’s probably with Minseok, doing scandalous things — when Kyungsoo falls asleep on Baekhyun’s shoulder, only to wake up the next day on the couch, bundled up in a blanket with him.
***
The next few days are a mix between the four of them hanging out and Minseok and Jongdae going on dates to leave him and Baekhyun at the apartment. Spending time with Baekhyun feels the same as being on a call with him. It’s like they picked up where they left off.
“The last time we met was… my birthday, right?” Baekhyun says. They’re at an aquarium. Kyungsoo has his face against a glass, trying to get a closer look at the seahorses. “Isn’t it crazy how we barely see each other, but we’re still friends?”
“Because we call all the time, probably.”
“Right, but still. It sucks that I ended up moving. Otherwise, I’d be your best friend.”
At that, Kyungsoo turns back. “You are my best friend.”
“I am?!”
“I’m not engaging in this conversation anymore.”
“But what about Jongdae?”
“He’s a very close friend of mine,” Kyungsoo says, “but you’re closest.” Then he thinks about it. “Am I not your best friend?”
“No, you are, but-”
“Good. If I wasn’t, then I would revoke your best friend status.”
“-I thought I was the only one who thought that.”
Kyungsoo rolls his eyes. “Do you think I talk to you every day for no reason?”
“Well, no.”
“I even flew across the country for your birthday.”
“Okay, fine. So we’re best friends, confirmed. I’m glad we got that settled. I also flew here for your birthday, by the way, so that makes us even.”
He never said it was a competition, but Baekhyun is the competitive type, so he won’t argue if it entertains him.
“I can’t believe all it took was giving you a piece of candy for you to like me so much.”
“Who said I like you a lot?” Baekhyun shoves him in retaliation. He stumbles a bit, grinning. “Okay, I do like you a lot. But it wasn’t just the candy.”
He remembers it clearly. They were in primary school. Both of their parents were late, and they were the only two kids left waiting. As much as the teacher who was with them tried to entertain them, Kyungsoo wouldn’t stop crying.
Um… you shouldn’t cry so hard. Your face is getting all red and ugly. He was a scrawny little kid back then. Kyungsoo remembers thinking that if he hit him, he’d probably fall over without much effort. Although, he didn’t want to hit him. Even though he was a little mean. My name is Baekhyun. What’s your name?
K- Kyungsoo.
That’s a nice name, Kyungsoo. I’m sure your mommy will come to pick you up soon. Do you want some candy? I was saving these for later, but you can have some if you want.
It was a handful of the worst hard candies Kyungsoo had ever tasted in his life. But somehow, he felt better. It had a lot to do with the sugar but also with the boy one year older than him, who sat with him and chatted until he stopped crying, and who insisted on staying to wait with him even when his mother came first. That was how he met his best friend. They’ve been friends ever since.
“So it wasn’t just the candy, but me, right?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe,” Baekhyun echoes. “I’ll take it. Want to go to the shark tunnel? We haven’t gone yet.”
They end the night the way they’ve been for the past few days; Baekhyun lies on the floor while Kyungsoo takes his own bed. It sounds heartless, but in actuality Kyungsoo knows it’s pretty comfortable. They piled comforters and pillows. It’s more unlike him to insist Baekhyun take the bed, anyway. They’re too close for chivalry like that.
One more day.
***
He, Baekhyun, Jongdae, and Minseok go to the amusement park. Since it’s the middle of winter, the tickets are fairly cheap, and the lines aren’t long, and they get around to most of the rides before stopping at the arcade. Baekhyun and Minseok battle over one of the dance games while he and Jongdae watch from the side, yelling encouragement from the sidelines.
“You can do it, Min!”
“Minseok, if you win, I’ll give you five dollars.”
Baekhyun misses a step, distracted as he whines, “You’re supposed to be rooting for me!”
They watch for a while and Kyungsoo gives the five dollars as promised when Minseok wins. When the two decide to go for a rematch, Jongdae grabs his wrist and drags him to the air hockey table.
“Do you like Baekhyun?”
“Huh?” The puck slides right into the goal. Kyungsoo tsks. “You did that on purpose.”
“No, it was a real question. Do you?”
Sending the puck Jongdae’s way, Kyungsoo shrugs. “We’re childhood friends. Of course I like him.”
“You know that’s not what I meant.”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay.” This time, when Jongdae tries to score on him, Kyungsoo is quick to deflect. “I was just wondering. Because Minseok said-”
“Minseok was talking to you about this?”
“It was actually on the first day. When we all met for the first time. He said you get all soft around Baekhyun. Which is kind of true.”
“I do not.”
