Summary
LAN ZHAN sips his tea, then opens his cell and hits a speed dial number. It’s picked up on the first ring. “Hello, my love,” he says as a smile lifts the corner of his mouth. “It’s date night. Nine o’clock, you and I at Brawn’s. All right?”
“Brawn’s,” Wei Ying replies, his own smile warming his voice. “Nine o’clock. Want me to meet you?”
“I’ll pick you up. Be ready.” It’s been a dull day and Lan Zhan has plans for a Wei Ying appetizer. But then comes a rattle of background noise over the receiver and he hears Wei Ying say, “We’re closed.”
It is not yet closing time at the garage. Lan Zhan scowls, demanding. “Who’s there?”
There's no response.
“Wei Ying – who’s there?”
A low, dark voice commands from the connection, “Hang up.”
“Hold on, Xue Yang. Why so impatient?”
Fear grabs Lan Zhan’s heart.
