Chapter Text

Izuku was only four years old when his dreams were crushed and his father left his family breaking his mother’s heart. He tried his best to hide his pain from his mother, but some days that was easier said than done. Especially on the days where his friend Kacchan hurt him. His mother always bandaged him up before telling him to be brave and that people will only hurt him if he cries. He tried his hardest to not cry when he was hurt, but he couldn’t help that his pain made him cry.

He never let his mother know that he knew that his father had left because of him. He was supposed to be sleeping that night, but he had a nightmare so he went looking for his parents to chase away the nightmare. He snuck to their door to hear them having another fight and he knew he should have just gone back to his room, but his curiosity got the better of him.

“Inko, I can’t do this anymore! I’m the laughing stock of my office because he didn’t get a quirk!”

“That’s not his fault Hizashi! He’s just a child. Our child.”

“He is no child of mine. He’s just a quirkless freak that we’d be better off without. He’s asleep right now and he’d have no idea until tomorrow. We could be long gone before he even knew what was going on!”

“I already told you that I’m not leaving him all alone! He’s perfectly fine the way he is! He is not some freak and if you really think that, then you should leave. I’m not having this argument anymore.”

Upon hearing his father’s footsteps, he races back to his bedroom diving under the covers just in case they come to check up on him. However, he hears his father swear before the front door slams shut and his mother starts softly crying. He feels the tears gather in his eyes knowing that his father won’t be coming back because he doesn’t want him as his son anymore. The tears silently start falling as he feels like his heart has been torn to shreds over the loss of his father. Sometime later, he sleepily hears his other come into his room probably to check on him before she speaks.

“I’m so sorry Izuku. It’s all our fault that you can’t live your dreams and now you won’t have a father around to protect you. I’m so sorry.”

He doesn’t move until after she’s left the room and he only shifts to clench his hand against where his heart is knowing that is also the moment, he realises that Kacchan isn’t his friend anymore. That he hasn’t been his friend ever since he was diagnosed as quirkless. He cries over the loss of his life as it was not knowing this is the first time that he would feel like this.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He’s only five years old when he hears a lot of adults talking about a villain fight a couple of streets over and how Endeavor is the hero on the scene. He frowns not really caring for the flame hero before he starts walking to the apartment he shares with his mother. He notices how there are a lot of ambulances near his apartment building, but doesn’t worry about it because they could be waiting to get near the villain fight for any injuries involved.

His body freezes seeing his apartment building completely engulfed in flames as many police officers help people away from the building. His eyes frantically search through the crowd, hand clenching against his chest the longer it is taking for him to find his mom in the crowd. That’s when he sees Aunt Mitsuki try to push past the line of police officers shouting as Uncle Masaru and Katsuki stand there horrified. Finally, he can hear what she’s saying but he hopes that she’s just playing a cruel joke on everyone here.

“Please, my best friend is still in there! She was close to where the fire ball landed! I can’t find her out here and I think she’s still inside!”

“Ma’am, we’re going to have to ask you to stand back for the time being. The flames are too hot for anyone to go in there until the fire is brought down. I’m sure your friend is okay.”

Before he consciously makes the decision, he’s running past his Uncle Masaru who reaches out for him recognizing the green blur as Aunt Mitsuki reaches for him as well. The police men shout in surprise when he slides past their legs without any hinderance to run towards the burning building. However, he doesn’t make it far as someone picks him up around the middle preventing him from going any further.

“Stop! Let me go! My mom is in there! Please she needs help!” He screams at the top of his lungs trying to get the police officer to let him go.

He sees Aunt Mitsuki put a hand to her mouth tears silently streaming down her face as she stares at the building causing him to look that way. Tears silently stream down his face as he watches his apartment building fall apart holding his mother still inside of it. He beats on the policeman holding him before they pass him off to a set of paramedics who try to get him to calm down. However, he’s inconsolable causing them to give sad looks when he notices a man in a trench coat coming their way.

“I’ve got it from here guys. Go ahead and see if you can help with some of the injured.” He softly but firmly says causing them to nod before heading off.

“Hello, my name is Naomasa Tsukauchi and I’m a detective. Could you tell me your name?”

“Izuku. Izuku Midoriya,” he sniffles out causing the detective to give him a sympathetic smile.

“Well, Izuku, until we can confirm that your mother was in the building you will come with me for a bit. After that, well it depends on a lot of things.”

Izuku tiredly nods feeling safe with the detective he’s only just met. The detective reaches forward before picking him up to carry him to the car that he’s driving back to the police station. When Izuku falls asleep in the back seat, the detective gives a sad smile already knowing that the child’s mother had passed in the fire. Unfortunately, that means he has to bring the young boy to the nearby orphanage since there is no nearby family after running a quick search on the kid’s background. He hates to leave the kid all of a sudden, but his hands are tied since the higher ups want to keep the kid out of the news to help Endeavor save some face.
