Work Text:

“Ok, wait, you’re kidding right? You’re kidding.”

It was about midday according to the little beep of Scar’s watch. He was in the kitchen with Impulse. Originally he came to grab a snack but got sidetracked over what Impulse was holding.

“You’ve seriously never seen one of these? Like- at all? This stuff is super popular!” Impulse shifted his hold on… whatever that was. It was a dead looking purple and moved like a water balloon filled with syrup.

Scar curled his lip up, “No, not at all! What even is that? It looks like an organ.”

     “It’s a fruit.”

“LIAR. That’s- that’s fake. You’re FAKING me and you are TRICKING me, Impulse I cannot BELIEVE you would do something like this to ME you’re friend, oh I feel sO betrayed and lied t-“

“Will you just let me cook the damn thing??? I already told you it’s no good without being cooked! Just wait, you’ll love this.”

Scar rolled his eyes and pushed himself onto one of the counters. With a little tip of his hat, he smirked at Impulse, “Fine, fine. But if it’s gross you owe me a dollar.”

      “But-“

“No butts no nuts no coconuts! Now get cooking!”

Impulse grumbled something about not knowing what a coconut is and threw the ‘fruit’ directly onto the stove’s flame. Scar watched in morbid curiosity as it hissed on impact, making wet popping sounds. There was a focused silence in the kitchen while the two waited for it to be done.

A few minutes into the process, Scar spoke up again, “Uh, Impy, I think you’re burning it.”

     “That’s the plan.”

Scar just groaned and slapped his forehead in response. What is with this thing? Stupid burnt… organ fruit.

After Impulse had successfully scorched the fruit to high hell, he took it off the flame with a pair of tongs. Thankfully, Scar thought he was going to grab it bare handed for a second.

The fruit’s charred skin flaked off slightly as Impulse split it in two and dumped each half into a bowl. He grabbed two spoons and handed Scar his bowl.

      “Oh, well… huh.”

“Well?” Impulse dug his spoon into the fruit and stuck it into his mouth, “What’d’ya think?”

Scar peered into his bowl cautiously, almost expecting something to leap out and bite his face off, “It looks… er… slightly more appetizing.”

The fruit had turned from a seemingly liquid-y inside to something more solid. Little black seeds were scattered about the center, like tiny apple seeds. He hummed at the familiar shape and dug a spoon into the fruit’s cream colored flesh. It felt like a weird cross between pudding and who-knows-how-old hoodsie cups you’d find at the bottom of the freezer.

Scar was decidedly skeptical. He looked up to Impulse for any form of reassurance, but he seemed to be too distracted by the treat in front of him. Scar sighed, resigned, and stuck the spoon full of the fruit into his mouth.

At first, he didn’t taste much. He was mainly puzzled over it’s weird texture. That’s when it hit him. He’d never tasted anything like this before. And it was good. Scar could only describe the flavor as somewhere between a rich vanilla icecream and a maple-sweeted coffee. He let out a content groan from how good it was and kept eating. Eagerly.

When he finally surfaced from his bowl, Impulse was looking at him with a shit eating grin.

      “So?”

      “Shuddup, fish breath.”

“Ok but since I was right, do I get the dollar?”

      “…. no.”

      “Oh cmon! Nothing??”

“… If you promise to make this again I’ll give you a dollar.”

      “Deal.”

Scar finished his treat, trying to ignore Impulse’s laughter. Sure, sure, he was right! Whatever, didn’t mean anything. But Scar was pretty happy about this discovery. With a happy little him he finished eating, now one odd space fruit smarter.