“Well, of course you get soft around me too.” Jongdae sticks out a tongue when Kyungsoo rolls his eyes. “But for real, you guys are, like, really close. Like super close. You could’ve just shoved Baekhyun on the couch, but he’s sleeping in your room.”
“He insisted. Probably because he wants to be there when I wake up from my dream.”
“Which is happening tonight. Not for the past few nights. Does Baekhyun like you?”
Kyungsoo chokes. He misses his shot. “What?”
“He’s kind of clingy. But only to you.”
“We haven’t seen each other in a while.”
“Your resistance is proving more than it’s disproving.”
“Maybe he likes me,” Kyungsoo says with a shrug. “But I doubt it. We’re just close because we’ve known each other for so long. Anyway, is it even worth talking about? I have a soulmate. So does he.”
Jongdae pauses at that. “Does he know his already?”
“Yeah.” He keeps his eyes on the table, ignoring Jongdae’s expression. Without looking, it’s obvious what it’s like. “So there’s no point in talking about it.”
The silence is long and filled with the sounds of them trading the puck back and forth. After a minute, Kyungsoo manages to score. “I’m sorry, Kyungsoo.”
“Don’t be. I don’t really care in the first place. He won’t even tell me who it is.”
“He won’t? Then…”
“There they are.” Minseok jogs up to them with Baekhyun in tow. They both look sweaty but energized from their game. “We were looking for you guys.”
“Who won?” Kyungsoo asks, reaching into his back pocket for his wallet. Baekhyun grabs his hand.
“Save your money. I won.”
“Good job, then,” Kyungsoo says. He’s a bit off-put by Baekhyun’s serious tone and firm grip. When he sees Jongdae eyeing the place where their hands meet, he pulls away and clears his throat. “Are you guys hungry? Let’s eat.”
***
It’s hard to sleep, but there are too many reasons why. He keeps thinking about what Jongdae said earlier. He also keeps thinking about the fact that tonight is the night that he’ll dream about the future. He also keeps thinking about how Baekhyun is in bed with him, staring at him while he tries to sleep.
Everything is distracting.
“Can’t you just go on the floor again? You’re creeping me out.”
“Is that why you won’t close your eyes? I think we’ve been playing that no blinking game for the past five minutes.”
Kyungsoo turns his back on him, fixating his gaze on the window with a huff. “I’m thinking.”
“Personally, I just want to be here when you wake up from your dream. So you can tell me about it the moment you wake up.”
“I told you: I’m not telling you anything since you won’t tell me.”
“And I told you that I would tell you after you have your dream.”
“I don’t want to.”
“What?”
He’s probably asking him to repeat himself; he mumbled it and even muffled his voice with the comforter they’re sharing. But Kyungsoo doesn’t say it again. Somehow, Baekhyun decodes it after a second and comes closer.
“Why don’t you want to have your dream?”
“I don’t care about who my soulmate is.”
“Why?”
Kyungsoo sighs. Figures, they would have this conversation the night of his vision. He won’t continue it, though.
“I’m nervous,” he says instead. It’s kind of the truth. There’s a buzzing in his skin and his heart is beating a little faster than usual. And he’s thinking about a billion things at once. Baekhyun doesn’t say anything at first, but then he breathes out.
“Jeez…” Baekhyun puts a hand over his eyes, making them close again. “Don’t be so nervous. Just sleep.”
“Easy for you to say.”
“Hey, I’ll have you know I went through this before you did.”
As if that makes a difference. He couldn’t sleep either when it was his birthday a few months ago. Kyungsoo was in a guest room in Baekhyun’s apartment. Baekhyun woke him up because of how stressed he was. In the end, they had to sleep in the same bed for Baekhyun to calm down.
“If it’s so bad for you to have your dream, then just think of it like pulling off a bandaid. Get it over with. I promise it’ll be better than whatever you’re imagining.”
“Fine… I’ll try.”
“Good.” They’re so close, Kyungsoo can feel Baekhyun’s heartbeat against his back. Baekhyun puts an arm around him. He doesn’t push him away. “Good night, Kyungsoo.”
“Yeah.”
He wakes up in Baekhyun’s arms, sleepy and warm.
“Good morning,” Baekhyun murmurs. His voice is deeper and a bit rougher from sleep as he tightens his hold. “Dream of anything good?”
“I didn’t dream about anything,” Kyungsoo says.
“Not such a bad thing.”
“But… is that normal? Shouldn’t I dream something? Or do I not have a soulmate?”
