Summary:

It is late August, 1982, and 17 year old Cecil Terwilliger is starting his final year of secondary school at Greenview Academy, a college-preparatory school located near Capital City. During his time there, he gets to know his room mate, a goth girl named Perdita Olson. Will school be a living hell for preppy Cecil, or will he come to enjoy things there?

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Cecil never asked to be enrolled in Greenview Academy. In fact, it was entirely his parents' decision. They had wanted him to attend the school because it was an elite, college-preparatory boarding school. Despite the wealth of his family, Cecil's parents had to save up a large sum of money to pay the academy's fees. Yet Cecil still did not feel comfortable attending Greenview; something about it rubbed him off the wrong way. And besides, he had no choice in what school he attended.

Cecil had spent his entire life up to this point attending expensive boarding schools filled with upper middle class, "preppy" children such as himself. The same had applied to his older brother, Robert Terwilliger. The Terwilliger family had always been sophisticated and rich; Cecil's father, the senior Robert Terwilliger, was a renowned doctor. Dr. Terwilliger himself had been born into a fairly wealthy bloodline, and so could afford the higher education he had received even if he did poorly in school. Cecil's mother, on the other hand, was Dame Judith Underdunk. She was a highly respected Shakespearean actress who had moved to the United States after meeting Dr. Terwilliger. A theatre veteran, Dame Judith had a major impact on her sons, possibly sparking their own love of Shakespeare and theatre in general.

Cecil was a little different from the rest of his immediate family, however. While he was still obviously just as pretentious and snobby as they were, Cecil had slightly more lowbrow interests. For one, he had enjoyed watching Krusty the Clown's television show since he was five years old, a source of ridicule from his older brother -and to a lesser extent, his parents. He dreamed of being on Krusty's show, one day. Cecil would do anything to achieve that dream. But Bob still mocked him for it, much to Cecil's annoyance. Bob had also gotten all of the attention from their parents, and Cecil grew envious of him. It didn't help that Robert Sr. and Judith were constantly comparing Cecil to Bob, either. Cecil longed to step out of his elder brother's shadow, but as the way things seemed now, it looked to be a difficult thing to do.

Back to Greenview... Cecil had been dropped off at the academy by bus. All he had on him were the clothes on his back and a suitcase in hand. Even then, his clothes were replaced by the standard school uniform; a formal, dark grey, long-sleeved shirt, black dress pants, and black dress shoes. Cecil was not the biggest fan of the uniforms, but he could live with it. After all, they weren't the tackiest things in the world. He'd definitely seen tackier. Anyway, Cecil made his way into the school dorms. As he entered his room, he realized that he would have to share it with someone else. And that's when he met her; Perdita Olson. He couldn't tell initially due to the school's strict dress code, but Cecil soon came to understand that Perdita was, in fact, a broody goth girl. In other words, she seemed to be the opposite of him in many ways.

It was going to be a long final school year for Cecil.
