Work Text:

The video opened to Dick Grayson’s smiling face. He was clearly holding the camera as opposed to it being on a tripod. He was in a brightly lit kitchen.

“Greetings, guys, gals, and non-binary pals,” he said, throwing up a peace sign, “A lot of you have requested that we do a ghost hunt through Wayne Manor, and we thought it would be fun!”

Damian Wayne was standing beside him. “The manor is not haunted. I would know.”

“Don’t be a downer,” Duke Thomas’s voice called from off camera.

Tim Drake came into frame holding a cup of coffee. “You’d be shocked how much ghost hunting stuff Wayne Tech has made.”

“We did even need to google where to find a spirit box,” Duke said, finally appearing in frame, “Bruce just kinda had one in his desk.”

Damian’s face scrunched up. “Why would Father have a spirit box?”

Cassandra Cain glided into frame. “Ghosts are real, Dami.”

Cass looked at the corner of the room. As far as the camera could see, there wasn’t anything there. She nodded at the nothing and returned to face the camera.

“Oooookay,” Dick said to redirect attention, “Moving along…”

The Wayne siblings launched into a brief history of the manor, led by Dick, who knew a surprising amount about it.

They didn’t seem to notice the movement in the corner.

---

The siblings were gathered in the parlor. Cass behind the camera.

“If anyone is in here,” Dick proclaimed to the room, “Could you say something?”

The group sat in silence for a minute. Then two.

Damian was seated in a very expensive looking armchair. He looked about two seconds away from reupholstering it. “This is a truly riveting conversation.”

Duke sighed. “I’m actually with Damian on this one.” He held up a fist. “Younger brothers unite.”

Damian tapped his fist against Duke’s.

“Woah woah woah woah woah,” Tim said, “Am I on the older brothers team?”

Damian and Duke made eye contact with each other, then with Tim. “Yes,” they answered simultaneously.

“Dammit.”

Dick and Cass laughed.

The camera panned around the room one last time. It barely glimpsed a figure in the doorway of the room before continuing on. Whatever was there, the Wayne kids didn’t see it.

---

The group found it’s way to the library. Dick was on camera duty this time.

Cass held the spirit box as Tim spoke into it. “My name is Tim,” he said, “If there’s anyone in this room with us, can you say my name back to me?” After some not-quite-silence-because-the-box-sucks, Tim continued, “This is Cass, can you say her name back to us?”

More silence.

“Can you say ‘apple tater,’” Duke asked, “Or possibly ‘spaghetti,’ either works.”

Cass’s shoulders started moving with silent laughter. “Not a fan of the boys,” she said, turning off the box.

“Apparently not,” Tim agreed.

In the corner of the frame, behind a bookshelf, something moved through the shadows. The camera didn’t get the chance to focus on it before it was turned to something else.

---

The last stop in their investigation was Bruce Wayne’s office. The camera was on a tripod this time, as opposed to in someone’s hand.

Dick was holding the spirit box this time. “Hi, my name’s Dick,” he said at the empty air, “These are my siblings Cass, Tim, Duke, and Damian. We’re trying to make contact with out grandfather Thomas. If you’re here, please repeat one of our names back to us.”

“I know that we’re quite the collection of characters,” Tim said, “But I promise, we’ve all been adopted by you son.”

For the first time that night, the box said something almost coherent. “…ja..son…”

Cass furrowed her brow. “Jason?”

“Are we talking to Jason,” Dick asked.

“Or someone who knows him,” Damian suggested.

Silence.

Dick’s shoulders sagged. He reached to turn the camera off.

---

They were back in the kitchen. The camera was once again on a tripod as the Wayne kids sat at the kitchen counter.

There was another person there this time.

He was standing a few feet behind them. He has dark hair and blue-green eyes. He was much taller than the rest of the group. He almost looked like…

No. That would be impossible.

The group in front didn’t acknowledge him.

“Thanks so much for this suggestion,” Dick said, “We really had a blast doing this.”

“Leave more suggestions in the comments,” Tim said. He pointed downward as if at the comment box.

“We will be picky with what we respond to,” Damian added, “So be clever.”

Duke shook his head. He mouthed the words “no we won’t,” contradicting Damian’s statement.

“Catch you later,” Cass said, holding up a peace sign.

As the video cut off, the man in the back tried to speak. “See me.” No sound came out.

---

“How do you think people will react to this,” Jason asked, finally taking a seat at the counter with the rest of the siblings.

“I’m not entirely sure,” Tim answered as he cleared his camera equipment, “But I’m excited to check out twitter tomorrow morning.”

The others made noises of agreement.