Baekhyun rubs his eyes. Kyungsoo is sitting up now out of stress, only now realizing something is wrong. He’s not in his room anymore. The mess of the blankets they’d left on the floor is gone. The room he’s in is more spacious, with a big mirror on the other side next to the door, and a huge closet against the wall facing the foot of the bed. The floor is carpeted. The mattress is huge.
“Are you alright? What do you mean, you don’t have a soulmate?”
“Where are we right now?”
At that, Baekhyun sits up too, putting a palm on his forehead worriedly. “You don’t have a fever.”
“I’m not sick,” Kyungsoo snaps as he brushes his hand away. “Where are we? You… You’re…”
Baekhyun keeps staring at him, waiting for him to continue, but the truth is that he’s a little lost in his eyes and the fact that this Baekhyun is clearly not the Baekhyun he knows. He looks… older. Different. The same, but different. And there’s an amber kind of hue in his eyes and everything is starting to make sense, in the kind of way that makes zero sense to him.
“Baekhyun,” he says. “How old am I?”
“Um…” Baekhyun looks like he’s thinking it’s a trap question. “Twenty eight?”
Twenty eight. As in, older than twenty. As in, this is either a joke or he’s really in his dream. That means his soulmate is…?
“Hey, what is it? What’s wrong?” Then, pulling him in close, “Baby?”
“Shut up. I hate you.” For some reason he’s crying, but he’s burying his face into his chest and melting in his arms.
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
“I’m dreaming.”
A beat of silence passes. Baekhyun draws back in shock. “Your vision was of this? I’m holding twenty-one year old you? Holy f- I mean, oh my gosh. There, there, small child. It’s okay. We have some juice boxes downstairs if you- ow, what did I say wrong?”
“You’re so annoying,” Kyungsoo sobs. “Really, you didn’t tell me your soulmate was me this whole time?”
“I told you after you woke up. Well, I guess you didn’t get to that part yet. I’m sorry.”
“How long do these dreams last?”
“Just so you know, for me, this is reality. But it shouldn’t last long. Don’t you feel tired?”
He does, now that Baekhyun asked. He feels really tired. Like he can sleep right now. Still, he fights it off so he can say, “I’m beating you up when I get back.”
“Sure you are,” Baekhyun says, placatingly. He doesn’t look threatened one bit. “Twenty-one year old you is kind of cute. I forgot about how stubborn you are.”
He’s petting his hair. This is the oddest thing Kyungsoo has ever experienced, but being held like this by Baekhyun feels right.
“This can’t be real,” Kyungsoo mumbles.
“Why, because it’s too good to be true?”
“Is it really you?”
Softly, Baekhyun says, “It’s really me.”
“I’ll kill you.”
“Go to sleep.” Baekhyun laughs and rubs his back. “So you can yell at past me about it.”
“I’m serious,” Kyungsoo says tiredly. He frowns at how Baekhyun isn’t taking his death threat seriously, but sleep is beckoning. His eyelids are getting heavier. “I’ll really…”
He wakes up again, in Baekhyun’s arms, except this time it’s definitely his room. He turns over. Baekhyun is still sleeping, hair a mess and snoring a little. He has a bit of drool at the corner of his mouth. Kyungsoo wants to hit him.
“Baekhyun.”
“Mm… Kyungsoo?” For a moment, Baekhyun snuggles closer. Then he jolts. “You’re awake?”
“Yeah.”
“So?” Baekhyun asks. He yawns. “Who’s your soulmate?”
Instead of answering, Kyungsoo tackles him. Baekhyun makes a sound in surprise, but laughs when Kyungsoo settles on his chest in a hug. He has his face pressed against his neck. “You knew, you jerk.”
“Knew what?” Baekhyun teases.
“If you knew we were soulmates, you should have said something a long time ago.”
“Blame it on yourself. I had my dream of the future and you told me to keep it a secret.”
“I wouldn’t say that.”
“I didn’t get it either, but I guess this is just how it is. You didn’t want to change anything, maybe.”
Similar to how Minseok keeps Jongdae’s name in his phone the same as it is in the future. Kyungsoo doesn’t really think it would have made much of a difference. Maybe future him just wanted him to agonize over it for a few months.
“I really thought you had a different soulmate,” Kyungsoo says.
“I know. It was kind of amusing to me, honestly. Because you kept pretending like you don’t like me like that, but I know you do. Is that why you didn’t want to have your dream, by the way? Because you didn’t want it to be anyone other than me?”
Kyungsoo pulls back with a frown. “You’re getting really cocky all of a sudden.”
“I think I deserve to be cocky. Since I have the best soulmate in the world.”
He’s trying not to smile, but it’s too hard. “Okay, fine. Pass.”
“You’re lucky; I was going to just say I’m your gift, but I actually got you one.”
“You, as my gift?”
“Yeah. ‘Made for you,’ you know?”
“Oh my god.”
“I told you, I got you an actual gift. I can go get it-” Baekhyun’s smile is smug when Kyungsoo stops him. “Yes?”
“I should get more than one gift for my birthday. Especially since it’s my twenty-first.”
“I only bought you one.”
“You don’t need to buy it, but give me another one.”
“I don’t think I’m following-”
Baekhyun laughs when Kyungsoo smacks his chest. He puts his hands on his waist and smiles up at him.
“Well?”
“Come down here. I’m too tired to reach up.”
What kind of a gift is that, if he’s the one doing all the work? Still, Kyungsoo bends down and their lips meet in a lopsided, awkward kiss that doesn’t quite line up with the way that they’re both smiling too much. Baekhyun leans on his forearm to meet him halfway. He puts his other palm on Kyungsoo’s cheek.
“Now,” says Baekhyun breathlessly, “I should get your present.”
At that exact moment, Jongdae throws open the door. “Kyungsoo! Happy birthday- oh. Uh. Should I come back later?”
It takes a lot of convincing for Kyungsoo not to kill both of them, face beet red and utterly flustered by the turn of events. Baekhyun gets out of bed to avoid getting smacked by Kyungsoo, helping Jongdae cook a questionable breakfast. Later, they watch movies with Minseok and eat dinner. Kyungsoo dodges every single one of their attempts to get details about his dream and only tells them he met Baekhyun directly. After they eat, Jongdae gets the cake out of the refrigerator and insists on taking pictures of him and Baekhyun in front of it while they sing.
“Smile,” Jongdae says cheerily. Baekhyun puts an arm around him and kisses his cheek; Minseok catches that one on camera while Jongdae is trying to figure out the settings on his phone.
Finally, Kyungsoo opens presents. Jongdae got him some kitchen stuff he’s been saying he needs for the past year. Minseok didn’t actually get him sweets — instead, he got him a polaroid camera, which is a welcome surprise. He uses it immediately to take a picture of everyone together. Baekhyun’s present is the most predictable. It’s a candy box. Except it’s horribly home-made and contains the same candies that he gave him way back then, the ones that taste awful and are in the ugliest wrapping he’s ever seen. Kyungsoo laughs a little when he opens it. Jongdae and Minseok look confused, but Baekhyun is smiling when he says, “Really?”
“You know how hard it was to find those? I think they stopped selling them. That was, like, a blackmarket deal.”
Blackmarket, huh? It sure looks like it. They taste the same as Kyungsoo remembers, stale and a bit cough-drop-y. He doesn’t open the letter inside until later. He and Baekhyun are in his room. He’s sitting with his back to Baekhyun’s chest on the bed, the letter in hand.
“It’s a bit cheesy,” Baekhyun says. “I kind of don’t want to be here when you read it.”
“Shh. I’m sure it’s fine.”
“I’ll just read some manga on my phone while you do that.”
How cute. Although Kyungsoo wants to tease him, read it out, maybe, he doesn’t protest, only rests his arm on Baekhyun’s knee and opens the letter.
Hey Kyungsoo,
You’re old now, huh? Twenty-one. I feel so weird writing this. You don’t even know yet. I just got off a call with you, and we were talking about it again. You know. Who my soulmate is. Isn’t it so funny? You should know by the time I give you this letter. But really, I can’t believe you won’t even guess it’s you. Personally, I think we were made for each other from the beginning.
I’m giving you this candy because it’s one of my most precious memories of you. I think a small part of me knew when we first met, that you were the one. It’s kind of stupid. But you know how I hate sweets? Yeah, finding out that you had a sweet tooth when I don’t like candy was what sold me. But it only grew from there. I was really sad when I had to move, by the way. Not just because I was going to an unfamiliar place. I was sad because I had to leave you.
To be honest, I don’t know when I started feeling this way. Like, a bit crazy, a bit overthinking, a bit obsessed with you. I think it just grew the same way we did. All I know is that every time we hung up after calling each other, I felt happy. But I also missed you. A ton. And I wanted to tell you every single time, but no time seemed right, and also I didn’t know how you felt.
You know, you in the future is really pretty. You’re really pretty. You told me that you feel the same way, even now. Like, present now. And that I shouldn’t be afraid to tell you.
So… I love you. Kind of a lot. You’re my best friend, someone I want to spend my entire life with. I’m really, really glad that you’re my soulmate. I wouldn’t want it to be anyone else. After all, we were made for each other, right?
Happy birthday to my most precious person in the world.
Love,
Baekhyun
